Loving the van, just subscribed to the Tube channel as well. I do know of a couple of vans locally, both been sat on drives for many years sadly. I must go and see if they're still about. Keep up the good work.

Sorry its been a while! just a quick update in that i've still been using the van alot over the years although its more of a weekend driver or obviously gets used for van duties! However its coming off the road this month as it needs some work for the MOT and I want to concentrate my time and money finishing my TVR for this summer. I'm probably not going to get round to doing much with it until next winter but then it will full steam ahead with the 2 litre swap Ill keep you posted with it when I start it. If you subscribe to our Youtube 'the rust room' a find us on Facebook and Instagram all the content of the engine build is on there and also the TVR rebuild. Almost made it to 7 years of this thread and have owned the van a little over that now! After spending the last couple of years restoring my TVR S (see the rust room on Youtube ) and getting a new job recently the van has been sitting in my unit since it ran out of MOT in March this year. But now I've finally moved to a unit closer to work so I can start on the 2 litre swap. The engine is ready to go in but I have some ideas regarding the front suspension and fuel tank I need to investigate. hopefully this will be the year the 2 litre bursts into life...

So, I have started the engine swap on the van, it started by removing the trusty A series which has served me very well the past 5 years or so taking all the boost I threw at it! Then I could look at the engines side to side and compare the engine mounts that I needed to use. Look at all that room for activities! I found some of the mounts that came with the new engine and box and the only one I'm missing is the front crossmember mount, this was fine for test fitting purposes though. I then lowered the new engine and box in. It went in remarkably well as although the engine is bigger the new PG1 gearbox is much more compact. It also has a Torsen diff from a 220 turbo . I am very happy with how it fits In the bay and cant wait to get more done. Now I can take it out and clean up the bay including a couple small rust spots/holes near the strut tower I've been putting off till then engines out. Started looking at routing the coolant hoses this evening. Looks pretty straight forward and un complicated with no water cooled manifold to worry about. Just used some pipes I had laying about to mock it up. I'm picking up a job lot of maestro turbo parts on Friday so there should be most of the bits I need to get it running. There's also even things like driveshafts and spare heads and turbos to keep on the shelf as some of it specific to this engine.

Since getting the engine in I've started plumbing things in. First I tackled the dump pipe, I used what I had left from the A series and cut it down as the turbo is on the back of the engine this time. Was quite a tight bend but made it work. I've since bought a few joines and hoses for the cooling system and made it work with some other hoses off the old engine plus what I had laying around. Re built the carb as well so I can work out where to run the intercooler hoses next...

Finally got the 2 litre engine started the other day! I had a no spark issue that I had traced back to the ignition ECU being faulty. I had a local auto electrician look at it and he deduced it was the output transistor that had failed. This made sense as the signal comes from the crank sensor ( which was showing signs of life ) then through the ECU and to the coil ( which was within resistance spec ). Unfortunately its not a part he could find as he couldn't test the old one being fried. I took a gamble and bought an N/A one off ebay as I was told that it would still run on it. Got spark straight away and with a bit of choke fired up and burst into life. Buzzing to have it running after all these years of planning. Next step is to borrow an extractor and get it up to temp and idling so I can give it some proper revs and see what it sounds like Then hopefully i can use parts off the N/A ecu to fix the turbo one which has different ignition maps for the boost. I also sorted an intercooler for it from a defender 300tdi. Its full width with both inlet and outlet on one side for ease of plumbing.

Love this, do you know what wheels your winters are? So they are xxr but I can't remember the model name off hand, I haven't seen another set for sale so I'm guessing they don't make them anymore...

Yeah I believe the engine was originally from a rover sd1 2000, previous owner rebuilt it with a cam and a manifold for dual Webers which should be a laugh, I can use the original mgb 4 speed +o/d, just needed a Sherpa backplate to make it fit

Have been up the unit with the fume extraction borrowed from work. This meant I could get it up to temp and idling. Also could give it some decent revs to get an idea of what it's going to sound like 👌 I got it up to temp idling without any intake on to start with. Then I could check the torque on the head bolts. Now I know it fires up I can run the intercooler hoses and took the opportunity to rad flush it as the block was still quite rusty internally. With all the boost hoses on I could give it some revs and try and get some turbo noises. It built a massive 1 psi free reving but it was enough to hear the turbo spool and a tiny little flutter 😏
