Yeah, it was a mobile RWC guy so it can't have been THAT in depth, what with it being on the side of the road. I have a feeling it was possibly a friend of the brother's, who was a mechanic. The dizzy cap seems pretty well secured, I was hoping to pull it there instead of the plug in case I had a repeat performance of the lead pulling out of the boot. Although, it would achieve the same result, I guess.

Ah a phoneworthy Yep won't make a difference which end of the lead you pull off. Is that an engine that needs leaded additive or is it ok on unleaded?

According to the internet is is safe to just run Unleaded. I am running 95 in it as the manual recommends 94. The PO wasn't adding any additive so if it does need it, it'll be pretty shot by now anyway!

Hah. Nooooo. I don't have the time or money for that sort of thing right now. I have a rebuild kit on it's way so will see if a good clean and tune will free up some ponies.
I'm more concerned about that rust at the rear at the moment. I'd rather get that sorted first, before I unwittingly decide to go bumperless.

I say that, but instead I did this in the dwindling moonlight after work today. It gets dark so early now! Keyed the spare wheel down, threw some primer on it. Will give it some paint tomorrow. Shall give me an idea of whether or not it is the colour I want. I have the next two weekends off, so I intend to be at a car show each weekend! Hooray! I would like to have the wheels done for the first one if possible. It'll probably be a pretty average job, haha. If I like it, and it doesn't stick well, I'll pull the tyres off and blast them. Exciting update, I know! Not even new wheels. Matt

Well, I have the spare wheel painted. I was going to chuck it on the front and see how it looked, and had it in the boot to inflate at the servo on my way home from working on the Minor, and the servo inflator was busted! Should have just done it at the shed instead. Anyway, I took Seedy down to the shed to get a second ear on my lumpy idling. Jeff kindly spared a few minutes to take a look, and we quickly diagnosed this as the main culprit. That's not going to be much good then. So new cap and rotor. At least I ordered them already. Speaking of, I rang up to find out where they were as they hadn't shown up yet, and apparently the supplier didn't get the bit of the order that said cap and rotor. I find that hard to believe if they got the rest of it! So hopefully that will show up soon, as I want to take her to a car meet on Saturday. I will swap the leads while I'm doing it all, so everything is fresh. Couldn't get the car to roll over in short enough kicks to get the points to open, so ended up having to lever it round with a screw driver. Bit gungy in there, but points look okay. I am a bit annoyed, though. Over the weekend we have had a lot of wind, and I failed to notice the metal drip tray that was leaning against the wall, was now leaning against Seedy. When I started to drive off I heard a bit of a scrape and then a clang as the tray hit the ground. Should buff out, and it's not like there's not a multitude of small scratches all over her anyway, but still annoying! That's all for now. I shall swing past a different servo to reinflate the spare on my way to work tomorrow and try it on. Not going to have any light to take photos though until Thursday. -_- Matt

Found a servo with a working inflator this morning. Gauge didn't work. -_- So I over inflated it a bit for now, will pick up a gauge from work today, and it won't be going anywhere until I get a new distributor cap for her. Looks pretty good. I did a terrible job keying it down, but the idea was right. Will start on the other ones. No photos as she's tight up against the wall and the suns at the wrong angle so it's going to be too hard to pick up on my phone. Need new dress rings now and to freshen up the centre caps. Hopefully I can get two done at least by the weekend so one side can look prettier, haha. Was just thinking I could chock her up on bricks and do all four at once on Thursday morning, but I've booked her in with Jeff to get the transmission serviced properly so I know where I stand with it.

Well, I started to key down the next wheel this morning, but swiftly gave up on the idea. The paint and primer that was on it already is all chipped off and the height difference is too much to get past without some spray filler. So.. I'm going to take the rubber off and run them through the sand blaster. Which I would do tomorrow morning, but I can't because Seedy is in for a transmission service with Jeff, so she needs to be on her feet still. With the sand blaster less than 20m away. So no fancy wheels for the car meet this weekend. I will get on to it in the afternoon after the meet I think, to make sure I have it done by the time I head to the one the weekend after. I still have the Ashtray to putt around in so I can just throw her up on bricks for now. I will redo the spare as well, as it's not the best finish. But I will have a photo of how it looks at least tomorrow, I promise! Still no distributor cap and rotor. Cheers, Matt

Grrrr. I dislike Bosch and their inability to perform like a business. Apparently the order they received was just for leads, not leads, caps, rotors, contacts, condensors and a coil. So we reconfirmed it and they said yes all good. Then nothing for two days. Ring them up again today. 'Yes, we sent that out already. Here is the con note.' Except that's the original order of just leads. So had to send ANOTHER order for the rest of the parts, and made sure they expressed it up from Melbourne. Unfortunately this means that I don't have a cap and rotor so I can't get Seedy down for her transmission service tomorrow morning. So that has been rescheduled for next week now. As long as it happens before I drive up the coast, I'm okay with that. But I don't really have time to do wheels, still. I might try and split the now-spare and take it down and blast it in the morning, maybe I can get it painted up by Saturday so half the car matches at least. Otherwise, I can rock a singular gold wheel, and instead give her a polish as I won't have time before Saturday. Decisions. I think I'd rather do the wheels, tbh. In other news, my carb rebuild kit has arrived. Thus: Halp! Not an immediate concern as it's not BAD, I can just smell it occasionally. But I would like to do it nonetheless. Maybe after I go up the coast in case I break things, haha. I also ordered some new trim rings to replace my rather curbed ones, so they might show up at some point, too! Cheers, Matt

Well that's not a very constructive comment, is it. *edit* took me a bit to realise I have nothing to complain about compared to the Philippines. But I didn't choose to live there, did I? Not that I think you should move. It keeps the rest of us entertained. Just finished a glass of mead. I think fermentation has stopped properly now. It's changed taste now again like people describe if its just started ageing properly. As my mate said, just drink it faster! I think with some proper ageing it'll come good again, but drinking it faster seems like the simpler solution.

