Excellent work with this one, you'll crack it in the end - hopefully with this! Full 12v conversion on the cards? Yeah thats the plan, I love the fact its 6v but after seeing how much airflow i get and how quick it drops temp with a 12v fan it has to be done. Just waiting on a 12v alternator to turn up and i can work on the wiring side of things.

The alternator will also increase the voltage which will result in a good increase in the power from the fan. There are also some very powerful 2 speed OEM fans out there - so the 12V swap will give plenty of potential for further improvements in airflow should and issues arise with higher road speeds.

Imagine the police pulling you over on your test run?
"But I need to test a 12v fan officer"
Glad to see you have got a proven solution.

I was thinking about dual speed in the future but ill need to look into it abit more for the correct fans and stuff.

Glad you’ve got it sorted Adey. As it happens it was Calsonic I used to work for.

Glad you’ve got it sorted Adey. As it happens it was Calsonic I used to work for. Hopefully sorted 😁 as it seems good ill spend some time sealing off and plumbing it abit better then test again once the electrics are in place. Today was kinda hot too so I really do hope it's now sorted. Cheers for all the help with it all to you and everyone else that have chipped in 👍🏻

Great work Adey.
It looks a much better size of rad than the other more suited to the engine.
On wards and up wards now you have a solution tho the cooling problem.

In today's news, I'm 85% it works. So i made some poorly fitting radiator cowling and very poorly rigged up the fan to a relay and a 12v car battery i borrowed off a friend. The fan shifts some decent air when running. So i bodged it all in, held the header tank in with cable ties and used some odd hose pipe for one of the hoses just to test it all and went for a drive. I did a short run then checked everything over and tested the temps, all good. Then a slightly longer run and did the same and all was still good. So i beat its head in for 6 miles, harder than i ever had down some B lanes whilst scaring myself at how badly it handles when driving it abit loony, high revs up hills and still it didn't boil over and the highest temp i managed to see was 90c on the radiator inlet. I didn't manage to get it into the red on the standard gauge though i can now see how vague the gauge is. Ive probably tested for about 15 miles today now but didnt want to chance taking it for a run on the motorway with all the bodges in place. Id even lost some of my cowling at some point too so air was going straight through a 2 inch gap right across the top of the radiator and theres plenty of gaps for it to escape from elsewhere so i can only improve on that too. All in all i think its a WIN. So just need to sort an alternator so i can rewire everything and properly sort the coolant hoses, cowling and brackets. I fully approve of this solution. Looks done to me! Crack on and enjoy putting some miles on it at last!

ha if it was so simple.
The shopping list is growing again to get it all finished off or at least usable. I need a new header tank, i really don't like the ones i have but have found some aluminium barrel ones that are horizontally mounted that look like they could work nicely. Need to order some wiring for the fan (any ideas on what size i should buy?) and some for the alternator. I'm guessing my 30amp 6v relay will now need to be put aside for a 12v version with integrated fuse? Some ali and silicone pipe but i can get that from forge motorsport. I need something to make panels off to block off all the air around the radiator. The old stuff that ive used has been chopped so much its not usable. Something light and easy to work with, the current stuff was an old safety sign or something, like a lightweight but thick plastic? All new bulbs for the car, flasher relay, a few voltage droppers for the fuel gauge and temp gauge and ive been told i can use a rheostat for the wipers. Oh and a battery, the local scrap yard sells them back off tested good so ill just pick one that fits the battery box. I'm off work again for a week as of the 24th so id like to have it completed then to use it a little.

I used an old washing machine side and a rubber strip from, I think, a pair of scrap sliding doors the last time I made something like this. Also found that a roll of damp course 'plastic' is stiff enough to resist folding back from some other experimentation. P.

Excellent news that you’ve hopefully solved the issue It’s a very cool little car. Also I’m glad I read the thread, as I’ve also been battling some overheating issues and I hadn’t thought much about my electric fan being directional. It definitely said it would push or pull on the eBay listing so I didn’t think anything of it, but looking at the blades they are definitely going to push better, and stupidly there’s also an arrow on the motor, in the direction that would be push! I’d had it set-up to pull, so I best swap it round to the other side of the radiator!
