Until you are proficient on steel with getting the weld pool established and have mastered adding filler wire ,I would leave aluminium well alone. As said already, it’s all about practice. To start off with I wouldn’t even bother with filler wire. Have a play around with just laying beads down on a flat bit of material. If you dip the tungsten, which you will do, especially when filler wire is involved,resist the urge to carry on. Your weld will only go from bad to worse as your arc is no longer focussed, or stable and it will wander all over the show.
Bottom line is practice 😊

Only going from my experience ,but what I found helped the most was deliberately doing things wrong. Probably the most important thing you need to master is torch height and torch angle. You want your arc focussed. Too far away and it wanders all over. Too close and you dip. And once you get the height right,you need to maintain that torch height consistently. Excessive torch angle is also important. Try and run the torch almost perpendicular to what you are welding. Canted over at 45 degrees gives you no Arc control. Mess around with everything and see what affects what. Once you know why your weld looks curse word! ,your half way there to fixing it. 😂
The other thing that you will have a problem with, but Tom won’t, is that you are blind. Like it or not, you are in the demographic age wise where you are blind when it comes to Tig welding. Even if you wear glasses,( which I think you do), you are blind at the distance you Tig weld at. You will not be seeing the weld pool like Tom will. Cheater lenses. Made for blind blokes like you and I. 🤣🤣. Clip into your welding helmet and made a huge difference to my welds. If you can’t see,you can’t weld.
The biggest, cheapest improvement you will get is comfort. If you are not comfortable ,forget it. Torch cable over the shoulder helps with comfort and lessens the stain on your wrist as you are only guiding the torch,not holding the weight of the torch and the cable. At this stage, unless you have a comfortable seat to sit on, correct to the height of your table, you will battle. You will not be able to sustain a consistent torch height, so instead of a nice consistent width weld, it will look more along the lines of a constipated pigeon turd...
And practice.....😊

Thanks, need to sort a welding bench.... looked online and the prices upset me! Surely welding a bench together is good welding practice So have been trying to work somewhere with offcuts I could repurpose... but hasn’t happened Last year I could have taken more than enough steel box and sheet to build something from a place closing down... but haven’t got the space to store stuff that we may use, so try to be brutal in not hoarding stuff.... but that’s hurts eBay throws up a couple of benches, but it’d probably cost similar in steel :/

Not a huge update... May have scored some unistrut We went up the farm to get the Fug ready for Stony Stratford Show on New Years Day and the battery was flat, we did a few bits and took the battery home to charge, went back on New Year’s Eve to refit battery and bring it home... started it up and was warming it up (no chokes) and then ran out of petrol Anyway, eventually sorted it and took the Fug over, battery light was on for a while... but as it’s 10miles each way thought we’d just risk it... and then half way there it started charging. So wonder if it got damp in somewhere (?) It seemed to be making people smile But throttle was sticking, and when we arrived it would idle at 1500rpm Popped and had a look yesterday, and the gave the throttle cable a good clean and oil, which seems to have sorted it Was all ready for the Sunday Scramble this morning... and then had logistical issues so didn’t drive it..., curses!!!!

All the best to you too Title changed, it’s always a surprise when it continues to work... not because it was built by a 13 year old, but because he got assistance from me No real milestones to add at the minute though, Needs driving round o put some miles on it an oil change and service (which now I think of it is basically an oil change because it’s got electronic ignition, we have only just finished adjusting the carbs) Sort exhaust gaskets, as they are blowing a bit put the old back tyres on, because they looked better Carry on messing about and changing bits and bobs

JB has already covered pretty much everything I was taught when I did my college course on it a few years back, but there's a few little tips and tricks specific to the machine covered. They also have quite a few good videos on their site if you'd ot watched them. Good to see you made it to Stony, fond memories of that place, especially the curry house in a church (not sure if still there), that used to be a regular haunt of mine when I lived in MK

Bit of progress, had explored a couple of options for the oil catch tank... but struggled to find a good way to fit it. Ended up throwing some money at the problem and though it feels like cheating it’s sorted and we are happy with the result. Fitted a CSP pedestal breather box and sorted some lines from Earls So now have PCV from the carb to the breather box and 3 lines... one from each head, and one from the fuel pump blank plate. Used black braided nylon pipe, seemed a bit less ‘in your face’ than the stainless lines we had on before, and we think it works really well Busy next weekend doing sort of related stuff and hopefully the weather will be more and more in our favour and we can get bits done
