Indeed.... Cck were scratching there heads on it, they havent fixed it/ don't know whats wrong but car seems to have sorted itself! They had it back on the rollers and said all is fine however collected it fri and now the no spark/ no fuel issue Occurs in random places and hard eccleration... at 5k for a couple seconds then pulls past- very frustrating!

That's frustrating. I'm not saying it is dirt in carb's but it sure sounds like it. Might be worth checking the fuel filter and see if there's any sign of dirt coming from the tank.

It sounds like the spark plugs to me. The same thing happened on a Stag to me ; a bad batch of plugs caused an random misfire above the same range as yours, with it backfiring through the exhaust.
Since only buying spark plugs through reputable sources and not eBay I've not had the problem appear since.
It's good to see the car getting some use!

Nice car - can I ask what you’ve done / are planning to do to preserve its bodywork? I can hear the surface rust patches on those arches fizzing away from over here! Any plans to repaint it?

Will give plugs a go again- worth a try, only buy from CPA etc never eBay!
I rubbed back, rust treated then lacquered the rust to arches and bottom of doors- should help it a bit. The car lives in a dry garage. I like the paint knackered as it is, its how I remember the old carn looking when I was a kid

Sooo... Not a massive update as brought another car I have been mucking around with over the last month (too modern for here- a Golf 2.8 4Motion- its going up for sale soon as not my cup of tea now I have driven it a bit) No luck on the miss-fire/ hesitation as yet... doing my brain in! Added a "Skytag" to the car, IMO much better than the tracker system I have on others as it texts alerts when the car is moved from a set location, texts if the battery is running low and is tested once a month- all for £20 per months, As opposed to a Tracker that does not test unless you call them, provides no alerts and cost a lot more. Once when I called Tracker for a test they advised me the battery is flat and has been for some time- very handy!!! Did a bit more budget interior carpeting (temp until the car gets a proper cage) and in doing so found that the install for the throttle cables was awful- Ihave new cables due, at which point I will fix a bracket on the engine side of the bulk head to take the cables, to prevent the right angle/ fraying!! If anyone else has done this and has some simple ideas, please let me know/ advise.

Throttle cable all re-routed to original linkage to pedal, much easier and smoother. GCS in Monks Gate had the car as CCK could not get to the bottom of the issue, changed jets etc and advised that the hesitation/ holding back was due to the filters being fitted too close to the end of the trumpets, filters removed/ pulled to end of trumpet and the cars runs like a rocket!! Over the moon with the performance now!! Simple things!! So now to book it in for a proper exhaust from the stainless steel manifold back!

Enjoyed reading through this, I really love a 2002. Although it’s got the running issues, did they get a chance to get it set up on the rollers before it started to play up?

Thanks Yes as filters removed for rolling road at CCK hence the confusion that it ran so bad on the road! New issue now is heat from manifold cooking coil HT leads and brake servo!!! Have the e21/ larger heat shield but having a larger on made sat

Sooo Master Cylinder seals re-done as heat from manifold seems to have melted them/ made the fluid black and lost pressure!! Heat shield made and installed to protect the servo etc, and fitted some ducting to get air in! Then Powerflow exhaust made, went for twin inward rolled just off centre, rear box, rest straight through. Sounds and looks great- however after about 50 miles, horrible noise, my s/steel manifold has now cracked at the weld to the plate- so its all got to come off again. Spoke to supplier of manifold and they advised they now ensure flexi is fitted after the gearbox hanger to allow for the M10's movement- so sounds like a common issue! Another day another issue- ha ha

Don't forget to check the steering box for adjustment. Well worth doing. Did it sat, simple half turn has made a real difference- thanks for the heads up. Also added additional heat shield and bled the brakes again- seems better/ no fade. Squirted a bit of hammeright on the front and rear valance, when the works unit is clear going to get the car in and do a proper clean up/ under seal.

Exhaust was sorted with flexi section, but manifold split at weld again, so all removed and welded again- seems ok now but a lot of hassle. Heat from manifold seemed to do the old master no good, so I bit the bullet and purchased new master (re-con) and reservoir from Jaymic, and re-con servo's from Linwar as the originals were not in the best shape. All fitted along with new lines throughout the engine bay, routed away from the heat with the reservoir repositioned the other side of the bulk head. Also a new heat shield over the manifold. All seems much better, but manifold really kicks out the heat!! Got the car in the workshop now and plan to underseal and tidy up a bit, considering removing over riders and rubber lines from the bumpers as I prefer the earlier smaller bumper look.

Today I have realised that under heavy acceleration the manifold hits the steering box!! The car has new engine mounts so should not be too much play in these, any advice?

Without sounding daft are any of the bolts loose? Engine side or subframe, I mean. The one on the passenger side is a pinch arrangement, so can let engine rotate to driver's side, or the driver's side mount can slide slightly. If neither of those then ask over at 02forum.co.uk in the tech help area as one of the guys will be able to help, for sure. www.02forum.co.uk/viewforum.php?f=9
