I've owned a mk 2 Rocco GTi, really early car with no bodykit, and it was great to drive. The problem is although lower than the Golf the prices are creeping up and it may be a struggle to find a good one. A local car here just sold for £1500 and yes it was tidy but it was well north of 200k miles. Couldn't tell you about parts, found a decent interior in a breakers as the dash was badly cracked but flipped it quite quickly as an E23 came up.
I really like the look of the Volvo, I was looking at a really clean '95 car just the other day in the supermarket car park and thinking I really like that. If it were my choice I'd take the Volvo, the leftfield choice of the three. Funky interiors and cheapest of the three so you can buy the one you want, not the one you can afford. Better still if you can find a decent turbo.

Seeing as I didnt really answer the question.
Out of the 3 I would pick a 924.
What about a Corrado?

That is one major plus of the 480 - I could get a top spec one in really decent nick and still have money to spare. And the cheapest insurance. Scirocco and 924 would just have to be the best I can get for the money, but then I guess now would be the time to get them rather than in a couple of years? I do keep my eye on the corrado market, I think finding a nice, original one for £1500 with <200k miles and no dented panels would be pushing it a bit, especially ruling out beater VR6/G60s. I think it falls into the same category as the 318is and the MR2. I can't wait til I turn 21 and my insurance plummets!
Another car that I looked into a few years ago is the Audi Coupe GT - any owners on here?

'69 Morris Minor '92 Scirocco Scala Standard formula, take a scruffy car, add fog/spotlights, roof racks, wide wheels and lower it a tad and job's a good 'un.

I almost bought a 924 as a daily before I got my sensible shoes on again.
In your case I would go for either a 924 followed by the Scirroco. The K-Jet IMO is not that bad but you do need an understanding of the system and not be willing to bodge it/much around with pattern parts, something far too many people do with cars with this injection system. I am biased though ; My RST is the 3rd car I have owned with a K-Jetronic based injection system.
Parts for them are reasonable and the 924 OC are a great bunch of guys.
Just to throw a spanner into the works you could look at a 106 1.4 XSi or 106 GTi; these are superb cars for £1500, but again it will take time to find one worth buying.

add S12 Silvia, S13 200SX and MKI MX5 to that list, covers your pop up headlights fetish ... Volvo 480 is a great car, I loved mine, but it was plagued with electrical problems and heating problems and they do like to rust...

I had a 924 and a Mk2 Scirocco and miss both. My dad had a 480 Turbo and regrets ever parting with cash for such an unreliable, fault ridden, leaky foot spa. He donated it to my sister when she wrote her car off, and after 12 months after failing the MOT in spectacular style she left it there, the mechanic took ownership of it and they waived the MOT fee.
If you're buying for reliability and practicality (a bit) then Scirocco is better. Decent boot, can fit actual adults in the back. For me it would be 924 all the way. Probably won't go as well as a sorted GTX but it will be a lot more fun and 'posh' feeling than the Scirocco.

Having owned 5 480's inc the forum known Vader. I would avoid 480's at all costs.
Trim is poor. Eletrics on the infocenter fail and it's poor mans trip computer the T2 turbo gives out a 120bhp in standard tune. Fit a rich mod ECU for about 170bhp and makes it a much better card. Avoid autos (rubbish ZF HP4) Pop up lights go mad seat belt arms snap off dashboard is made of yogurt pot plastic imo wishbone mounts wear very quickly IDLE issues are common. rear seats are only for kids or small adults at the max window motors break a lot. rear aches rust away otherwise not too bad.
Much better and tuneable are the 940t models. 100 x better in my book.
Each to there own but that's my ownership. I was young and silly I guess to continue with them. I loved my 940 turbo with a 15g upgrade.

I've never owned or even driven any of the cars mentioned here, but I had a 2.0 liter 460 with a ZF automatic box for 3 years. They're technically not great cars and I had several of the faults mentioned before, most notably electrical gremlins (starter motor/alternator due to ground problems), and also the occasional cooling issues. However, I never really fixed it much and I used to borrow/rent it to people without an interest in cars and they'd manage with it (usually complaining only about the continuously opening glove box lid...). I'd imagine if it would have been a hobby car that I'd really liked I could have sorted it out reasonably well.
BTW I sold when the one year old ATF smelled burned, and given the lack of an ATF cooler I'd say avoiding the automatic gearboxes may indeed be a wise idea...

The Scirocco is based on the MK1 Golf, i had a '90 1.8 GT in the late '90s and it was superb. Felt solid as a rock, swift, great driving position, visibility, tardis boot, but handling was it's trump card.
I may well end up with another.

I do regret killing mine, it was such a unique car. Get a 480, they need to be saved from extinction

Probably the Golf/ Polo collies could work on the rear as well. It is a live axle like the K10 Micra after all. My wheel tip would be Rota OS Mesh in (15x7 ET35, if they ship them) flavour with an 195/50R15 (today I fancy Yoko AD08R) topping.. And in time to steal the show in Shelsley Walsh...