Not that I think you should move. It keeps the rest of us entertained. Ah, but it could have been so much worse. I could have said that in all the time I've been ordering parts for the '38 and getting them shipped halfway around the world, that apart from once, everything has arrived on time, as described and then gone on to question why you lived in Australia rather than Manila. But then you'd have called me a smug bstard. So I said nowt! As my mate said, just drink it faster! Your mate speaks the truth.

It's just extra frustrating because I know EXACTLY where it went wrong. I got the parts. Thursday morning just as I pulled up at the workshop with a boot full of wheels, I got a message saying they had arrived at work. So I looked at Jeff and shrugged. I managed to split two wheels, sand blast them, get them primed by 2pm when I started work, and then painted and cleared them in the evening afterwards. Tonight I took them down to the shed again and Jono gave me a hand putting the tyres back on and rebalancing them. I now have 2 weights on each wheel instead of 4 and 7. They looked pretty good. And then the got marked with the rubber hammer putting the tyres back on. Clearly we need a tyre machine! When I got them home again I have them a quick scrub and then a little bit of paint. I'm not going to put too much more effort in to them, I want to change wheels anyway, haha. Threw them on, changed the wiper blades. Job jobbed. Would have been nice to take her for a test drive tonight to make sure the cap solved my problems. But it's raining heavily. To the point where they're giving us flood warnings for tomorrow. So after all that rushing around, might not make it to the car meet anyway. We will see. Jono was going to bring the Cougar, but if it's drizzling he needs to wear gumboots. So if we go, it'll be three of us in Seedy and we can see if she leaks. If it's not pouring down, I'll be there. So pics then. Looks good, though. Well, on one side, haha.

Well, I got my new cap and rotor installed, managed to break another two leads in the process so was running on 3 so a net loss of 2 with that repair. Nice! Sorted new leads for her last night and she's sounding healthier again. Can't drive her anywhere as the other three wheels are in the process of being painted. Sand blasting is heaaaaps easier providing I can get tyres off. Hopefully I can get the tyres on and painted tonight and then a quick balance as she's meant to be in for the trans service tomorrow And I want time for the paint to get a little harder before I coat them in wheel protectant stuff to stop the brake dust sticking. So of that eventuates, she will be out in the sun finally. Need to do the thermostat housing as its leaking a little, too.

Actually its very slow progress. Almost a week just to blast and paint some wheels. Photos have been promised a few times but not delivered, so I will make extra effort tomorrow.

Well, I got sick of walking past Seedy with her looking all forlorn like this. So I sorted out the rest of the wheels. But first I pulled the thermostat housing off and coated the block face with some gasket goop as it wasn't flat enough to prevent the coolant weeping out. So while that gasket goop was setting, I swapped the air filter, as it was a bit past its best. I also looked at doing the fuel filter but the one on the car is not the one listed for it, so the mounting bracketry is all wrong. I will get a new one tomorrow at work as the one it is, we have in stock. Easier than trying to rearrange the brackets. Wheels on, new trim rings on, it was time to take Seedy down for her date with Jeff to get the transmission sorted. But first, I stopped off somewhere secluded to take a few pics. Much nicer looking. Not super dark gold, barely noticeable if it's not in direct sunlight. Comparison: Then I went and got the auto serviced. Shifts a lot smoother now, and actually goes in to third properly. Then we had a look at why she is surging at idle when in gear, and noticed that there was gas coming out of the fuel pump! This was a bit beyond me, so I started diagnosing with Jono via messages. The smoke comes out of the little vent below the bolt on the left. I wasn't aware fuel pumps had a vent, but apparently they do for vapour or something. The PCV was removed to see if that was blocked, but despite looking like this: It cleaned up okay and a suck/blow test shows that it still works as intended. When running with it out of the rocker cover, it sucks fine, but I noticed a lot of smoke coming from the grommet hole. The vapour coming out of the pump tastes only slightly of fuel, and doesn't happen at all when the PCV isn't jammed in to the cover, so that seems to be the cause of that. Not really sure what the cause of the visible venting is? I thought the vapour from the PCV gets pushed back through the pump and burnt under compression again? I will get a new PCV as it's only $20 and removes it from the equation, but it seems to be okay still. So is the pump leaking slightly? o.O Doesn't seem to be much if any fuel around the pump. Jono seems to think it's okay for now so unless someone jumps out and says 'STOP! This is a bad thing!' I will drive her two hours up the highway tomorrow night so I can go to this car show. She's idling like curse word when in gear and not so great out of gear, but I need to adjust the screws. But I'm not really sure what I'm doing there. I understand that there is a speed screw and mixture screw, but I don't understand how I decide which one to fiddle with? So any instruction there would be great. It would be nice to get her to idle properly before I drive so far. She's fine under load, just misses at idle. Cheers, Matt
