About time I did a build thread on this, some of you will hate it as it's not a patch on some of the fantastic stuff on RR, also the cardie wearing purist Allegro Owners Club will definitely disapprove but I will chuck it up here anyway. So here is my '74 Allegro Mk1 Ex Banger Rally car, I have always had a soft spot for the automotive potato and when I was offered a Mk1 complete with quartic wheel I thought why the hell not. This is how I first saw it- Abandoned on a mates drive with its 1300cc A series heart removed and fitted in a stock car. So how could I leave it there looking so..... Round? Colourful? Anyway I thought I'd take a punt. The rear valance had taken a battering thanks to a pallet truck And the obvious problem! The interior ( never even had a radio fitted!!!!!! ). But two odd front seats and no rear seat at all! ( nice blue door cards though ) Still I have a VDP interior the will go in nicely complete with picnic tables! It's got a speedo, a temperature gauge and a fuel gauge though ( and this was a Deluxe!!!! ). VDP boot lid looks ok Hmmmmmm I still like the colour scheme although it was Harvest Gold originally. I gave it back it's eyes! And the original Mk1 1300 Grille and a green bonnet for no particular reason. Now this has turned up! All 1750cc of it. And this to bolt on too! So that's where we are up to now, I just need to free off all four seized brakes, get the rear valance sorted and the hole in the sill ( the body was Ziebarted so it's fairly good ). Then I need to get a Manifold and another SU carb plus butterfly linkage for the twins, get an alternator and wire up the electrics, get an engine crane to fit the damn thing! Oh yes two new drive shafts with CV boots and some sort of custom exhaust ( with a Cherry Bomb on of course ) plus a load of other jobs I've forgotten and it should be ready to move under its own power with the CROWNing glory of the square wheel finally fitted. So wish me luck, Who knows how far I will get with it? What will be under those miss matched seat? Will it keep it's USAF logos? Who knows? Not even me at this stage! It may even get back on the road one day! Tune in for the next instalment of " Project Flying Spud ".

Thanks 79cord, the long term goal is to put it back into Harvest Gold and probably go for a brown vinyl roof, I have always liked the idea of a quick Allegro but unfortunately SS and HLS models are all but extinct as are Equipes. Although I like the idea of rocking it how it is with a set of white walls on red wheels!

Progress on mission improbable, well not much tbh The E series hasn't moved far but I have had chance to clean it up a bit Had chance to clean a carb up too. Still one short of a twin though. And a nice clean yellow leyland fan! Hopefully when the body is sorted I can get the engine in but in the meantime I am on the lookout for an E Series 1750 Manifold and a pair of Maxi drive shafts if anyone out there can help.

Good luck with the All-Aggro. I built an estate a few years ago running a 1750, with early M.G Maestro head & twin downdraft Webers. I also fitted 16" rims from a Rover 800 as the P.C.D is the same. It went like stink, but handled like a fruit 'n veg stall! I was gonna fit coilovers, but sold it instead.

I wish that I did have, but I'm curse word at taking photos. The guy that I sold it to fiddled with the wiring & managed to set fire to the dashboard (apparently?), resulting in the interior getting burnt out, I only know this as a friend who's into Maxis bought the engine (which survived unscathed)& recognised my handiwork.

Any updates on this? Your Allegro doesn't use that yellow fan BTW, only the Maxi does.

I haven't got any further unfortunately, the car is still over at a mates place with a sheet over it and the lump is still sat in my garage, trying to keep my SuperMinx happy along with pleasing the missus and kids and working stupid hours are getting in the way at the mo but I do intend to see this one through. Are you the guy who had the Equipe?

Back in the day the missus and I bought an Allegro in Harvest Gold - well if you're a student in Oxford they were the local Escort really. All went well until 6 months later some plonker jumped a red light and took the front end off it. By then we were back in Liverpool so we did buy a Ford - big mistake.
Good save if you can get it back on the road.

I haven't (to my shame) been anywhere near the Allegro since May so I thought today with it being my last day off until I'm back on shift tomorrow I would pay it a visit. I was a little shocked when I saw it as its rapidly disappearing under mounds of junk! I cleared the bulk of the rubbish out of the way and managed to get in the car but it's rapidly getting boxed in as my mate gets busier and busier with work so- I have made the decision after much begging and pleading with the wife to get the car home, this way I can actually work on getting it roadworthy again. The downside to this is that it will have to sit on the drive which will NOT be a permanent thing. So it looks like the Super Minx may be heading for the exit which is a shame but needs must. I only have space to garage one car and it has to be the square steeringwheeled automotive Potato! I've always loved them God knows why! Must be a "Child of the Seventies' thing! Fighting through the bin bags to get near my beloved Spud. Typical '70s Leyland basic dash, Speedo, Temp gauge, Fuel gauge, what else do you need? edk83 I am blaming you for this sudden surge of inspiration.

Yup that's right, the square wheel is safely tucked away in my loft at home, I didn't want it going walkies whilst the car was laid up. I do believe that's a Marina wheel on at the mo.
