Sorry but i would have to do this.. Or this.. Or even this.. Because little screams the '80s quite like a Maestro van as it was in it's day, and i'd have to add to that instead of taking that element out.

I would do it if it was an actual ex gas or rail van etc, but the only history is that it was the fleet test vehicle at an Austin rover dealership somewhere up north and according to the previous owner it was at a bakery most of its life but there's no evidence of any signs/ decals on the sides. To be honest I quite like it how it is as most of them that are left are the ones that were used at company's cause they looked after them a bit with services etc. My dad has an ex AA T4 and it was serviced regularly by them until it was sold to the public, and its in pretty good nick

Love what you're doing with this - those arches and new alloys look the mutts!
Good tip re the breathers; if you can't clean them by soaking in thinners etc. you can cut the tops off, clean out the insides, and weld the tops back on if needed.
I had to do that on my old Montego when they got so full of crud that the pressure built up and blew the crank seal out - along with the oil! I got the car off my Dad, who had given it occasional short trips as a tow car for tip runs with his trailer, and hadn't been giving it a damn good thrashing to clear its tubes so everything got a bit gunked up.

Yeah I think the previous owner just used it around town, need to take the timing chain cover to blow one of them out but it's a job for a weekend thanks for the advice

Got insured on the van yesterday and drove it for the first time to my mates workshop a few miles away, drove okay, a bit bouncy as the coilovers haven't been set up, but had a pretty major miss fire. basically I couldn't go past half throttle so was down to 15 mph up hills which was depressing! Anyway he gave me a coil to try out as I fitted a rev counter and it was going haywire with erratic readings, so it was the first port of call. This sorted out the jumping readings from the rev counter (but I still think it reads wrong) but not the miss fire. I went into my local GSF and asked for some leads, plugs and a coil, turns out all they could give me was plugs as the rest were discontinued! Managed to order the leads and coil from a more independent parts shop so waiting on them. I went home and fitted the new plugs as I had a spare 5 minutes. The old ones were completely black! a bit of research says its rich mixture so I backed it off a bit and put the new plugs in, not expecting anything tbh. But low and behold it cured it, and for what it is she pulls rather well! I still think I need to clean out all the breathers etc as there is a bit of oil and gunge coming out the exhaust suggesting the engine isn't breathing properly. And I have a feeling the new plugs are going to be blackened in a matter of time. However I really enjoy driving it and love the confused stare I got off one guy when I was in town!
Next on the list is to fit the new ignition parts, clean out the breathers and buy the other tyres to get my nice wheels on it before any shows.

Did a bit of work on the van over the weekend, fit the new coil but the leads were wrong so need to get replacements next time i'm in town. Also got the timing chain cover off so that I could clean out the breather that's attached to it. Was definitely blocked so used a lot of parts cleaner but managed to get a steady flow through it and put it all back on so now the engine can breathe I also forgot to add that I cleaned up one of the seats with my mates wet vac, not the best pic but about 2 shades lighter and there was a hell of a lot of crud in the the waste bucket. I took my girlfriend back to her parents today and got to give the van a blast on the back roads, that was until I got to a hill! Has developed a squeaky brake on the way back though, guessing its a sticky piston, gunna take a look at some point. Have some pics Cant wait to get my other wheels on though.....

I've been away in Spain for the past two weeks doing work experience with the college I'm doing my apprenticeship at. Was a great time, but I was secretly looking forward to coming home and putting my wheels and arches on Today was that day, put the back wheels on first. Then did the fronts and attached the arches using domed black screws. Then I adjusted the coilovers as the ride was very bouncy, just screwed the collar up a few centimetres to compress the spring a bit. Then lowered it a little more (I will probably lower it a bit more when I next get time). Took it for a spin and it rode so much better just from a small adjustment, rides very nice now ( For a lowered van at least!). Need to keep an eye out for some more golf arches for the back now But I'm so happy with how it all looks.

Thanks for all the positive responses! I'm so happy with how it looks Have been down to a mates to set up the alignment, the toe was way out, no wonder it steered a bit weird. Handles great now, you could really chuck it in the corners if you wanted to. Also the camber is at about -2.75, but needs to be to fit under the arches and IMO isn't too much Have also ordered a couple of arches for the rear so will chuck them on when I get a chance.
