Well done getting the linkage off, cleaned up a treat. Here's a pic of the equivalent Mk2 Golf bits I removed from one of mine years ago... I bet I've still got that tool somewhere, will have a look in the garage and also I'd be amazed if there wasn't a box of various bushes for these which I've had left over from various cars over the years. I'll see what I can find and if any suit you.

The main issue I'm having is finding these parts!! They are literally nowhere!! The top green circle bush (existing) is part number 823 711 593 B, so I would assume the other corresponding bushes will have part numbers near this? This is proving a headach! ETKA is the best source of part numbers; here's a link which may be useful. Another great source which I found invaluable when rebuilding my Mk1 Polo was the VW Classic Parts Center in Wolfsburg. They have access to the entire global dealership network and can recall parts from all dealers; my tips are (i) to always correspond with them using part numbers and (ii) if you can, correspond in German (I'm fluent) which gains alot of help from them!

green circled bushes is definitely need, 823711281C bearing bush x2Red I'm assuming I need based on the pictures from the Haynes (although I can't find any reference to them online) 811711551 support arm (the bent metal bit- the bottom bush in that doesn't seem to be available separately) 811711552A support arm (other side)

Ah amazing, thank you, hadn't seen your previous comments. Those two metal parts with bushings in are crazy expensive, $180, when the bushings were probably only a few dollars :-( they also look like they come with the top 2X bushes as well (green circles), or do I probably need to order them too?

Not sure to be honest as I can't find any pictures of the parts themselves. I'm wondering if it would be easier to measure up the parts and get someone friendly with a lathe to machine up some bushes out of delrin/acetal as your metal bits look fine it's literally just the bushes you need.

I'm wondering if it would be easier to measure up the parts and get someone friendly with a lathe to machine up some bushes out of delrin/acetal as your metal bits look fine it's literally just the bushes you need. I don't even know where I'd begin with that! I still don't even know which bits are supposed to have bushings, as all the illustrations/schematics are showing different things or not showing certain bushings existing at all. I also don't know anyone with such tools or skills I'm having an absolute mare with sourcing bushings or even full linkage parts! There's literally nothing out there! - Absolutely no sign of 823711281C, part discontinued in 2005 - Also no sign of 811711552A, again discontinued in 2005 - I've found 811711551 here (I think!), which may, or may not come with bushings. I already have this metal part and both in-tact bushing parts (the orange bushing and black boot, top green circle). If it comes with them, I might be able to find another bushing the same as the right hand one in the pic below (red circle on my linkage). I could then use that on the other metal part (lower red circle). Then all I would need is the orange bushing in the lower green circle - I already have the black boot as can be seen. I've ordered part 811711551 which was Ā£12, but Ā£36 with delivery, robbing bar stewards. If it comes with the bushings, is there be anywhere I could send my linkage off, plus the existing bushings, to get the last parts fabricated, and perhaps to make some copies for future use? And I thought brakes were difficult to sort out

My day job is 3D CAD so I'd be happy to do some drawings but I'm the other end of the country to you, if you don't mind sticking them in the post. the guy that owns a moulding and toolmaking company I work with is a massive VW nut so I'm sure one of his guys could machine something up. Once you've worked out what bits you need drop me a pm :-)

Almost any machine shop will be able to turn up the round ones, out of plastic as mentioned above or even bronze which press in, the oval one will take a bit more work but again anyone with prertty basic milling equipment should be able to make one.

The generosity on this forum never fails to astound me. Your offers would be highly appreciated! I'll wait until I get the part from Germany to see if it's got any bushings attached. I'm hoping they've actually got it and it's not just an old page that's been left active! And if they email me telling me they don't have it, I won't understand because it will be in German Quite possibly, might be able to borrow a few pieces from this! Might see if a local autofactor has something similar as I could easily take it back if not without messing about with postage. Also ordered a new rear washer jet as mine was knackered. Put 100psi through it with an air hose and it still didn't unblock! Will also need to touch up the paintwork which got scuffed when removing the jet Nothing too major though! Thanks guys, I seriously appreciate all your comments and help. Not really sure what i can do to repay you, except offer myself as a spare pair of hands if anyone ever needs them!

