Hi all - I'm looking at starting a new series of features in Retro Cars, and need your help! I've run them successfully in Performance Vauxhall (which I also edit) and would like to run them in Retro Cars. The premise is simple - people love to see the work that has gone into making cool cars, and while Feature Cars are great - there's never enough page space to show the work that has gone in to them - at best a handful of pics are squeezed in to the feature somewhere. The cars don't need to be full-on feature worthy cars - just cars that have been taken from the brink of extinction and transformed into 'finished' cars. If you're interested I'd need 20-25 images throughout the build process, from the beginning to the end, showing the key stages. Importantly these images need to be high res (around a 1meg upwards per image). If they're only a few kb they will probably be too small to use, so harvesting them off an existing build thread will probably be unsuitable as most are resized for web use. If you're up for it send over a couple of pics - preferably before and after shots to retrocars.ed@kelsey.co.uk. Ideally you will have carried out the majority of the work yourself, although it's understandable if you've entrusted some the tricker aspects to a specialist (welding, paint, electrics etc). If the pictures are suitable I'd then ask you to supply a brief caption with each pic, and a bit of blurb about the car's story (you don't need to be a literary genius, just give me something to go off). Here's an example from Vauxhall showing what the feature will look like - I envisage them going over 4 pages. If you're up for it, let me know!

Looks like an interesting feature, I would offer some of my cars but nothing ever seems to get finished around here.

Every time someone posts something about featuring somebody's car on a website, on TV or in a magazine some get really offended by it. Am I missing something? I doubt very much the people who are wanting to feature the car will become millionaires of the back of the feature. All I see is magazines getting thinner and thinner and using lower quality paper.
I have been lucky enough to have a car featured in performance VW in the past. I wasn't paid or offered expenses and didn't expect anything. It was a great experience and a good feeling to see your car in print and hopefully appreciated by others. We all want our 15 minutes of fame don't we?

And the publishers, who often don't give a toss about cars or our hobby and only produce the magazine for advertising revenue, receive the benefit of your hard work by filling the pages of the mags as cheaply as possible with stuff that's already available for free on the net.

People like it. It's interesting. Not everyone goes on forums. The fact that it's 'free' (which it isn't as it takes a lot of my time to sort out - people need a lot of assistance to deliver what's needed for the feature to work, words need rewriting, pictures need chasing up etc etc - it's not an easy feature to put together). The fact that it doesn't cost money doesn't mean it's 'lazy', it means that it frees up my very limited budget to help pay for decent photography so I can be MORE fussy. I'm making the best magazine I can with the limited resources available to me. And the publishers, who often don't give a toss about cars or our hobby and only produce the magazine for advertising revenue, receive the benefit of your hard work by filling the pages of the mags as cheaply as possible with stuff that's already available for free on the net. If you don't like it, don't buy the mag. I'm just trying to do my job.

What a ridiculous statement.....
