I'm out and about drinking but I picked this up this evening.
More later.
Apparently my phone won't drop and upload. So... Pics later. My bad.
Okay, so time to fix this.
Today I bought a '78 Cressida that I put a deposit on yesterday. Here are some of the pics the seller sent me.
(first is actually one my mate took yesterday when we went to view it)
The red in his photo's is a bit misleading, it's a more maroony red. Will see what a decent cut will do to it as it's a bit meh in places as you can see in the first pic.
And here's a first fill shot. I've been looking forward to doing one of these.
Looks great in the dark, mind.
The adventure home (about 20min) was... interesting. I think I'm going to call her Seedy. She certainly felt a bit lethargic to begin with. Took a loooong time to get warm enough to not stall on me, so need to check the plugs and run some carb cleaner through, etc. Stalled 6 times trying to get 5min around the corner to a fuel station, haha.
Ended up having to sit on a shoulder for 5min giving her some gentle revs to get her to warm up enough to continue. Which was fun because the needle was on empty the whole time. What was that you were saying about no one selling a car with enough fuel to get to the next station, pistonpopper ?
Anyway, my mate followed me home slowly, which must have been painful in his AMG, but it needed a run after having some maintenance done.
Got there in the end. Threw some stuff in the house, went and grabbed dinner and then drove over to a mates house to have a few drinks, show the car off etc.
Drove people around a bit, determined that it cuts out if you throttle too hard, or come off high revs quickly (pulling off the highway, for example).
This sounds like the carb needs a little diddling? I don't know much about carbs yet, and Jono is away for two weeks, but I plan on driving Seedy everywhere in the mean time.
Will check the plugs and throw some cleaner down it's throat when I get a chance, but will have to wait til monday or so, which is when I have enough spare time to do anything. That will also be when I transfer ownership.
Other things that I have noticed so far:
Oil light comes on if idling at lights, etc. Goes away as soon as you give it a little foot.
I was a little confused as it kind of looks like there is an agricultural injection setup there, but it has a carb, then I followed the pipes back and they go in to the pump that's on the pulley at the top of the belt loop you can see in the engine bay photo above.
This looks like an oil pump to me, in which case the pipes running to the head are for the oil galleries? So oil light solved by revs would imply the belt may be slipping? Or pump dying slowly. It's usually fine but occasionally lights up.
That's thing noticed number one.
Number two is that the alternator light comes on intermittently, also generally solved by some rev's. So that's pointing towards maybe a belt as well. But will throw a multimeter on it anyway and see what's going on there. For now, I can just charge the battery if I have issues.
Number three is... not noticed at this point. So that's pretty good so far.
No wait, I remembered what three was! She takes aaages to warm up. I need to investigate here and see what I can do to speed up the process as I don't have the patience to sit around for 20min waiting, haha. So any ideas here would be appreciated. (No choke that I can spot, but I was driving in the dark, so who knows!)
There are some small rust issues that will need to be sorted, but nothing on the scale of the Minor, haha.
I will photograph Seedy in greater detail when I have time, probably on Monday, as it's getting dark pretty early these days.
That's all for now.
I am a happy boy.
Cheers,
Matt