Ok, progress potentially! NOTE - YOU CAN IGNORE THIS POST, IT'S FOR MY OWN REFERENCE I've continued researching the bushing parts and happened across this VWVortex site - forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?4812685-Shifter-bushing-madness-part-2I've managed to find; Cancelled 2x Lower bushings HAVE ORDERED $26.82 + $14.36 audi.bernardiparts.com to US Mail forwarding service (2 parts) - Also ordered 823 711 594 B 823 711 597 (They're sending 811-711-597 as 823 is discontinued)...........4spd NLA except Brazil $15.43 - Bernardi Parts Cancelled 1x Right upper bushing.......4 & 5spd HAVE ORDERED $0 (paid for above) audi.bernardiparts.com to US Mail forwarding service (1 part) - Also orderd 823 711 597

EDIT - An order arrived from Germany - part 811 711 551 containing both the large upper bushing and lower bushing. This, paired with the 2 upper bushing boots, means I now only need 1x upper bushing, 1x lower bushing and the ball socket, and I have complete linkage again! Also got an email from the company shipping 2x lower bushings - confirmed their part is out of stock, but the replacement number is the same as supplied in this photo below, so should be a perfect fit Also means I will have a spare. Still have that feeling that many of these won't actually be in stock, they're just old pages that have been left active. All minus delivery charges which might stack up alot, but also the American ones won't deliver to the UK. I've put out a request on Facebook for help from my American friends. We shall see! (The above info is partly for my own reference so I know what I've ordered etc!)

Sigh. So the only 2 parts I need (823 711 597 and 823 711 594 B), I've ordered from the same company, Bernardi Parts, are being pretty useless. They emailed me last week saying that 823 711 597 have been replaced by Audi with another part, 811-711-597, and did I want to have this item instead. Yes, it's an identical item, I will.
They've now just emailed me saying that the items, listed on their website as AUDI Bushings, are actually VW parts and so cannot be sold to me. What?
"I am sorry to inform you that these items you had ordered is not available from Audi. These are Volkswagen parts. We are only a certified Audi dealership based in Massachusetts. We could only order parts for Audi vehicles. We canāt order Volkswagen parts because we are not a certified Volkswagen dealer."
Bit confused. Both items are clearly labelled as Audi parts, and regardless, they're EXACTLY THE SAME ITEM for mechanically identical cars. Why are they selling VW parts on an Audi site if A - they're not Audi parts, and B - they can't even sell them?
A company to blacklist for incompetency, boys and girls!
On a lighter note, I shimmied under the car in the pouring rain and played about with the gearbox rod. Managed to click it into its reverse location, fired up the engine with the clutch down, slowly released and...wheels start rotating anti-clockwise, a la in reverse. So hopefully it really is just the linkage that fubar'd.

Now I have no idea about this next statement lol.
Could you change over to a cable gear selector system? From say an Audi A4?
I don't actually know if that would work, but if it could then may be a cheaper option.

I don't actually know if that would work, but if it could then may be a cheaper option. I've just had a quick Google and although this is probably possible, it's far beyond my capabilities. Seems it requires actual engineering. I've managed to find one other place in the us which does the parts I need, who I've used before. Fingers crossed!

Yeah. I've ordered a few bits from them, great for most parts but they don't seem to do any bushings for the B1 estate, only the saloon Still waiting for confirmation of my order from VW Vortex for both upper and lower bushing of the right hand side. I've got everything else now (well, at least know I've secured the items, they just need shipping to me). Might pop them an email if they've not confirmed by tomorrow afternoon. 4 days from ordering seems excessive just to process an order...

Hi all, Just after a dash of advise on something else I'm clueless about. My entire exhaust system is dead - everything after the exhaust manifold pipe is corroded to hell, well beyond repair. From what I can ascertain, it's pretty much this system - www.volkswagen-classic-parts.de/en/abgasrohr-d2aede.htmlNow I'm hoping for an MOT quite soon, but this is one job I'm not too keen on doing myself given the position and nature of it (quite dodgy under axle stands!) My question is, if I drop the car off to a garage prior to the MOT, will they be able to fabricate a new exhaust system from parts they already have, or will they have to order everything in? If the latter, then it might be worth me ordering things in myself and delivering these with the car for the works + MOT. Thanks in advance!

Your best bet would be to pop into the garage and ask them - workshops vary enormously in what they are willing to do for non-standard cars.
I know the place I suggested to you re the MOT often have unusual cars tucked away whilst they try to source parts, or sometimes whilst owners try to make up their minds what to do.
Alternatively try Central Tyres opposite Staples on Sealand Road. A couple of the guys there are pretty decent about sourcing bits for obsolete models. But call in because they have a new (and very nice) receptionist, but I doubt she's into old cars so you might not get too far on the phone.
Fitting exhaust systems on a driveway isn't fun - just had to do one having promised myself never again.

Time for my regular 'I don't know what I'm doing and I'm getting peed off' posts.
So I've had all my bushings finally arrived from America. Fitted them all and got the linkage in. Still can't select reverse, and both first and second require you pushing down the stick as if going for reverse. I've even tried manual putting the gearbox in reverse (so i know it's there and it works!) plus keeping the gear stick in reverse while I attach the linkage. They just don't line up, or the gearbox pops into first because of the pressure I'm putting on it to try and attach the linkage while in reverse.
I'm tempted to just stick it in a garage and let them work it out. Spent hours trying to get it working with no luck!
