Hi gang, with my mental health still dragging me down I have done absolutely nothing since I painted the GTI valance! Well that's not totally true, I attached the brackets on to the driving lamps, which took about 2.5 mins then put them back in the box. Iv'e not really noticed this before but this time of year really seems to affect my mental health. As the dark nights (4pm up here) have come in and the weather has turned wibblepoo, I have become more and more withdrawn from the world, and just want to shut myself away and hide. I don't want human contact, talking to people is a real effort and if I can avoid it I will. My girlfriend Gwinni is just so understanding, she is the best girlfriend I have ever had lol! and when I want to run and hide in bed at mid-day she just gives me a kiss and says " don't worry you might feel better tomorrow " Anyway sorry for going on about my problems, I have actually got some car news... So the ar$e has fell out out it lol! well not quite, but the rear beam is buggered! Iv'e got so much negative camber on the d/s rear wheel that the inside of the tyre is rubbing on the wheel tub. So in the morn I'm going back up to Tain to buy the rear beam off the GTI breaker that I got all the other GTI stuf from. I'm trying to view this a good thing as it means I will have gti suspension front and back and also the rear beam has been lowered the same amount as the front struts that i already have, and its only £60 too. On the down side its forecast to snow in Tain tomorrow! If everything goes to plan I will get the beam home and get it wire brushed up and painted and hopefully fit it next weekend. Thanks for looking Steve.

That's sounding good mate. As I was reading this last post I was thinking I can get rid of the rear beam I got in my garage lol Good news on the beam price. You may find you'll need new beam mounts, but you'll see when you come to removing it. If you need any pointers on the beam fitting/removal drop us a PM Best of luck to you.

jonxs are the beam mounts the kind of square rubber things, with a bolt either side? I will take the mounts off the GTI when i get the beam and if they are the same, I will have the mounts from my car too so hopefully between the two I can find a decent set. I'm not looking forward to laying on my back in the wind and rain doing all this but if I don't I don't have a car so its kind of good in a way cos its forcing me in to action lol! Plus once the new rear beam is on it will sit well lower than the front, so I will then have to do all the front end too, Its been sitting in the shed ready to go on for ages now so like I say forced in to action lol!

Yeah they're the ones. They'll be the same on the gti also. Having 2 trolley jacks helps or 2 people lol, if you was closer I'd offer assistance. I've taken mine off 3 times overall, now I have a fully rebuilt one I've got no worries for a while lol.

It's hard to get motivated this time of year. Try and fill your day with repeats of only fools and horses, the car is born series and wheeler dealers. Distraction and comedy are great for low mood. Girlfriend is a keeper, better get a ring mate best wishes Jed

Don't know if you got it down in Englandshire? Its two glasgow pensioners living on a council estate, Its so funny. Its on netflix just now so you can see it there, you wont be sorry

S'no too bad, just do a half hour sitting next to it reading your fave mag/book. Whether or not it makes any difference depends on the person. I also find it real handy for working on the car, its so bright. Sort of two birds with one stone sort of thing. However, I prefer a bit of new age'y' 'mindfulness' for keeping the spirits up. Google Jon Kabat Zinn!

keekster thanks for the info mate. If you're wondering why there are no pics of the new rear beam yet, its because I don't have it yet! I was meant to go get it last Sunday but like a total bell end I thought it would be a good idea to have a few beers on Saturday night. Woke up sunday morning feeling wibblepoo, both physically and mentally so asked the guy I'm buying it from if it was ok to leave it till this sunday and he kindly said it was fine. Sometimes I get so annoyed with myself! I'm 45 years old and there seem to be lessons that I just refuse to learn! The car has of course been getting worse this week, so much so I have stopped using it now. I could have had the new one painted and fitted by now if I had gone last sunday. In other news it snowed up here the other night, only an inch or so, but the next morning when it was melting I fount a nice little puddle in the rear p/s footwell, about an inch deep! This is from the sunroof I'm sure. When I bought the car there was gaffer tape all round the sunroof ,and since it was summer I removed it all to see if I could find a cure for it. I got as far as buying some new fiber washers (but didn't fit them)then kind of forgot about it till I found the puddle! so I have bought a roll of black gaffer tape to seal it back up till the spring time. There is no way I'm taking the sunroof out in winter when I don't know what I'm going to need to fix it, and could end up waiting for parts without a watertight car. It feels a little bit like its going down hill a little bit lol! But its not really, it just means its going to get better sooner! NOTE TO SELF.... DO NOT DRINK THE NIGHT BEFORE DOING SOMETHING IMPORTANT !!! Thanks for looking steve.

Hey stevie I think those sunroofs have drain pipes that run down the a pillars. Might be able to get something thin and bendy down them to unblock them. I had to give up the pop 3 years ago I am 45 too. Had years of depression, panic and anxiety. I used to drink 8 cans a night at home 5 nights a week. Always felt sh1te the next day. Especially as I manage 25 peopl in an office. Awful, tried to cut down but in the end just had to knock it on the head which was hard but not ar5ed now. Feel a lot better tbh, no more panics. No snow in Blackpool but plenty of wind rain and I have a week off to lay my driveway! Great!

tineca Your right about the drinking mate, I have stopped before for a few years and it does make a difference. I used to drink everyday (years ago) now I will only allow myself a 4pack of beer once a week. It still does me no good though! You are also right about the drain pipes, I just had a quick look in the haynes. I think there could be more that one problem with the sunroof though so I'm just going to tape it up till spring time and concentrate on getting the suspension sorted out. Cheers steve.

Thats me just back from getting the gti rear beam. Big thanks to my wee bro for giving me a lift up to get it. By the time I got there, Stu (seller) had already removed all the bolts that you access in the boot, so all I had to do was cut brake pipes and cables and it was off. While I was there I also scavenged some window rubbers/scrapers, as mine don't scrape and have chunks missing. Right I know you must all be dying to see a $hite pic of a rusty rear beam, so here it is... It was peeing down with rain, and its not very interesting, thats my excuse lol! It would seem that I may have a 2-3 hour period, tomorrow morning, that its not raining so will try to get it wire brushed, then in to the shed for paint. Cheers steve.

Right the rear beam has been given a good going over with the wire wheel, I also wanted to take the drums off and check out the brakes. One side came off no bother and the brake cylinder looked old but no sign of any leaks. I striped out the shoes and removed the cylinder as I wanted to clean a paint the back plate. On the other side the drum would spin but didn't want to come off, so thinking the shoes might be stopping it I decided to unbolt the brake cylinder and try to poke it through in to the drum. This helped but still it didn't want to come off so I decided to resort to violence! Once I had shown it the hammer for a while it did come off but left half the wheel bearing on the shaft! Out came the grinder and off it came , but this now leaves me with this question.. are the drums and wheel bearing the same on 1.6 gti and lesser models? If you know the answer please speak up. The reason I need to know this is because if they are the same then I can just use a drum/bearing of the old rear beam, if not I'm going to have to get a new bearing pressed in to the gti drum. Once I have walked the dogs I'm going out to the shed to treat the beam to rust treatment then give it a coat of paint tomorrow. Cheers steve.

I have a 1.6 beam fitted on mine. I think the drums may be a wee bit wider but its not a problem. The answer is it fits fine

That looks good. I once took the drum of a 206 my daughter had and had to use a puller. It pulled half the bearing off too. I just whacked it back on and tightened it all up . Nice progress stevie
