This is pretty much how I'd have my red one. Top job as always mate. You'll be like a kid at christmas when you drive it Cheers I am pleased with how it's turned out. I test drove it on Wednesday night and did about 20 miles. Problems are that the exhaust is catching the floor mainly when pulling away and accelerating hard. I have a solution for this in the shape of an extra exhaust mounting and I forgot that the speedo cable was disconnected behind the clocks so I had to guess what speed I was going. The steering wheel shake is no better. I think I am going to get the wheels balanced again for piece of mind. Finally when on the motorway at decent speeds the temp gauge goes down to nothing. Possibly air in the system still. An afternoon should have these ironed out. However in spite of these little niggles the car performs well and is like going from a 1.1 to a 1.6 all over again. I decided to give the power run on the rolling road a miss due to the steering issue and will go when the above issues are sorted. I am thinking of 175/60/13 tyres for the steels to give me a bit more ground clearance and improve the ride. I could not get away with 185/60/13 without trimming arches and I don't fancy going down that route. Maybe when I have sold all the xr2 parts I have removed I will treat myself to a set. Then I will have pepperpots as an option should I fancy a change.

Long time without update. Been on a few sprint days at Curborough and after joining the Shenstone car club who run the track I must admit that the member days are great value. It is £30 to join the club and then £5 on the day to take part, there is roughly 1 members day a month and for your £5 you get to go round the circuit using 4 different layouts. I had great fun and will be doing more of them in the coming year. The car has performed well and not let me down a all. I do have a slight problem with it randomly cutting out when you are slowing down for junctions when you are just coming to a stop and dip the clutch it will die. As I say it is random and behaves 95% of the time. I am thinking the cheap fuel pump I fitted is not keeping the pressure and I will buy a genuine bosch one I think in an attempt to cure the problem. The paint still needs mopping along with a replacement bonnet as the front is rusting now worse than before it was painted. To be honest it was not bad before paint but has gone much worse now but a rot free replacement is not on every street corner. I will keep looking. These are a few of pics from one of the Curborough days. Last week I had a 175/60/13 tyre fitted to the XR2 steel that will be the spare just to see if the tyre size would be suitable and not cause rubbing which they don't and a set of 4 will be ordered. This should give me a slight increase in ground clearance along with a slightly better ride without taking away the looks. The slightly larger tyres may also help the speedo inaccuracy as when on the motorway at an indicated 70mph on the sat nav the speedo in the car suggests I am doing 90mph.

Looks good Did you fit the vehicle speed sensor in the box? Just screws inline with the Speedo cable If you haven’t that could be your cutting out issue as that’s what it’s for Holds the revs up slightly when coasting until the car is stopped

I don't remember fitting anything on the end of he speedo cable! The gearbox came out of a mk6 escort Si not the MTX75 that was fitted to the engine in the donor car. I will have to look at the car to refresh my memory.

Thanks for the link. I assume the plug that goes on that is part of the ecu loom? I have installed the whole ecu loom and didn't cut any of it off so the plug should be there?

I'm sure a few years back this lived in edmonton north london just off the m25 Back in 2007 when I first acquired it I fetched it from Staines. December 2014 I picked it up from the Hayes area but it was registered to an address by Wembley as it was at his parents house parked up with no MOT. This guy had owned for almost all the time since I had sold it apart from a few months as I had sold it to a different guy who quickly sold it for twice the price I had sold it for to the guy I brought it back from.

Great to see its being used hard as well! Tom Thank you. There are a lot of zetec engined base models about but alot of thrown together ones. I have hopefully done this so it lasts and is reliable.

Also enjoyed reading this. Did you ever get on the rolling road? No I never did get it on the rollers. I hope that will happen this year at some point when I can find the time. Need to get some tyres knocked on and have a look at this random cutting out problem. It does go well though in such a light car, better than the escort I did.

Just asking someone who has done it and not hear say. I clean under the arches when I wash the car and it still looks good but I am not using it much in comparison to a daily. I have used it years ago on daily minis I had and it does chip with constant abuse.

Aslong as it’s wired up to go then should be onto a winner I had a quick look at fiesta earlier and I do have a plug hanging about 6 inches above the speedo cable but it has 3 wires by the looks of it. Am I definitely looking for a plug with 2 wires?
