They don't work like that, think of them as a file, you need to work the hole in the direction of desired 'hole extension' This is the vid i watched, granted it's enlarging a hole overall rather than elongating a hole... But that video is a grinding stone not a carbide cutter. If you were enlarging a hole, the same principle applies. In this instance you want to neatly oval the hole so it all lines up nice. Obviously.

No physical progress yet but the tools arrived, as did an intake trumpet to replace the proton's front badge. I also won this on ebay last night for the acty... A NOS bedford rascal front bumper which according to measurements will fit the acty, cross more fingers please! It's got scratches from storage but I'll get it sanded back and painted gloss black, main thing is there's no number plate holes apart from the OEM threads so I can fit my short number plate without any nasty marks showing. It was quite sweet because my "Make Offer" of £40 was ignored but I won it for £30. Also had word from the bodyshop that one of the panels behind the front wheel on the acty is rustier than expected - which means it's ripe for replacement - the silver lining to that cloud is that it will be replaced by a deeper panel so the whole rear end will be brought down in line with the bottom of the front doors and front valance. I'm picking the coilovers up on Saturday and hoping to drill in advance (risky i know) this evening - at least then i can paint the freshly cut metal and get it to dry before fitting the coilovers. Updates to follow in due course.

Nice score with the bumper. I really wouldn't worry about painting the elongated holes in the coilovers. There is seriously very little point. Just slather it all up with copper grease to prevent the bolts seizing. The ones I did for the demo are fine after 2 years of being on the car.

First bits done, Rich has already pointed out it’s easier to redrill the strut plates rather than the hub carriers but it’s done now. 🙂 Measure twice... Mark with paint where top of hole needs to be... Line a washer up with top line and splodge more paint on to get a mark for the whole circle that needs drilling... Die grinder and bits, I only used the second and third from left... Dress like orbital... Ten minutes of buzzing and a remeasure... Then rusty joined me while I did the passenger side... No photos of that side but it’s done and both the struts are off and Jonny is sitting waiting for the new struts. I then turned my attention to the front grill / centre panel. This will be painted black but before i do that I’m going to attempt to smooth it. I’ve cut the edging plastic from the badge recess... So it’s smooth from the back, I’ll try to find some random plastic to bond to the inside and then use that as a base to fill the hole with another piece of plastic and then fill the edges. If that all fails i have an intake trumpet... That photo taken before I removed label and cut out the edges from the inside. More progress tomorrow.

What a win on the bumper, I bet the seller is sick always nice when it works like that! It’s a shame about the front wings, but at least you’ve took a positive from it, and I’m sure it’ll be for the best in the long run.... Be itching the give the coilovers a try now too haha!

Hub carriers and calipers and a few other rusty bits of metal painted in black with a far from suitable brush .... An old number plate gradually clipped into shape.. ... bonded into place... A mixture of resin made up and poured into the recess... A couple of hours later and it seems a solid bond and resin cured fully... I’ve ordered some flexible body filler to give a thin skim over / sand / repeat and then it will be painted black. Coilovers also collected from zeberdee but not had chance to fit them yet so excitement might need to wait until Tuesday before I can see the impact of the proton lows.

A tickle with the die grinder on the top mount retaining cup washer thingy to get the Larger diameter strut through and a little tickle on the lower hole on the strut sandwich plate and she’s fitted... Just need to fabricate (bodge) a bracket to hold the brake hose mount before I’m done on this side. Then the wheel can go on and I can do the nearside. Only then will I see the fruits of my labours and if it’s been worthwhile!

Looks good. Debating a uber cheap project myself. Need something to tinker with, otherwise I'm a sicker for cigarettes and alcohol.
Having a "goal" helps.
Been retro/classic free for too long.

Luckily my only addictions are car related hopefully if you get a car to play with it will absorb all your money and time so that something that affects your health can’t!

I saw a photo that represented my attitude to cars nicely so I added relevant captions... And I picked my bumper up from Argos, got to love click and collect eBay purchases, and it’s even better condition than advertised.

I had a similar win with some VW Baby G60 rims, discussing a buy it now price with the seller but as he was slow to respond I won the auction at 99p!
Gave him £20 when I collected them as I felt a bit guilty as had offered a higher price when discussing them.

I've got wind of a free Rover 214 in pov spec, only 15 miles away. Fingers crossed.

A few more mock-ups... Initial P proton, based on photos before the lows project... And a more (currently) realistic mock up of the Acty now that the front end isn’t being dropped but everything behind the front wheels is being brought down to the level of the doors in front of the front wheel... (Drop sides and rear tailgate will be fitted too but not added those to mock-up)
