....Is stoking the fire of desire inside me. So, tomorrow I'm going to look at a 1975 Mazda 929 coupe for sale near Strasbourg!! Apparently its a one-owner job in good nick with 70k on the clock but a hole in one of the whelarches. I'm not even sure what one is but I think it looks a bit like this: The guy asked for 800 euros on the phone but ha says a few people have told him its 'trop cher' and so he is open to offers. I certainly havent got 800 euros to spend, but the fire is burning so i'll try to have a good old barter...! I've already bought the bloody thing in my imagination. Yeeeooooowwwww!!!!!

Cool! I'm pretty sure the '79 will be that shape. I had an earlier RX4 coupe for a while until it dawned on me that I knew nothing about Rotaries so I sold it But it's pillarless..nothing else matters!

Green with envy right now!!! Such a cool car. At my scrappy today there were a couple of old J-cars: a Toyota Corolla (I think...) fastback coupe - T plater, engine missing, a pillars cut, and another '70s Toyota. SHame they were there, but both had their engines out so hopefully they've gone to a good home!

Thats an awesome looking car, you have to buy it. You know you want to . While we're on the subject of J cars, I saw this in a mitsubishi canter the other day and it cracked me up I guess it must get lost in the translation ;D ;D ;D

Mr_Bo11ox; Be sure to take lots of pictures even if you don't get it! (but you know you will - unless it's rotten) if you don't mind me asking, how much will it be setting you back if you were to get it? Something like that would still go for a decent price over here, I imagine a bit more in Europe.
Bullitt; That is a nice 4. I have to say, I find the 4's the nicest of all the RX series, 3's are alright but nothing fantastic, the 4's have that extra edge to them I reckon, the nosecone is fantastically styled.

Waaaah!!!!! I think this could be one of those 'once in a lifetime' buys. It is a TOTALLY original, never welded or painted, one-owner, service history job. The underside is bright white (no underseal!) and the interior is perfect, save for a missing interior light. Owned by a guy local to strasbourg all its life, garaged when he died in 1997, and now brought back to life by the guy I bought it off. It has a small scrape on one rear wheelarch, but NO rust! NO bog! NO dodgy paint! for more (rather curse word poor) pics go here: usera.imagecave.com/Mr_Bo11ox/Mazda929/Of course I could not help buying it, I paid 600 euros (about 410 quid). The problem is, it is so mint, it's far too nice for me, I would end up trashing it cos I am too careless. It needs someone really anal (!) to love and cherish it and regularly douse it in lashings of lovely Waxoyl. I am going to put it in the garage and polish it for the moment, then I might put it on UK ebay, see if anyone can give it a good home. It must be just about unique in Europe, i don't think I have seen any 70's J-car as completely unsullied as this one. It drives perfectly, smooth and quiet, but its pretty uninspiring to drive. recirculating ball stereing too, no rack, so its no Lotus Elise. But just check these out!! Woo-hoo!!!!

I couldn't NOT buy it!!! Aye Caramba!
But to be honest I can't be bothered with loads of polishing and checking and worrying about rustworms noshing my irreplaceable wings! I just wanna tip some juice in, leap in and go for a razz! Or, I want to be pulling engines out and replacing them with far less suitable ones!
I was looking at it and imagining it with one of those gorgeous jewel-like Mazda 1.8/2.0 24V V6 engines plus RX7 or MX5 5-speed box, but its too good to be hacked about by a clueless donk like me.
So I will admire its chintz factor and drive round a bit showing off, but i'll soon get bored I reckon.
My girlfriend went fruit loop when i told her what I'd bought, but I'm sure she'll see the light when we 'go pillarless'...!

RWD?

It is RWD, 1800cc sohc with iron block and alloy head. it has a single twin-choke carb and is reputed to make 100bhp. Leaf springs + live axle at the back, 4-speed box, recirculating ball steering, dunno what type of front suspension. Mechanically, there are absolutely no technologically interesting features whatsoever.
I think it could be considered like a J morris marina or ford cortina (except minus the steering precision).
Fortunately it has lots of spangly bits to keep onlookers and passengers amused while the grimacing driver wills the journey to be over.

That's a cracking find. It's probably better in terms of sell-ability that's it a 929 not an RX4 as the Rota puts a lot of people off. Mechanically they are pretty mundane but very well built as are all Mazda abd very durable. Steering box is no big deal providing it's well adjusted and does not flex. A lot of the loose feeling you get with some steering boxes is actually the box flexing on the chassis leg rather than the box itselt. My 510 has a brace between the top of the box and the inner wing to stop that and it made a huge difference.
Not sure if it'd fetch much money in the UK because of it being LHD though. There's plenty of people who be interested on the continent though I bet.

I can see that the passenger side drop arm is a bit sloppy, when it should be turning on its pivot its rather 'squidging' the bush or bearing or whatever it is. Do you know any possible parts suppliers? I've looked in the internet rather half heartedly and found a big fat NOWT.
Also, who knows if an RX-7 five speed box would fit it?

I doubt wether you'd find much in the way of parts suppliers in the UK but there must be parts places for them in Oz. Also, when I was at the J car show in Norway earlier this year, there were quite a lot of old Mazda's there including a couple of RX4's and a 929...al coupes. Pretty good club for them there I believe. I'll see if I can find a contact for them. I would hazard a guess that a 5 speed from the later 929 estate would fit as I think they have the same engine. Sort of around B or C reg...nearly all sold in the UK were estates. You still see them about occasionally.
