All good for me, I put the 944 S2 rear end on, didn't take that long, long write up on the beachbuggy.info site. Used Golf calipers on the Porsche discs and re-drilled the steel wheels to 5x130 Bit fed up with the 1600 VW engine though, it's OK but it's still 1970's, so I have only got about 2 miles on the new IRS set up which works really well and I have just started the MX5 1.8VVT conversion in earnest.

We’ve done a few bits over the Christmas period, but not had much time.... Tom got some more tools for Christmas, Went to some friends on New Year’s Eve, and Tom fixed our friends sons radio controlled car We did some research too.... whilst watching the A Team Because of the damaged spindle, we haven’t brought it home for fear of knackering another set of wheel bearings But thanks to zeberdee of this parish, we’ve got some more spindles Which are now in some citric acid to clean them up They’ll get a clean up and paint and then they can go on We’ve sorted a pillow block bearing, and are getting a steering column made up, which will fit into the end of the vw colapsible column, and have the detachable steering wheel boss (but be a bit tidier than the existing one) so that should be sorted son. I got a Scat dragfast shifter of off eBay, which has turned up We’ve got some more scrap to sort too. But I’ve been informed that I’m helping the in-laws move on Sunday, so not sure how much time we’ll have... though Tom has done all his homework already so we’ve been told we are allowed to play for a bit Hopefully we’ll get time to bend some tube, clean up the spindles a bit and sort the scrap... I’ve got an insurance quote too.... need to send some photos in for the agreed value, for which the engine needs to be in (we hadn’t fitted the engine because it’s not insured and if it was nicked we’d have lost everything... so a bit chicken and egg. But we’ll get the engine in soon and get some insurance) More soon....

Did the spindle’s clean up ok ?? Yep, we dipped them in citric acid for a bit, then wire brushed and rustoleumed them.... So they were ready to go on today... We went up the Farm and fitted them, plan was to do one side with Tom and let him do the other on his own, but I let him get started and he pretty much did it all on his own, didn’t take many photos, as my phone was tied up doing a time lapse.... not sure if it’s better or worse than photos, but Yom seems to enjoy them We got a set of drawers (better than the pink flat pack things) they are out of a school, with removable plastic trays So whilst Tom was working, I sorted the tool bag out and put screwdrivers, spanners, sockets etc in different trays, which was awesome as we can find nothing up there!! Then we fitted the scat dragfast Which makes it tricky to get my leg in But once we get the new steering column back from machining we’ll have a detachable wheel.... Now we can bring it home and sort the brake lines!!

We had good intentions today, then this happened.... So we didn’t do much! We did measure the lengths for braided flexy hoses, which I’ll try and get this week (Toms uncle has said he’ll pay!) Got a light bar this week And made some brackets to mount it to the roof tube And made a bracket for another bit... which should turn up this week.... but more on that when it turns up And had a scrap weigh in this week... and bought some ratchet spanners (which Tom was saying would have been handy whilst he was changing the spindles)

That’s funny. I was going to comment about ratchet spanner’s after watching the video of Tom fitting the spindles. They do save a lot of work.

Went and sorted some braided hoses. Earls Performance Products is just down the road at Silverstone, so popped in between jobs and sorted some bits, Because it’s so close, they gave me the hose and fittings to check the hose lengths before they crimped them. Oh yeah, Tom wanted YELLOW to match the calipers So popped up with Tom after school and sorted the lengths Then took them back up to have them crimped and finished.... You have to go into the entrance to the circuit, which Tom liked, and we saw some Ferrari’s and Lotuses (Tom took a wobbly photo from the van whilst I negotiated the roundabout!)

Had high hopes for today.... But there was a shoot on, and someone decided to park right in front of the shed.... so we could barely get the doors open So when it started to rain, we shut the doors, rigged up the light bar and worked inside for a bit! We made a start, then had to go home and meet the BT guy to fix the phone, then we collected the Fug and brought it home, and did a little bit more.... Toms brake line Weather is supposed to be better tomorrow, so hoping for a good go!

Just catching up... a few random thoughts in no order of importance... Tom's mastery of a flaring tool is greatly superior to mine. Fluoro brake lines. Now I've seen them nothing else would possibly suffice for this build! Is it wrong to covet another man's shiny black knob setup? Light bar ought to be sufficient to incinerate squirrels at 100 yards and leave nothing but ash and tiny buck teeth TL:DR; keep up the good work

Got a fair bit done, but Tom went very quiet, Lucy gave him some paracetamol and after a bit he seemed to perk up again and came back out to play... in the mean time I plodded along doing brakey things We finished off the hard lines, and got the front calipers on Then moved towards the back... got the tea calipers on, and ran the hoses to a bracket we welded in We welded on the brackets and fitted the light bar And then fitted the engine, we put the clutch assembly on, lined it up, and it wouldn’t go together.... so dropped it back out removed the friction plate and it wouldn’t go together because of old grease... we’d cleaned it up, but obviously not got into the splines properly... Tried again and all was fine, and bolted it up

Got it insured this week, so need photos with the engine in for the insurance company... hence putting the engine in now. And couldn’t resist trying out the light bar But no squirrels were harmed on this occasion Got one of the lines made up with a male end instead of a female, so will have to get another one made up, then we can fill and bleed the brakes!
