Surprisingly, nothing done today... we had about 5” of snow, so after helping Lucy get home after her night shift.... jack knifed lorries etc.. we built snowmen and went sledging instead Hopefully we’ll sort the wheel bearing during the week and then we can bring it home next weekend do they need to be 5 1/5"slots? I have a pair of 14x7.5" Appliance slot mags in 4x130 pcd that I don't think I will use. They were on the front of my buggy, fitted with some old BFG Mud tyres. The tyres are fine for off road use, but I wouldn't recommend using them on the road... I think we want skinny on the front for the sandrail look.... but will consult Tom

I don't know if they ever made 4x130 pcd in a 5.5x15 size, I thought the narrowest they did was 7", though can't be certain.
Buggypete used to be the man for slotmags, might be worth asking him. Don't think he comes on here much, though he is active over on Rods n Sods.

SSP do a 5.5" slot mag in 4x130, careful browsing might see you with a couple of them. VW Heritage have an eBay shop where they list all the seconds and ex demo stuff - well worth a look for the odd single.

The SSP ones are quite different in design to the appliance ones - at least to my eyes.

The SSP ones are quite different in design to the appliance ones - at least to my eyes. You're quite right, more like an Ansen, which in turn look like they are influenced by Halibrands. I have to confess to not being a massive fan of slotmags on most things, even though my GP LDV had them. No idea what I'd use instead though - I'd probably go for Centerlines although Weld five spokes would be really cool.

I was thinking, if nothing else then maybe the SSP ones. We’ve got some BRM 4 spokes They are quite ropey, they’ve been blasted and gone back to the nickel So I thought maybe we could paint the flats dark and the edges silver to make them look lighter, and they are 4.5j so 4” narrower than the rears.... not sure if it would work, we need to play with it and need to have panels on to see how it looks (so nearly there) but narrowest slots I’ve seen are 5.5 and the tyres wouldn’t swap over if we don’t like it, hence why we haven’t done anything Our vision is something like this (this is just the first one I found) with spokey narrow wheels up front and more solid wheels at the back (but I was lured in by slot mags... because) We are going to run mudguards on it too (unfortunately, but I don’t really want the hassle of being pulled over etc) so need to place them on too. We are thinking if we paint them matt or satin black and fit them close to the tyres they shouldn’t be too noticeable (?)

centerline style wheels could work well, they come in a huge range of sizes for the drag racers

Small fibreglass ones mounted on brackets that bolt to your spring plates (rear) and spindles (front) lotus 7 style painted black and very close to the tyre will be near invisible. Just don't ever try offroading like that!

We went up the Farm for a little while today, Too much stuff happening this weekend and next to get on, but we had a few hours... We swapped the knackered bearing, unfortunately it’s spun on the spindle and damaged that But we dressed it up for now and rebuilt it with a new bearing, but are on the lookout for a near-side disc spindle (machine7 sell new ones for £55, but hopefully one will turn up) It was cold and sleeting though Other than that, we’ve had a problem that everything in the shed was getting wet. Because there isn’t a base, the shed warms up and draws moisture out of the ground and then it condenses on the roof, so we dried the roof (I tried to take a photo but it didn’t come out, but it was dripping!) and then we’ve put a tarp floor down, I’ll try to score some 8x4 sheets from a site to put on top to make an actual floor... but this should help for now I’ve got a few more swing arm spring plates too, so at some point we can make a set of adjustable ones And had a quick play with the rear mudguards.... Plan being we can fit these to start with (but paint them black) then sort something nicer in time It was too cold really to spend much time up there, but next time we can tow it home again!

They are at the minute, longer term, I suspect we’d get some drop spindles anyway.... so if we have to buy new ones, I suspect we’d get drop spindles. But if we can find some secondhand stock ones for now, I think we’d do that...... but open to suggestions

Lucy worked last night, so we got a couple of hours on the Fug. Hadn’t really got much planned, and the wind was howling a bit... We fitted the brake reservoir And mocked up the position of the battery we’d talked about whether we should paint the mudguards black. There was a can of satin black in the shed, so with no more than a wipe over with a wonder wipe, Tom painted 2 of the guards And Tom learned about paint reactions But we agreed, that this.... Looks better than this.... We then mocked up the headlights (with a bit of angle iron and a couple of tek screws) And agreed the mudguards are much too wide!! Then Tom did a Vlog And we came home and got ready to visit people we haven’t seen all year Happy Christmas anyone reading this

Happy Christmas anyone reading this Been a good read of a great family project throughout 2017. Here's to more of the same next year! Happy Christmas from here! P.S. It's raining today and I reckon if it was only 30 degrees cooler, we'd have snow.

Can I suggest that when you attach the mudguards to the car, that you don't bolt them on, but instead just 'glue' them on. When you bolt them on, the hole creates a weak spot and the flexing then leads to cracking around the hole. I 'glued' my arches on with Wurth adhesive 14 years ago and they haven't budged, even after clocking 120mph at Brands Hatch. If you do use Wurth adhesive, just be aware that it doesn't come off your skin for weeks, so wear disposable gloves. It looks like this.

If it goes off-road gluing them on will make them last about 15 seconds. You don't tend to have the issue of 25kg of mud on them while they're bouncing up and down at brands hatch.
