Hello everyone! First post on here, will get round to uploading my minor resto thread soon enough. But the main point of this thread, is that I need a bit of help deciding on my next one... Currently have my '69 minor off the road for some work, but should be back on the road mid May. I intend to use it as a daily through summer and sell my current daily, a 2004 MG ZR 105. I want to replace the MG with a 2 door coupe from the 80's/early 90's, to be a fairly reliable all year daily covering approx 7k p/a (with the morris doing 3-5k through the summer). I'm not all that interested in speed, (would much prefer a car that handles well on B roads ) and would like to get at least 30mpg on a normal A road run. Not too fussed about cosmetics, as long as it's mechanically and structurally sound I'm happy! So, with a budget of £1500 for the car, I've narrowed it down to 3 choices that I can insure for <£100 a month (ah, the joys of being 19): A 2.0 N/A Porsche 924, a Volvo 480 (any engine), and a MK2 VW Scirocco. 924s are starting to creep up a bit in price, so getting a decent one for £1500 might take a bit of searching, but I recon my budget will easily get a nice rocco/480. I've been set on a 924 for months, but the more practical and slightly cheaper alternatives are looking more tempting every day... Considering all the above, has anyone got any advice? Thanks!

I've had both a 480 and a 924 and they were great! I couldn't fault a 480, not only is there a great forum for parts and stuff but they can't get any cheaper!

924. I'm a bit biased though.
I've got one and so has my brother and they are just good cars. Easy to work on, reliable (for a classic) relatively resistant to rot and easy to get bits for, not to mention the solid residuals.

Porsche. Because then you've owned a Porsche and therefore you've pwned everyone in the pub. (even if it was an Audi cast-off with a van engine )

I'm 21 and picked up a 924S last year with sub 100k miles for £1400, but believe me, it's not been cheap to get up to spec! If you're on a budget then an N/A would be perfect as if you give felixp's thread a read, you can run the N/A's on a shoestring for years thanks to a plethora of vw/audi parts. Not biased at all though

Volvos 480 are nice drive, full of gadgets and economical. Go for a turbo, if you can.
However, their reliability (or their lack of) can be challenging at times. Electronics do go wrong and they do rust. They aren't build as a tank like their Swedish brothers.
Can I suggest the obvious BMW E36 325i or 318is?

I've owed a 924 and afew 480. In fact the 924 on sale in the forsale section was mine. I would have the 480 over the 924 . The 480 is a better drive imo. Again try and get a uprated model turbo, celebration ect. Never had a rock so can't. Help you on them.
Cheers Chris

You will have your pick of 480s for £1500, I think I paid £200 for mine.

924. 50/50 weight distribution, and you can say you drive a Porsche. As you have mentioned they are only going to appreciate and they may not be mega powerful but they're still very good fun to drive.

Another vote here for a 318is.
But, from your three options I'd go for the 924, then the Scroc and forget about the Vulva.

I'd vote 924 but I'm biased as well because I've had a couple but the driving position and no pas on the na isn't everyone's cup of tea. if you can book a viewing of one of each in a day and Have a go to see what you prefer.

sort of in a similar boat, another interesting one (might be a bit dodgy on 1500) is the toyota mr2 AW11, they look awesome imo and are apparently amazing fun to drive

Hey, thanks for all the replies everyone! As much as I am tempted by an E36 318is, the insurance for me is £1500+ being 19 with 3 points. Same story with the MR2, which I also love, but I really need rear seats/boot space for lugging musical instruments and stuff around. So maybe a few years down the line for either of those... Yeah, I've read quite a few 924 threads, I know those by Felix and Mrben practically inside out - they were what inspired the choice of a 924 to start off with! I'd deffo be looking for a later 1.7T or 2.0 480, the most I've ever seen one go for was £1200 but it was full leather and absolutely mint. As for the 'Rocco, I'd be looking to get a later one but haven't looked into them for a while, so I'll need to get reacquainted with all the trim levels and engines - any pointers for what to go for/avoid? I think the best way forward from here is just to try some of them out really. I wont have the money for another few months yet anyway, so plenty of time to swither. Thanks again for all the replies, keep them coming!

Don't know about the Scirocco or 924, but for 480 spend the money to get the best one you can. Don't spend the money on doing one up. Prices for 480 have been low for the past 5 years and I don't see them raising anytime soon. An VW or Porsche is more likely to appreciate. Even with the 480 having links with the P1800ES and being Volvo's first FWD. Volvo-480-europe.org is not that active anymore, but it has a huge amount of info on them. Still, I do like them

I've had both Scirocco and 924, can't comment on 480's though. Scirocco is a really undervalued car, look at the price of Mk1 and Mk2 Golfs. Same engine and suspension so parts are reasonably cheap and easily available. Mine was a 1.8 carb and with a Weber on it was uber reliable and good fun to drive. Nice sporty driving position, plenty of scope for upgrade.
Currently have a 924, as you say prices on the rise. Got my '77 for £1200 a few years back but your looking at at least £1500 for a half decent one although there are still bargains about. Good fun to drive, great handling etc. K-jet can be a bit of a ballache (hence my bike carb conversion) The main negative for me though is parts availability/price. Where as for every VW I've had parts have been cheap and plentiful loads of bits are no longer available from Porsche. I've had to get creative and source bits from other cars so it is possible. Always good to say you drive a Porsche too.
