Hey look at the reg plates on this Cortina. There's a special name for them, its Serck something. I reckon they are quality, any family clunker on an X or Y plate is crying out for them. Anyone know if you can still get 'em from any of those specialist numberplate suppliers? I'd love a set on my Talbot!!!!

I was just about to post the EXACT SAME thing! Only I didn't know what they are called... They're pressed metal aren't they? I don't think I've ever seen a front one that's not mangled in some way ;D

They are pressed aluminium. Pressed plates are great, much better than perspex ones, much more robust for 'when you are driving through long reshes and that' to quote a friend of mine!!!!
That was obviously a key requirement of his mini, which suffered a spate of cracked plastic jobs.

Hmmm. Not sure if you can (a) still get them and (b) if you'd be permitted to fit them if your car doesn't have them already. The DVLA rules on numberplates are now quite extensive and VERY confusing. I'll have a chat with my Dad (resident numberplate guru). He's bound to know if they're still permissable. Although he doesn't make them like this, only modern types and the occasional black / silver aluminium and attached lettering jobbies.

I'm sure it'd be technically illegal to get a set and stick them on. But, its equally illegal to use those grotesque numberplates with silly fancy swoopy characters, but folk do it anyway.
I'm sure the rozzers would not pay any attention to a pair of these plates on an old 80's clunker as they don't attract attention or mark you out as a clever curse word, they just look cool.
Someone somewhere must have a set of tools for pressing them!!!!

Don't know if there the same type, but currently fitted to my amazon are a set of very cheap & nasty metal plates. Black letters (some kind of sticker, sandwiched under an outer layer?), with yellow & white background (although so old that yellow is more light brown / orange, and white is now cream....). As for the MOT, the front plate was looking so manky last time, that it required touching up the letters with black paint ;D The nice thing though is that they don't crack like the modern plastic plates, and are easy to repair (see above), especially given the difficulty & hassle in legally aquiring a set of new number plates.

I want a front one of those for my Discovery... as plastic ones tend to suffer a lot when Off Road.....
;D
I'm sure i've seen people selling them 'for show use' at the Land Rover show at Billing....

I think that now, if you want new plates they have to be thise curse word modern type-face ones, which look atrocious on anything with any pedigree. You can still get black and silver ones but only for pre-'73 cars. Mine has black and silver plates that I made myself from letters I prised off old cars and painted up! The coppers have never bothered me about it... or the MoT. There could be someone with the tooling to press you a set but I think the DVLA came down pretty firmly on the old plate-making gear to stop the crims making fake plates

You don't have to have the new typeface, but it must be one that conforms to certain legibility standards. If you don't ask for anything different, that's what you'll get though!
That said, I agree that PC Plod has bigger fish to fry than arguing the toss with us about plates. He's too busy hassling charver pillocks, who've fitted illegible italiced plates on their Corsa's.
Having said this, what's the chances I get busted tomorrow for having "honeycomb" types ones....?

Don't be silly, the police and the DVLA love nothing more than being b*stards to people with old cars, they only care about people they can tax to death.

Look, this guy does all kinds of plates including pressed aluminium ones (although his pressed ally reflective ones have some kind of 'fat gut' roundy feature on the bottom) www.pl8s.co.uk/page3.htmlDunno if he does ones like on the cortina with the funny digits but I have asked.

I wonder how he gets around the documentation issue. Someone making plates is now required to ask for and be shown some kind of documentation relating to the car to prevent cloning and general criminal naughtiness.
It can be done via the e-ether via a slightly interesting loophole (as worked out when I was doing a bit of research for Marina_Coupe!). I wonder if he uses this, or is just a bit dodgy...

I understand that the legislation about taking your passport, gas bills, logbook, mum/dad, house deeds, hunting knife etc when you want to buy a new front numberplate from the spark plug shop, does not apply in scotland. Is that right or have I made it up?
