Have you checked for pinholes/porosity on the welds from the banding too? Yes, the welding is perfect, the leaks were all around the rims, now they've been cleaned and resealed properly they seem fine. Nothing wrong with MrSpeedy s handy work, he did a top job. 👍🏻  |

Not updated this pile of junk for a while so here goes.....  It’s been Sorned and garaged since October but I have been starting it every two weeks just to keep it happy, anyway I noticed I had a side light out so I tried to change the bulb and then this happened. No bother I thought, I have a spare unit.  Ok maybe not, more holes than your average Swiss cheese.... So there’s a nice guy on the Allegro FB group who has broken a couple recently so £25 later I got a decent second hand unit. Now the weather is better I’ve taxed the old lass and I can get round to fitting it.   May as well get the P38 out too and sort the holes in the wing out while I am at it.  Much swearing and head scratching later and after a bit of rattle can work it was job done, not the easiest of things to fit tbh, you need fingers like knitting needles to tighten the nuts up on the back. Any way I’ve checked the other side and yep it’s just as bad!! Looks like it’s going to be a busy couple of months and I’ve not even looked at the cracked exhaust manifold yet. 😳  |

just think , back in the 70' and 80's that was the ritual every weekend on any car more than 2 years old. pop down to halfrauds for a tin of bog and a can of rattle paint , add a bit of yesterday sun newspaper and bingo....good for another weeks motoring!! That’s how you cope with an Allegro, take it one week at a time. 😂 |

So the four branch manifold is now off the car and looks like it has been repaired several times in the past, it’s also got more holes than a Swiss cheese. These are pretty much extinct and the only one available to me is in the possession of the owners club, that too is damaged. The main issue with these four branch manifolds is apparently cracking from the vibration of the E series engine. Good old British Leyland. 😂   |

I priced up having a custom manifold made and it’s not going to be an option at prices like a thousand pounds, sure if it was a really desirable classic maybe, but it’s a tatty old Allegro so one option is to fit the Maxi manifold that I have for the 1750 engine stashed away in the garage, I can get a down pipe for around £30 from a guy in Derby, the down side of this being the car will have to be single carb with this set up but at least it will be back on the road.     Perfect fit bit not really what I want. The other option is to have the four branch repaired which is the route I am going down for now, a good mate is going to have a go at it, no guarantees that it will work though so fingers crossed. |

i have a bl special tuning kit for the 1500 e series, with the st 4 branch. it will eventually go on a hot e series in an ado16.i was told when i bought it 9 years ago it was the last kit in existance.

Might be able to get it brazed ?
That was the old fix for manifolds that cracked back in the day.
Just need to find an old school blacksmith.

Wow an Austin 1500?? 😎 Just been reading your thread. 👍 E Series parts are getting so difficult to find, I was lucky to get the spare 1750 Maxi engine when I did, it’s just a case of buying parts whenever they appear, which isn’t very often now. I have even considered buying a scrap Vanden Plas 1500 that’s sat in a breakers yard just for the engine. 😩 |

As you're in Derby, have you contacted PD Gough in Watnall ( link). Ask for Rich, tell him "Mike with the Meriva VXR" sent you and see what he does for you - you're the 3rd person I will have recommended so you never know. They are what I would call 'proper tubers' - it's no cleanroom setup, there's boobies on the wall and grease on the floors, but the workmanship really is excellent and the 'waiting area' has bags of Haynes manuals and catalogues from yester-year to keep you entertained. Alternatively, a guy I know from school (some 20 years ago) runs a custom build company. He fabs up a whole load of stuff, currently putting a K06 on a Colt and has previously turbo'd some N/A Honda stuff. Have a look at them here - might be worth a call. Hope you get it sorted. |

So the four branch manifold has eventually been welded by a mate of a mate so no nasty blowing noises anymore and we’ve got another 12 months MOT on the old knacker, the only real issue being the brakes binding due to lack of use, I really need to start using this more as pretty much the only trip out it gets is to The Gathering and back.  MK2 grille on just for a change, just needs a good clean now. 👍 |

Yeah it’s definitely an option for the future strikey as it’s only gonna take so much patching, the owners club have a four branch but again it’s not in great shape, might be better with the 1300 A series back in it like it had originally 😂 |

I didn’t in the end mikeyp247 as it got sorted locally to where the car was, took bloody ages unfortunately but at least it’s sorted in time for the Gathering. I’d like to get to Hinckley but not checked my shifts yet.  Looks a pretty good job too.  And check out those fire breathing SUs now running at there full potential. 🤣🤣 |
