i like those Mk 1 Ibizas, they look GREAT and i'm sure all the ingredients are there for a cracking little hot hatch, they are just not quite there in standard form. The floorpan and suspension is pure Fiat Strada i understand, and when my girlfriend had a mint J-reg SXi one I used to dream of fitting Strada 130TC front suspension, Regata 100 power steering, and messing with the camshaft profile/flywheel weight to try and make it a little less asthmatic. Never actually got off my fat and did any of that mind you, too busy watching telly. Always did 40mpg though and had an 'unburstable' feel to it. definitely going to be a rare car soon.

Hello there. I remember seeing your Spit in Retro - an interesting mix of old and new. I quite fancied it but children / lack of garage / need to travel long distances in all weathers mean I have to be a bit more sensible these days. Welcome to the Board!

Thanks for the replies guys. Interesting a couple of ya picked out the Ibiza - twas a 1.2 GSX, J-reg in white and was a little beast! I didnt realise about the underpinnings of it - though i didnt get much time to do anything to it as it caught fire in a big way!! Ended up being a right off! I went through a triumph stage - i couldn't get enough. But retro cars has rightly opened my mind! Still regret sellin the Spitty big time.

We are both in the first year, and both David Brown and Ivan are still lecturing. (Although we don't get taught by them), how did you find the course? and what have you become because of it?

Hello,
Why thankyou, yep in the first year - good fun. As Matt says both are still here - I think we will see more of them in years 2 and 3.
Did you do a work pacement?? What are you doing now??

Both first years - is that still with Alan Birch? They changed so much of the course structure just after I finished, that I've lost track of it all!
I did the 4 year MDes, with half the third year on placement (at Fairline Boats in Oundle), with the final year dedicated entirely to the degree show / final project, which in my case was an 84' sailing yacht (the model was 1:18 scale - hull was 1.4 m long, and standing on it's keel, it was about 6'6" tall!!).
I very much enjoyed the course, and am now working for a yacht design consultancy in London. However, I should warn you that there are too many students studying this subject at Coventry alone, than there are jobs out there as car designers / stylists. Try and think tactically regarding projects and your portfolio.
Some of us are cut out for car studio work, others, like myself, aren't but can still find good jobs in other related fields of design. A lot comes down to the way you work - my design work tends to be much more practical and realistic - I'm too cynical to do the crazy, wacky WTF stuff, but in the area that I now work, everything I do is for live projects - very little is conceptual, if at all. I also prefer working as part of a much smaller team. In a car studio, it's the opposite.
Best of luck with everything guys - if you have any queries, or would like any advice, feel free to ask!

Ah interesting stuff - that yacht sounds interesting - large!!
I'm not entirely convinced I'm on the right course. I don't want to go into car design as such, as like you i don't like the thought of being a very small cog in a huge machine.
My perfect job would be designing and fabricating cars - maybe even motorbikes.
I wanted to do an apprenticeship doing much of what i just described but i was persuaded to get a degree first - (something to fall back on)
Do you think i can intergrate this into the course somehow??
Many Thanks for your reply
Keivor
