last time I looked here you was just starting on the spare front suspension and now it looks very good. can not wait to get stuck into my camper What van have you got? I have a 1985 GMC vandura high top with the 6.2 v8 diesel auto. been sat of the road for 5 years. its 300 miles away on a mates driveway waiting for its mot so I can drive it back to cornwall will be using it to tow my drag car and weekends away

Personally, I think you've got the shape right for a van that's been converted to a camper. They look like they're supposed to be a little bit more special than a standard van but within a certain budget, if that makes sense? The only embellishment I could imagine being there would be a small plate with the coachbuilder's details on it nothing too ostentatious, just a discrete thing each side like this.

Few things been happening. Local factors had a box full of those white reflective door protectors. In the top of that box was some mk1 astra pedal rubbers. The accelerator one looked like it would fit the CF. They disnt know they had it so I got it free and its perfect! I took the leaking exhaust off and bodged it for a weekend away. It blew again after 150 miles and over the weekend the leaking gas melted a 12" hole in the water tank. Ive repaired the tank but finding an exhaust was being tricky. The odd mild steel leftover stock at £200, unknown quality stainless at £400 or a custom made top quality replica made in stainless for £500 (they make their own replica mufflers and everything!). Then, I found new aluminiumised steel ones in germany. £168 posted. I have put new pins in the rear hinges too. Next on the agenda is to finally fix all the little annoying leaks but waiting to see if I can get some flat top pistons first. van did its round trip to wales with no issues at all though apart from the zorst. Still need to get to the bottom of these juddering brakes too. Think I'm at the stage of fitting new wheel cylinders and shoes and seeing what that does. Unfortunately ive done my back. Ambulanced to hospital and fed every pain killer under the sun. Home now byt still self dosing and buzzing so cant do anything on the van

Whenever the rear drums have been off my transit they judder for a couple of 1000 miles then settle down.

Whenever the rear drums have been off my transit they judder for a couple of 1000 miles then settle down. Really? Ive probably got 1000-1500 miles on them since rebuild. To recap, they didnt do it before and everything has gone back in the same place I think. Ive cleaned, adjusted, bled, champhered, sanded, done everything I can think of but cant eliminate it completely. Leaves me with 3 options I can think of. Drums arent round (they show no wear and didnt do this before) Shoes havent gone back in same places (thought they would have worn in again but maybe not. Loads of meat left but unknown age, might replace anyway) One wheel cylinder weaker than other (none leak, pipe feeds into one cylinder and out then onto the second cylinder, might replace to rule them out). They stop the van just fine but judder quite bad when braking from speed. Interesting that yours take a while to settle. These don't seem to be getting any better of their own accord though. It has me puzzled as they were fine before I took them apart.

Sounds just like mine...no rhyme nor reason that I can find but I was warned they had a habit of doing it if everything didn't go back 110% in exactly the same location.

Maybe ill leave it a little longer then.
If the shoes need to wear in again it will take ages. There isnt much meat on them from new so they don't wear down too quick. That and I don't do much heavy braking in it.
Maybe ill fit new shoes instead. They will need to settle in too but at least they wont have the wrong 'set' on them to start with.

Hi there
I have had lots of cf's in the past and I thing you'll find that if you chamfer the leading edge of each shoe it should sort out your juddering.
the juddering is caused by the leading edge of the shoe picking up on the drum. The shoes used to come with a chamfer on the leading edge when new.

Chamfering them did help a little but not solved it.

Hi is the juddering from the fronts or rears ? Fronts. I know as some things ive done have made a slight improvement. Things ive done that have actually improved the juddering are... Fix the vac leak on the servo Adjust the brakes to as close a tolerance as possible Adjusted out a tiny bit of play in the wheel bearings chamfered shoes still there though. I'm going to try and check the drums for roundness (I'm expecting them to be fine) but ill check anyway to rule that out. I just refitted the repaired water tank and put the new exhaust on. Fits well and seems good quality so I'm happy with that.

the fronts were always poor for noise/judder even when the vans were new! I guess that's why they eventually went to discs, as for the rear door hinges they should have a standard size split type tension pin with push in plastic caps to keep the dirt out and any lubricant in, the clutch linkage on the gearbox was always a problem as well with the bushes wearing quick and making big oval holes, it really does make a massive difference to the pedal feel if you can get it all tight again with new bushes

There great when there right but they need to be kept on top of more than any ive had before. its also been suggested I should check the tie bars, it may be the front axle moving back and forth. Ill have the clutch linkage off and check it properly, I didnt really look at it when it was apart. There was meat on the clutch so I just put it all back in. Know much about the gearboxes? I posted a stupid question in the tech section about it.

the Vauxhall box has the gearlever coming out of a box on the side of the gearbox which is the same release bearing as the Vauxhall cars eg Viva/Victor/Magnum 1.6/1.8/2.0/2.3 ohc cam, if its the ZF 4/5 speed then its a different bearing which is also the the same as the firenza droop snoot models, was that the question or was it something else?

what make is the auspuff ? is it one of those IMASF ones ? Yes. Only ones available. No idea if they are generaly any good? Made in italy, seems well made, its heavy which has got to be good. Bends seem less restrictive than the old one.

I messaged them on ebay, they asked for me e.mail and gave me a direct link to a special price deal. It was this company (no doubt the same) www.kfzteilehandel.de/shops/Paying them turned into a bit of an issue but they sorted it out eventually. Why is it nearly always friendlier, cheaper, quicker and easier to order stuff (any stuff, not just car stuff) from germany than from within our own country!

nothing bad happens when you take the bottom cover of the box, you will need a gasket though and the oil will smell like satans blood so try not to get it on your clothes the smell never goes!
|
