Then it was time to load the Ignis with the pile of Acty parts I have in waiting. Quick check on the metal content of the replacement doors... And pleased to report that on my fourth pair of window regulators this is the first passenger one which still has the bottom glass retainer in solid working condition albeit with surface rust. All loaded up... Test fit of the front wheels and the first drop of the suspension since it went off for blasting and bodywork... We expected only the 20mm increase in tyre diameter to affect the front tub fitment but the new fronts are actually about 5-10mm lower offset than standard steels, luckily just enough space to widen the tubs enough without having to box arch the doors which I wanted to avoid to keep some originality. Really pleased with how original the VW lower panels look. The changes will be so subtle only people who know Actys (not many!) will know the difference to original. Test fit of the rears, more cutting need there too...

So after a cloudy week in Lanzarote I returned with plans to sand and paint the proton during the British heat wave but it seems I missed it. it was a bit hit and miss last week but still thoroughly pleasant. where were you staying? nice to see the progress on the acty.

We were in Puerto Del Carmen, were you over there too? It was very nice just a shame the nice weather here was last week rather than this!

Looking good.
Like you say, subtle, and mostly only noticed by a few.

More progress on the proton today, although not as good as hoped due to the weather. Sanding complete... Snowfoamed... Jetwash blasted all over... 900ml paint / 100ml meths. Kind of Looks and definitely smells like sherry trifle ... Bonnet complete, patchy but I expect that from a first coat on anything... Bonnet, wing, half a door done then rain hit... Beading... Offside and roof done before another April shower... After each shower I towel dried the panels left to paint, first coat of white done... Good to sea that the door that started out white looks a lot less patchy... Mrs Minty gets back goes mental about the paint on the drive which cleans up surprisingly easily... Mud flaps cleaned up while I was there... The white lettering since sanded off to make it more badgeless - the mudflaps are the only proton naming that remains. Looks good from up here! Sanding then another two coats (when there’s no sign of rain to follow) Then black coats on the bumpers and lower half of the doors.

I spent another hour in the drizzle this afternoon sanding all the white back with the mouse sander and 800 grit pads. It came out nice and smooth and looking forward to see how it looks after two more coats, hopefully tomorrow as it’s dry all day but hoping to get the time to do it.

Back to the grill panel that I started smoothing a few weeks ago ... This evening I sanded back the first layer of filler with 120 grit wrapped around various things with straight edges that were lying around, and wiped it down with acetone... I then applied another thin layer of big boy flexi filler... It’s a bit cold in the garage so probably won’t set enough to sand again tonight but hoping to sand and paint it tomorrow along with the wheel centres and the trim panels that mount either side of the grill panel.

The personal progress this week has largely been garage tidying and buying new bits and selling old bits. Next parts to add to the Frankenstein’s monster of a truck are a pair of Chevy rear tubs, obviously they will need cutting in front to rear dimensions which will match the height drop needed to bring them lower than the tops of the drop sides but importantly they’re 12” wide so can cover the rear struts and wheel width and spaced out drop sides... The mk4 transit ones I originally bought weren’t neat enough to be on show and needed widening too. I’ve also bought a pair of front light units from a Suzuki sj that fit into the rascal front bumper... Then onto small scale, hoping to build a 1:24 version albeit with a Suzuki ... Wheels maketh the truck Progress from the body shop is sounding positive and hoping to get photos tomorrow evening. Providing there’s no big swing in weather forecast Saturday is the day for painting the saga.

The acty looks like it’s coming on well! Looks like it’s getting more and more awesome by the day!
What is the reasoning behind putting the meth spirits in with the paint? It’s not something I’ve seen done before, was just curious...

Thanks for that I would not recommend the use of foam rollers in the first place for applying the paint that is being used - a good quality mini gloss roller would be far better - but needs to be good quality has stated not your large DIY chain branded stuff - Purdy are the go to product when it comes to high end brushes / rollers - link below www.purdy.com/products/rollers/
