I've been feeling roof-racks on retros lately. But, I can't for the life of me figure out why. The seem to break the rules of what looks good. What looks good (an incomplete list)Low SmoothPerhaps this is over-intellectualising. However, there is no denying the utter coolness of this: (And that's despite it breaking two of my rules: No fat whitewalls on post 1970s cars and not whitewalls with alloys. Know the rules; break the rules. Hmm...) Thoughts?

My roof rack was for getting large things from B&Q that wouldn't fit inside the car. In the 70's it was used on the roof of the family MKII Cortina for getting all our holiday luggage from home to a wet week in Wales.
In the right application though, they can look OK, but that ^^VW^^ thing looks wrong with one.

I think it goes like this...
someone decides to slap an old roofrack on their car because its ironic for a laugh, or maybe even because he had to take some wheels home from a show or something. Other peole see it and think "that must be a new trend, I must follow that, yes I will pay £100 for something you bought down the car boot for 50p"
Dunno.
I used to have one, I used it ofr moving bits that were to obig to go in the car. The problem is they make a weird howling noise as the air runs through them at any speed. They also often knacker the paint on your roof, which is a sod.
Only things I like about that Mk1 in the pic is the colour and the stance.
Care for some cheese Mr Chalk?

Roof racks with patina'd tat on pointless IMHO, however if you actually use them they're fine...... ....practical and stylish ;D

Indeed bonnets, beds, sideboards, all sorts went on there. I sold whatever car it was attached to at the time with the rack still on. I threw another one away as I kept tripping over it in the lockup.

The blue Golf looks wrong to me because that roofrack belongs on a much older car. I have an even older one for my Pop so when I go to shows etc I can take my bike, chairs, bbq, the bigger tent and other tat I can get up to mischief with ;D

Please correct me if I'm wrong but I think the whole roof rack scene came out of the Resto Cal style of aircooled VW. At least thats where I associate seeing it first. More accessories (especially if factory type) the better a car was/is. Then other styles of car appeared with them eg. ratlook and they put loads of tat on them probably as an "anti shiny car" statement. I recently acquired one (for free ;D ) for occasional use. Came in handy on Sunday when collecting AK's wheels from Speedman at Uxbridge. It IS cool on the Saab 'cos on the brackets it says "Thule: Made in Sweden" Anyway, it'll stay on there until I can get around to taking it off and finding somewhere to store it....

roof racks are for ghey mounting bikers and lady boys imo Oiii! ;D seriously, have you seen Mountain biking these days?! Its anything but 'ghey'! however these 'mounting bikers' sound a bit ghey, gives me the impression they replace the seat post for something more rubberised!!! ;D --- Roof racks huh? My roof bars are not coming off till I have collected all parts I need As for these fashion ones. never been a masive fan - they are a bit trendy, but not got a prob with em, Sometimes they work very well on teh right car/van/bus, if its what people want to do then cool, they are not automatically cool, specially as people outside scenes wont find them cool.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

roof racks are NOT cool. Roof racks on minis and VWs are even less cool.
Practical - yes. Useful and I'd have one if I needed one.
But that doesnt make them cool.
Roof racks with tat stuck on them for effect is so uncool it's untrue. Especially if its old rusty oil cans, ropes, and extra spare wheels for the wild milton keynes safari.
TBH when people are clearly trying that hard to be cool they make themselves look foolish IMO.

Roof Racks were cool because they were un cool,.. they got tied up in the same thing as rat look because that was a similar principle. Doing something that normal road users and people outside of the scene wouldn't get.
Its the same as J train handles, pinstriping, hydraulics or any one of a number of different things that make you part of a social group in a way that people outside of that social group don't understand. Its tribalism... but really at the heart of it is one thing.. Having Fun with your car.
The "Roof Rack Tuning" trend became so prevelant because it was so easy and fun to do... Not everyone wants to go super fast with their car, or make it look smooth, or go with another trend, some people just want to have some fun with their car, and some of those people saw that having stuff on the roof rack was a fun trend/fashion.
It seems to have moved on now, as fashion inevitably do... I look forward to seeing whats next..

I think they're cool personally, but I think it's mainly because I'm a big fan of the restocal look. My Imp will be getting one for two other reasons however: 1) There are lots of big f**k off dents in the roof as a result of my upside down escapades 2) I'm one of the "ghey mountain bikers" and fitting a mountain bike into an imp pretty much requires a complete strip down to the bare frame!

shame the plastic H-plates made it look 90s Yeah I know, I was going to put a period reg on it but it was pretty rotten underneath so it got scrapped at christmas after I stripped it for parts. Post 1980 minis are aweful for rust, it was minging and had only been rebuilt a few years before. My Mrs has a 79 850 city and that is completely rust free, her 97 cooper on the other hand has just had its 3rd, yes 3rd, front end since new. Nick
