Let it go 'Scrotes are like the Mini or VW scene imho - so stereotypical that everyone wants one, so they end up not being as special or unique without a major investment of time / skill / money etc. As for feeding the 'classic' side of you, there's naughty Madame La Minx waving at you from your driveway ;D You'll just end up lusting after a better / faster etc 'Scrote, & either sell it on again soon (& thern regret what you had to sell to buy it in the first place), or be constantly skint (& therefore miserable) because of the money you end up spending on parts & goodies.... Also, as a final thought - doesn't SWMBO rather like the Minx too? Is she as keen on 'Scrotes, or will she be grumpy that you replaced it with something that she doesn't like?

So what is my point here? I don't know. I seem to be considering selling one great car to buy another (maybe great, maybe not, but guaranteed to rot alot quicker!) because I 'need' the approval of others over my own personal satisfaction? That's a bit silly really isn't it? Nail. Head. Don't buy it. Think of all the tat you could buy for that money! OK, if you had £3.5k stashed away to splurge on a car, it wouldn't be that bad. But getting a loan / selling your BM for it is a bit crazy IMO. Particularly seeing as you drive the BMW because you like it, but would be driving the Escort because others might approve.

What would Alvin say? (sorry I got him out again ;D ) People are mentioning how overpriced these cars are and how obvious they are, but its what you want isn't it, and you are not the most obvious person or a fashion victim or owt so it would be cool if you got one but I am curious, whey do you want one? why not apply the vibe to summat else, like that orange Avenger? I have a feeling you HAVE considered alternatives, only to revert back to your actual WANT of a MK1 Escy. I still have a vision of what mine (escy mk1 or 2) would be like if I did one. I was dead keen to do a klean white rally prepped-ish fast road blaster, much of this cannot really be applied to the Sierra IMO. Have a quick think how money could be applied to the BM, I cant help feeling that that is actually the better car if made your own.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

When I saw Alfadogs GT/R replica for sale in Australia I HAD to have it! In the end my bid was slightly short and it headed to the UAE instead, but had I gone for it, It would probably have been on my drive by now and ALL my savings and projects would have gone. Did I do the right thing? I don't know! but I still have the dream which is something to work hard for plus I get to fly out to Japan in a couple of weeks which I wouldn't have been able to afford as well

I wouldn't do it. firstly cos its only a Ford Escort - sorry escort fans but they're not worth that sort of money. secondly, you should NEVER buy your dream car. In your dreams its perfect, in reality it will breakdown, squeak, bump and bang like any other old car, therefore shattering your dream. Leading to disappointment. Then you will see another 'must have' car so will sell the escort quickly and at a loss to get your next dream, just to be disappointed again. I know, i've done it at least 20 times now.

1 would you be able to buy another escort like this one you want again?
2 would you be able to buy another iS if you sold this one easily
3 as with vw isnt there a scene tax element to the price you would pay for the escort?
4 will you get bored if you buy it and be able to splurge more money on it if you wanted to?
5 does the boss aprrove?
6 will it cover the way you drive from work and back?
7 what if you buy it and you realise its a disappointment?
8 will you pay what you say it up for then possibly find out 6 months down the line that it needs the same again spending on it?
9 if you buy it, we want full pics and video and story and everything
10 what else can he buy for the budget people?

don't do it.
Think of old Jezza and his Ford GT... his dream car and a lot of money and it went wrong, over and over. You could see how gutted he was when he gave it back. That could so easily be you.

So the people say 'NO' then ;D
OK, I value your opinions. I think you are all right - what with the 'scene tax' it's probably not such a smart move. There's still a part of me that wishes I'd bought something like this 10 years ago before they went bonkers.
Maybe that's just what I -have-done. When good sporting E30's are £10,000 again you can all come round and say 'we told you so'. ;D

Don't. I 'met' my hero and it was a total no-go. Well, wasn't a good example either which probably didn't help, but spending 3 grand I'd scraped together seemed a REALLY BAD IDEA considering what else I could do with it I sat in it and thought "curse word to this". When I've got a bit more disposable income, sure, maybe I'd consider buying it as long as I was fully aware of what I was getting into and had the time/space for it

If you buy the Escort then in 6 years time when its going a bit tatty and needs some work you'll be saying 'I wish I hadn't sold that Beemer, could have made £**** on that!'

dunno, my dream cars tend to cost me nowt lol.
in saying that, when i was 18 my first estelle sent me seriously close to bankruptcy. it didnt disappoint and despite £4k spent later i still love it.
but disposable income is a must. is it SL or ratdat who has in their sig or have written somewhere "buy when you can, not when you have to" !!
if you DO decide to part with the bm, a bad choice but yours nonetheless, PM me, i'll pass you a couple of irish forums and you can cover the escort price pretty easily lol

I've got to agree with everyone else I'm afraid and say don't do it. You could have lots more fun with several cars totalling £3.5k and I just don't think an Escort would provide the thrill. You'd be scared to use it properly because of the money sunk in to it. Besides if you spent all you money and several body parts on one car we'd all lose out on a load of amusement pondering what you're going to do with the latest bit of tat bought for £2.54

I've just had to let a gorgeous Wedge go. A Princess 2200HLS in stunning light metallic gold. I'm really, really gutted but the sums just wouldn't work in my favour.
So I bought a shyte looking Honda instead. I'll bide my time. There are loads of mk1 Escorts still out there so chill! One day it'll happen.

OK, so I didn't read the whole thread, only the first page. However, the scene tax for the MkI Scrotum over here isn't anywhere near as bad as there, with your eye spy rural eyes on, you can still pick them up for sub $1000NZD, that's only about three hundred quid guvnah! Obviously they're not everywhere at that price but they still aren't too bad. Even with shipping over to the UK sorted it'd still be cheaper than one over there by the sounds of it.
Just something to keep in mind.
