Like why do you like that band? Because its cool to like that band. whereas the right answer is: Why do you like that band? Because I think they're cool. theres a difference. You see I tend to like bands because I like their music, regardless of their image or "coolness". And I think I'm the same about cars. Imps tend to give me the best amount of grin factor per pound. I'm not going to start thinking the Husky is cool or even pretty looking... cute maybe. But it gives me a buzz to drive and I can chuck loads of camping kit, spares, tools etc. in the back, so it ticks all my boxes. I don't particularly mind what it looks like... So I suppose if I needed one I'd fit a roof-rack, and a retro one would be nice, but I can't see the point of doing it for aesthetics alone... Graham

Coffee - keyboard interface - Thanks Dave
Roof racks - They can carry stuff - handy if you can't fit it all inside - thats why they are roof racks......
With the one exception of that full length one with wooden slats on the VW camper - that was a work of art - I don't think they will ever look good no matter how much tat (retro or otherwise) you put on em. They are functional and have their uses
I might have missed the point here

Although you've done it for purely practical reasons, I think it really suits your car........ plus looking are the stance of your sierra makes me realise I need to wind my coilovers down a good few inches ;D

That's what I get for posting a controversial thread on a Friday arvo... ;D
In the end, I think I like that golf because it broke so many (of my) rules and managed to (IMO!) look pretty good. It's like wearing tartan with stripes and polka-dots. If you balls it up, which is frightfully easy, it will look like rubbish. If you get it right, it has that uncanny way of looking like it just happened despite being the result of great care and consideration.

Hotwire said it better than I possibly could have. This has been a funny read this thread.... no doubt. It's funny how some people think something looks curse word or are willing to hang poo on someone else's car because they wouldn't ever style their car that way. To these people I have one question............. would you prefer if everyone styled their car the same as you have yours? Then we could all look exactly the same....... that would be so awesome. Personally...... I love that Golf that was posted in the initial post of this thread. I also love the ratty roof rack look. I'm also proud to say that I put stuff on my rack that is completely useless to my journey. It's simply there to acheive the look I like.... nothing more. It gets changed around a lot depending on my mood that weekend etc. My Corty is simply a cruiser, so I never need the rack to be useful, but I still like the look. Cool or Not Cool? Who cares !!! As many have said....... it makes no difference. I love it. Many people hate my car. I love it. That's really all that matters. As it stands there are over 1 Million people in the city where I live and there are only two of us with this styling to our cars. Once I see others doing it, it'll be time for me to do something else. My Cortina at a local show with 513 other cars. 512 of them were shiny and then there was us two. Many laughed. Many pointed. Many stared. Many pretended they didn't see it. Many loved it. I won a trophy. Happy camper. ;D

Putting "cool?" in the title is always a recipe for disaster! ;D I'll say, I guess its the people who do things just cos they think they will be cool if they do stuff, are the ones being judged. As said do what ya want which is cool. Creating a scene or style with a rack is fine. why the hell not i suppose, gives a chance to show other retro trinkets while ya at it!

i put a rack on my roof because i saw it on other cars, here and other places. i followed the fashion like a white and woolly bleat-machine. i then put a wheel on it, painted my roadwheels, stripped it out and created a car thats been likened to a paris-dakar racer many times, and the rack is the primary feature of the car.
i think its looks immense, it 'makes' my car, and it wont be going at any point, ever really, despite being pointless, uneconomic and hampering to performance.
and if i hadn't had it, i'd have had to leave half the stuff i collected at SH this year.
they is still 'in'.

Nice 'tina Mr Patina ! By the way , how much are swamp coolers over there in Oz ? I'd love one but I can't afford paying the silly money they go for over here Thanks for that. Ummmm........ yeh it cost me a fortune for that Swamp Cooler, but I simply had to have one so I sold a bunch of stuff in order to afford it. I had it sent via surface mail from USA to save money as well and it took 4 months to get here. Longest 4 months of my life. I love it though. I believe I was the second person in my city to have one and the first one I never saw, but was told about. Now there is a couple more, but still no more than 5 in total I reckon.... in a city of over 1 million people.... I'm well pleased. ;D I put a rack on my roof because I saw it on other cars, here and other places. I followed the fashion like a white and woolly bleat-machine. oh jeez...... that is a lot.......... you'd be better off buying one from eBay USA and having it shipped to you. Trust me....... once you have one, you won't regret buying it. It is the single most talked about thing I have ever had. At car shows people flock over to look at it, ask about it and take photo's of it. Money well spent. ;D
