Got this van late last year to replace the Scirocco as the daily whilst it gets refurbed. It was in alright shape just dirty and slightly rusty, but i could see the potential through that The plan is to lower it and get some nice wheels and get it on the road when the Scirocco insurance lapses.
It did have MOT when i bought so the theory was 'it cant be that bad' and to be fair for a 27 year old work van, it wasnt. Heres what it looked like when i got it...
Anyway, we got it home fine loaded up with all the spares that came with it!
Had a good look on a ramp and discovered a couple of dodgy repairs on the rear of the sills but not too bad. The only other bit of structural rot was the rear shock mounts, so i got cracking on the repairs.
and then the sills
Not bad for brushed 1k Acrylic over anti stone chip
I did do both sides but pictures of metalwork can get a bit boring!
Then i got to lowering it, i did my research and found that mk2 Golf coilovers could be fitted pretty easily. And being leaf springs on the back i could get some lowering blocks. I had a look at the suspension and its very similar to the vw way of doing things so i went for it, and with a bit of a file and a tiny bit of grinding they fit beautifully.
I got 2" blocks for the rear too
That brings me onto the wheels, the van is a different pcd to the cars. A car is 4x95ish and a van is 4x114.3 which does give more option other than MGF wheels! But i wanted something that is the same rolling radius (195/60/15) but with a 50 profile tire. this ment i had to get 16s but i didnt want them to look massive. Also i wanted the wheels to fill the arches nicely not be tucked away. Some xxr0.02? came up on facebook locally they were 16x8 with a very low offset of 0. I just did a few calculations but just thought screw it and bought them cause the seller had other buyers interested. I knew they would have a bit of poke but they turned out to stick out quite a bit! Is it too much? like legally? i will be running 195/50s to keep the radius but havent got them yet. the pics are with 195/45s
I did manage to get them in with a bit of camber adjusting
Anyway so thats where I am, will post updates when i get some more time on it
Cheers, Alex
