Hi John, hope all is well, please could you remind me the relay you used to prime the fuel pump but turn it off if engine not running ? Moving to an electric pump when we swap engines on the LR and probably ought to add a relay and a fuse ! Had a quick look but 64 pages a lot to search ! Thanks James

Thanks for this John, will make it a bit safer when we swap across. To confirm So it has an initial timer inside for a few seconds to prime then needs to see a coil trigger to stay open ? Need to mess about with the wiring as the new starter on the later engine going in has an integral relay not a separate one as per currently. James

That looks a good safety feature, just had a search and found a wiring diagram The relay looks like this So; Pin 30 has a fused permanent feed Pin 15 is a signal wire from the ignition Pin 31 is ground Pin 31b is feed from ignition coil Pin 87 goes to the fuel pump When you switch ignition on, the feed on 15 switches 12v to 87, so the pump primes And when there is a signal on 31b 12v is again switched to 87 which means the pump continues to run And ordered a relay, thanks jamesd1972 Yes, that’s the same as we wired (it works, so guess that means it’s right ) Only thing is like to find is a relay holder for ours as it’s wired with crimp terminals

Good idea to install a fuel pump relay. I've used a Saab 900 relay in my Saab 96 and I've added a Jaguar/ Ford inertia switch as well, just to be sure.

Yes - following on from John's thread (sorry about the Hijack) and him (&Boy) fitting one on the Fug. Not sure about the inertia switch on something that crashes about on normal roads let alone off road. Have you a part number for the Saab 900 relay you used - will check up how available they are as well. James

Not a huge update, but as the weather was good we went up the farm with the intention of going for a run out It’s not the easiest thing to start without chokes, and still needs the carbs setting up properly (think it’s a bit rich low down) but the electric pump wasn’t running, so we bodged that and went for a run We had a couple of issues, a cable came loose on the battery so we stopped and tightened that (once realising that was the problem) And the accelerator cable worked loose, so it idled but the throttle pedal didn’t do anything. Again a quick fix Will see what happens over the coming weeks, but ideally want to take it and get the carbs set up properly somewhere... so any recommendations gratefully received We then fitted a battery isolator switch, it’s been on the list for ages but always something more pressing to do Need to shorten the cables, but hadn’t got the right crimps with me, so we lost the excess cable in the battery box for now. Stay safe everyone

The start of this project began fairy similarly to Mercdans, Tom was having problems at school. The school were saying there was nothing wrong, he was getting really upset and had lost his confidence and kept saying he was stupid. In the end we had him dyslexia tested, as a result we found out that he is really clever but processes at the lowest school level (so they don't seem to care much, he's scrapping by) but he is really inquisitive. So alongside the work on the engine, we are also keeping a logbook of our work (and playing with speech to text software etc) and trying to answer any questions we can along the way. So we've also looked into the part numbers on the block, found out what AS41 means, and looked at how you can cast alloy. We've researched the engine number and worked out it was built in the first week of June 1973. (That probably makes me sound like a really pushy dad!! Hopefully I'm actually just helping him find some coping mechanisms for his dyslexia and trying to give him some mojo..... But tell me if you think I'm wrong!) No it sounds like your doing a fantastic job, carry on

Not a huge update, but as the weather was good we went up the farm with the intention of going for a run out Don't know if this is the right way to put it, but the Fug is really starting to look of a whole. Not just a random collection of bits, if you understand me? Or, put simply, looks pretty damn good!

Thanks I think you just have rose tinted specs on though I think the engine somehow looks more purposeful which helps, but it always strikes me as not as good looking as the Fug2s, it’s longer and the extra space though really useful (we can get a weekends camping gear behind the seats mostly) makes it a bit more climbing framey Having said that, it’s ours and because of what it is, We wouldn’t change it now regardless... so it’s nice to know it’s appreciated

We should be getting ready for the Weekender! We were going to change the back tyres back to the Enduros, because it looks better Whilst the tyres were off we were going to tidy up the wheels (particularly the paint in the slots and the rears) We have different graphics for it, to change things up a bit But instead.... I painted the windows at home (If we do get any shows later on at least I’ll have done my maintenance chores!)

Happy birthday Tom! Now, what's the next project? I think next is getting out in it We’ve got some different vinyl graphics Going to refurb the wheels Play about with front screen (had some 6mm polycarbonate cut) Bodywork you’re tidy Then take it all apart and finish it properly (unless we do something else first, and that slips down the list again)
