Awesome! Sure he's pleased to see one of his creations get the attention it deserves.
I never really understood the negativity around the Allegro's styling. I always thought it was quite a well resolved design with a fair few neat points of interest. It's no Stratos, but it's a far cry from a Mk2 Scorpio.
Perhaps it was a 'tastes of the day' thing.
Either way, awesome to have the stamp of approval from the designer himself!

Mann's original design for it was superb but the bonnet was lifted to fit the tall engine / gearbox in, end result is fine but not what it could have been. All manufacturers had to make compromises but leyland somehow seemed to revel in doing it in public!
I'd love to see someone chopping one back to his original intent.

I suppose they don't look particularly tall compared to most modern slab-sided efforts, but clearly it was noticeable at the time.

I think that the main reason nobody liked these is because they were made by Leyland and everyone loved dissing Leyland and everything they made.

I never really understood the negativity around the Allegro's styling. I always thought it was quite a well resolved design with a fair few neat points of interest. It's no Stratos, but it's a far cry from a Mk2 Scorpio. My parents had a couple of them in the 70's - the final one a Vermillion 'top of the range' version. That car was trouble from the very first day, it was simply not built well, the list of issue that we had were incredible, over the course of about a year it was in and out of the dealer more often than you can imagine. The final straw was when my mother was driving home from work in it and the bonnet flew up and flattened itself against the roof and showered her in glass. The was collected by the dealer and a brand new VW Golf took its place on the drive shortly afterwards. The Allegro should have been a hatchback, the Golf and others were proving how sensible they were and the shape looked like it was - I can remember my mother specifically being disappointed that my father had chosen this over her choice - the Golf as the Golf had a hatch and she had a bad back. My memories of that car are limited to it breaking down a lot and the door falling off one day as my mother tried to load us kids in the back

Trip to the Dyno on Sunday, time for some mac valve wastegate control.
Good and bad really, it made some boost, but the wastegate isn't strong enough to make more than 20psi, I need one with dual ports. Also the boost over 8psi wasn't consistent, it would seem there is a leak that opens up at higher pressure but closes intermittently with heat and it's very laggy.
New gaskets for the turbo flange ordered as one part blew out, and a leak tester for the cold side
332hp was seen though, road testing afterwards suggests that could be near the limit of my driving ability at the moment
Equal length shafts are also looking more likely required, however it's a hoot to drive!

332hp ! great result. with that power to Allegro weight ratio "a hoot to drive" must be understatement of the month

Yeah with the turbo there is a lot of torque, you can now steer just with pedal input lol

The piston and rod combination are good for 700hp so I don't think I'll need to! This engine has a billet flywheel fitted which I couldn't really afford when mine was built, so if I do end up using this lump I'll get a flywheel upgrade at least! Just ordered a posh solid state battery isolator and the cheapo ebay one in the car now only contacts when you push and hold the plastic key in

Right, cars been sat in the garage and not run since November! So got a little time to make a start on sorting it out. Painted cam cover now on Turbo is currently off to change the manifold gasket that I blew out on the dyno

Back up and running slowly getting ready for being at the NEC again in November Battery isolator working well all wired in and the turbo is back on. Next job new seats I think, oh and test the china Turbosmart type wastegate actuator with 1 bar off the compressor, yeah lets not forget to do that!

Man this is such a cool car. What with this and the retro power version starting to come together we're replete with cool allegros.

Gauges updated, was getting sick of failing sensors on the previous ones.
