As part of my ongoing mid-life crisis I'm giving serious consideration to buying an S-type. Not this type, lovely as it is. But this type: I've done a fair bit of googling and have seen an appetite for suspension arms and auto box problems which I plan to dodge by buying a V6 manual car. Have any of you wonderful people any experience of them and can you comment on what they are like to live with? Also can you recommend a Jag forum frequented by ordinary blokes who don't mind getting their hands dirty?

I bought one in February and I have'nt really looked back. The best piece of advice is to buy as late a car as possible, I got a 2005 car which is the second to last time they updated it. The last update was 2007 with the addition of the DPF which I wanted to avoid! Uneven tyre wear shows up the suspension faults. Electric hand brakes, air con systems and random wiring faults can also be an issue. Mine is showing an ABS fault on the dash at the moment, there's nothing wrong with any of the parts, it's a wiring fault. They're really easy to work on, I replaced the servo on mine a few months ago and for a job I was totally dreading, it only took half a day. The best forum I've used is www.jaguarforum.com

Oh and rusty floors, again it's early cars which suffer most, later cars have a full sill cover which keeps most of the dirt away!

+1, for the "www.jaguarforum.com". I joined it last year, to carry out some groundwork for me possibly buying an XJ. I wanted to know their pitfalls/problems, before I committed to looking/ buying one. The site is full of very good information, from people already running these cars. Lots of technical help & knowledge available, from down to earth people.

I've used the Jaguar Forum and it's ok. It's the best Jaguar-specific forum I've used anyway. On a side note, I can see this very car through my office window from where I'm sat now.

If you are after A 2.7 Watch for the Cats as they crack and need to be sleeved which involves taking them off which guarantees the bolts into the turbo will snap Cheers Alex

It'll be petrol all the way for me. I don't do anywhere near enough miles for a diesel to be worth the potential extra grief and I don't really like them that much.

If I had a quid for everyone I know who does a tiny annual mileage but paid extra for a cheaper to run diesel car that ends up giving loads of grief and costing a fortune, I'd have about a fiver now.

Top grammar tips! Bought = purchased. Brought = relocated Lose = misplace/opposite of win. Loose = your mum

Check carefully for rust, rear subframes rot beyond repair and sills/inner sills/sill strengthener rot very badly too,I had one in work last week and the whole lot had gone front to back.the plastic covers make it worse and hide it until it's mot time. Typical ford build quality and rust proofing,x-types are the same.....

If I had a quid for everyone I know who does a tiny annual mileage but paid extra for a cheaper to run diesel car that ends up giving loads of grief and costing a fortune, I'd have about a fiver now. Same here. I calculated the difference once for someone looking at a new Porsche Cayenne and asked them what they thought the difference would be per year and they said something like £4k and it ended up being about £600 and as you say, when you factor in the potential pitfalls on a used Turbo Diesel compared to a nice NA petrol, it'll be negligible if you're lucky or end up going the other way!

I fell lucky with mine, after I bought it I was going through the receipts and it had only just had both turbos and EGR valves replaced, the cost was more than half what I paid for the car!

Lots of these comments above are exactly why I still have a (small) bank balance, & no XJ/ S type, on my drive right now !
