If you're after a 2wd setup then you're as well making up a new front axle tube without the diff in the middle.
Personal preference would be to keep the four wheel drive as the front end holds onto the road a bit better for it.
I ended up with the M52 as it came up on ebay at a good price and it wasn't far from a friends house, and they were kind enough to go and snatch it for me. It dropped in with less effort than the Merc engines would have to boot.

I was thinking about the single tube concept and just bolting the FWD hubs on the ends... Sump clearance ok?
As for the M52 - Cant fault your thinking there. Did you need an adaptor plate?

Blank off the swivel ball and leave the CV joint in there (with it full of oil/CV grease) as the king pin bearings rely on the CV throwing it about to lubricate them, otherwise it's nothing hideously complicated.
Yes I used an adapter plate, as detailed a little earlier in the thread. There are other ways of doing it, but this suited me with what I had 'in stock' as it were.
Sump clearance is excellent as the 3 Series varient of this engine had a rear bowl setup. It's like they were designed to fit in a Defender from the outset.
The other novelty is that since the BMW lump went in, it's stopped leaving dribbles of oil everywhere it's been parked for more than ten minutes.

Yes. Photo hosting is a bone of contention across all the forums I frequent.

I saw you today at Flamborough. You were parked up at North Landing loading up the Landy, I was the numpty in the yellow cycling jersey. I was reasonably sure it was you by the colour of the vehicle, but was convinced it was you when you overtook me heading back into Flamborough village. It sounds MINT! Nice red dwarf t-shirt too....

Yup, it was me, and I recall passing you and companion in a red jersey.
We were there for the week at wife's suggestion as she has lots of happy memories from being their as a child. Must admit I like the place, quiet and unspoilt, and no pillocks to complain at me throwing a ball for three excitable hounds.
Anyways, thanks for your positive words, I wouldn't have been averse to having a craic and showing you under the bonnet if you'd said hi whilst we were loading up.
Back home now, and I can report it's behaved itself pretty well. 460 miles with the caravan in tow and a steady 55-60 when possible saw it returning 19mpg.
Conversely, a run North to Dalbeattie a few weeks ago with an 18ft flatbed Ifor Williams and a LWB Series II on top for the return run saw 22mpg, although there was less traffic to cope with.
I have suspicions that there's a leaky injector or two, which isn't helping things. Some checking to do...

Had youngest daughter at the workshop with me earlier today, so got her to hold the camera and shoot a video of it on the move around the yard.

I drop in from time to time. There's at least one M52 RRC in the UK.
