Of the s types which is the better engine? Which should be avoided? I've been doing a lot of reading - it looks like the 2.7 diesel is a Peugeot lump that can be temperamental and expensive, as well as commanding a premium over the petrols...it's the only one to be avoided. Owners in here could add more...

I know someone who has a 2.7 that is as good as gold. It's a second car only used for long outings and gives no bother at all.
My 3.0 has done over 160k and doesn't use any oil. It still goes ok too.
There are plenty of mega mile examples of all flavours out there.
The bigger concerns are electronics and rot to be honest.

Of the s types which is the better engine? Which should be avoided? I had a s-type with the 3.0 litre V6... This one, it was great and low mileage, I really liked it. I always wondered what the V8 one was like so... I bought this one with the 4.0 litre V8, and an intergalactic mileage. In all honesty for everyday driving they're very similar, everywhere, around town, out on the motorway, even at the pumps. Very similar. But, ones got a V8... So that's the one to have!

ive only had the 4.0 and 4.2 both are great in my opinion, the 4.2 is the same as in the later xj, xf and xk's. i wouldnt say there is a massive difference in performance 20bhp more i think, but they are alot better on fuel probably due to the 6 speed bmw gearbox.

Rather than the engine, it was the engine electrics which were the issue on my 2.7D. Constantly flagging up errors where there wasn’t. If you do go diesel, get one pre DPF.

I've heard from people a friend of mine knows in the trade (I'm talking about one or two of the Jag parts retailers here) that the diesels are to be avoided completely. If you don't have electrical issues you may have DPF or turbo issues. Worse still, the cranks aren't unheard of for snapping in them. He went out to get an X350 XJ6 TD. In the end he got an XJ6 V6. So far he's liking it . It comes back to Midland Performance & Retro's argument about fuel vs. repair bills and the higher initial purchase price.

Not driven one at speed but I regularly have to sit behind a three litre whilst doing my rounds (owner must commute home at the same time as I'm between calls) and whilst it catapults to 80 out of corners, it visibly wallows and has to settle into the corner itself. It's also consistently 15-20mph slower than i am through corners which makes it annoying to follow as the driver never lets me past. Dunno how much of that is the car and how much is the driver though... *n I don't feel like I've been holding up the traffic in it. It's not a sportscar but it's a lot more precise than the outgoing Saab. I'd forgotten how nice the steering is is cars that don't have driveshafts on the front tugging it around. Saabs handle curse word, end of ; nothing to do with it being FWD. On the driveway and our cars this is how I rank them for handling -BMW M3 -Ford Mondeo 2.5T : 70-80% of the handling of the M3 but maybe not quite as sharp. It's a nicer drive on bumpy country roads however -Mercedes W124 : This isn't miles behind the Mondeo at all, but it doesn't quite have the speed in the tight corners. It's nicer on bumpy country roads ; I could have used it when I drove to Swaffam and the iffy roads there! It's a little safer than the M3 in very wet and recently snowy conditions. -Saab 9-3 1.8t 'Vert ; this car has the lowest mileage of the lot. It *may* have a little more speed in some places than the W124 but honestly it drives curse word. Steering has zero feel even compared to the steering 'boxed W124 and if you attempt to push on in corners it just washes out without much feeling. Are you feeling the love? Me neither? Feeling the back step out on some exhuberance and come back in does make the experience nicer. Even the comfort is no different to the Mondeo, maybe worse despite it being on baloon spec 16" wheels. I'll say one thing though ; the tyres. The M3's on Michelins (that is OK on Falkens but nicer on the Michies), Mondeos have always had Michelins and now Goodyears, except where one year one had Uniroyals ; it was OKish with them but much better on the Goodyears and with longer life. Turn-in response returned from it having the shot 'lower arm' and tired damper feel. The Saab has always been on Kumho KU31s which I've never been keen on and Toyos on the back which are OK. We're about to put 17s on with Contis ableit part-worn which may change the above. But except the M3 when I'm merely commuting it's the last car I'm inclined to grab the keys to.

Mine had a bill for turbo repair at £1600 just a few weeks before I bought it and it would still occasionally throw up an actuator fault!

Guess what was behind the passenger side sill cover of my S-type when I removed it a couple of weeks ago? Rust lol There's that. Behind the front 8 inches or so there's absolutely nothing. I suspect that when it had tyres on in the summer they put the jack under the sill and it collapsed.

Ouch, glad I went for the Rover 75 when I had the choice. Never seen rust on any of those.

Ouch, glad I went for the Rover 75 when I had the choice. Never seen rust on any of those. Me either. Someone at my work has an estate that I find surprisingly appealing. No regrets though, even if I have to scrap it next week. I'd always wanted a Jag and I've done it now instead of carrying on saying "one day.....". The difficulty comes if I have to replace it. Everything I like is either really rare or hard to find a decent one amongst the dross and I don't like anything as much as the Jag.

Not that I'm aware of re: the estate. I think from that era of Jag's only the X-type was available as such?
I had a lunar grey 2.7d and it was awful, the petrol's I tried were much better and you don't lose a significant enough amount of mpg to trouble the difference in price. I spent 6 months trying to get a good mpg out of it but in reality with normal driving/life you're not going to top 35 and with the petrols getting close to 30~32 it's not a massive gulf. As has been said the weight means you need to budget for suspension bushes and tyres which were the expected price for what was originally a £35k car.

I also had a X-type estate, with the transit diesel engine. I wouldn't say it was awful, it just wasn't as good as I thought it should be. My X-type

I can get over 30 on the motorway quite easily but 25 is a more realistic average.

I used to get about 25mpg out of my diesel... my grandad got 12 out of his Petrol... and he drives like... a grandad lol

Hmmm maybe I drive slower than your Grandad Ryannn? lol I think my average for 12months was 29~32 from the Jag, although I don't check I get about 19~22 from the Skyline...
