Hi all A new fleet addition means a new readers ride thread But first some background info... I see vehicles in a similar way to tastes in music, sometimes it's difficult to explain what is so special about your favourite band or musician to somebody who doesn't "get" it. I seem to have this same problem with my weird taste in vehicles although more recently there seems to be a growing fondness for the type of vehicles I like, whether this is because the world is becoming more rebellious / alternative to the norm or whether it's just easier to find like-minded people in the internet age I'm not quite sure but either way my interest for weird vehicles hasn't waned. I first wanted a Bedford rascal (not vauxhall because I didn't like the front grill / panel as much) back in the mid 90s when all my friends wanted beetles or minis but my interests took other turns and I never got around to buying one. It was that interest that led me to this forum in 2011 via google and no prizes for guessing it was Bruce's rascal build thread that was the honey to google's bee. Well I missed out on buying that one as times just weren't right and then I also took an interest in JDM Guys' Honda Acty back in summer 2014 but timing wasn't right for that one either. Over the past year I've let fate steer my life more and a few weeks ago I was scrolling through my instagram "explore" feed and up popped a honda acty pickup in mint green because a few people who I follow had liked the photo. A few double taps and follows later, I commented saying I'd only followed so I knew when it was up for sale and then only to find out that it was for sale... Oh .... aahh .... errr ... sod it, i needed a new cheap to run daily so why not just go for it?!

So after a few messages back and forth a few days later I found myself on the first of three trains (with one way tickets) and a 4 hour journey from Cannock to Chippenham via Birmingham and Bristol armed with a bag of tools ... First rule of buying a vehicle ... Don't go in the dark ... [X] .... That's what cavemen invented torches for right?! Or was the wheel not invented then?! Second rule of buying a vehicle ... Don't buy the first one you've seen ... [X] ... I've seen photos of other ones on the internet so that counts right?! Third rule of buying a vehicle ... Don't let your heart rule your head .... [X] ... Nonsense my heart is much more fun than my head! I can't think of any other rules right now but pretty sure I would have broken them. Any way I got there, saw it, grinned, looked around with a torch, couldn't see any holes, engine yep it's got one, started fine, although forgot manual chokes existed, went for a test drive, forgot how weak old brakes can be, nearly ploughed into house because I thought I'd stomped wrong pedal but it was right pedal just not hard enough. Survived that, grinned some more. Chatted with owner and family, swapped cash for keys and headed to petrol station. Obligatory photo of first fill up (£18.xx) which even on morrisons fuel has given me 150 miles so far ... It has the look back and smile appeal which is what everyone demands from a vehicle. And on the way back I even took it round the clock... Delivery miles only It was fine and fun on the motorway, only concern was the swarm of bees that followed me that seemed to get angrier the faster I went. I did experience one problem of it cutting out when dropping off revs but a quick rolling key turn at junctions kept it going without skipping a beat. A quick engine bay check and messages from previous owner confirmed that these two labels should be connected as part of choke ... Sorted that and only other cut outs since seem to be me getting used to manual choke levels and gears / clutch control. Life in the auto luxury of the Elgrand and previous cubes and smarts has left me somewhat wanting in that department. Oh and other thing with manuals is that you can leave it in gear... Which I did and turned it over ... Gave it some choke ... Ploughed into a bin and luckily not a wall ... Good job it was already dented and I wanted the shabby chic look! Introduction of new pet to son seemed to go well although he said he didn't like his face at first and was disappointed that it doesn't talk. (He later apologised when I said you've made him sad ... This is Ethan's reaction to the acty, not the acty's reaction to Ethan which I'm yet to establish because, as said, it doesn't talk...yet) Good Friday came, lovely weather to make the Acty my own and show it off to a few car friends. Removed the aftermarket stickers, oil cooler and brackets, subway grab handle, neons (led) kit, and re-routed the air horn wire from the footwell to up over the headlining and back down. These are all things I see the appeal of and have bought myself but don't tie in with my plans for this project. I also ripped out the carpet as it was in the way of the accelerator pedal and I found a hole in the floor to sort at some point. Only other thing to sort was a cigarette charger for my phone (done) and a rattle CV joint for which I've bought a tub full of grease.

Cheers, plans are just lows and keeping natural age-related marks on the outside but making everything all solid and clean and perfect electrics / mechanics underneath. It's so basic it will be nice to use it as a learning project and the tiny engine really is all that's needed to send me and the truck hurling along up to 45mph with nice low gear ratios.

Superb! I'd like to get my mitts on one of these sort of things. Narrow enough to fit down the snicket behind my house to get stuff to/from the garden. Which I think is entirely justifiable. Mrs_pOG suggests I just buy a new wheelbarrow.

super deluxe, is that super deluxe or 80s super deluxe - i.e has a cigar lighter and clock I do need to investigate the additions to the sd model - a clock?! That's dreamland! Oe features are a heater, choke, speedo, temp gauge, fuel gauge, glove box lid, ash tray. Not sure which of those you could drop really!

Cheers, will do. If there are any ankle problems I bet I could convert the Acty to a hand accelerator / brake easy enough

If my memory serves me right, the engine in this is based on half off a Honda gold wing bike motor. I wonder how hard it would be to fit a gold wing lump in the little truck.
