OK.
Here's how it goes down. I have just been offered my personal HOLY GRAIL of retro motoring.
It's old. It's brown. It has ZERO rust It's tax exempt And it's pretty quick. It has the magic letters M, K & 1 in it....
Problem is I R skint, cashflow wise. Actually I R just skint.
If I let this one go I will kick myself forevAr. Any bright ideas, short of bank robbery that can secure this dream ticket? I'll forsake all other machines to own this. Seriously, I have it that bad.
Why, why must perfection be offered to me when I R skint!

Loan = bad. I am not the most indebted person, but I have a terrible track record for paying sh1t on time. Plus I refuse to buy cars 'on tick' Anyone want a fresh euro-look BMW / '60's Hillman Superminx / All the old CC / SM mags they can eat / mountain bike.... or even 2 small children.....

I got an email offering me 20% of US$10million just for helping the daughter of an ex-politician in Nigeria that had been squirreling money away for years. If you want I can forward the details and you can have all 20%

Go round your posessions being realistic about what they're worth, then get a bank loan for the new car, then photograph the possessions that you valued and put them on Ebay. Once sold, pay the bank loan off early.
That's how I have swapped 5,000 records, a Datsun and a Nissan 200SX for a Sierra Cosworth touring car, trailer, seat, helmet, race fees, licence fees, etc.
What is the car you want to buy? Pics?

At a bit of a tangent, but is a MK1 (I'm assuming Escort here) really your holy grail? I bought my pro-street Herald under similar impressions, but it wasn't really what I wanted. I don't really know about the car you want so desperately, but I do know that if it's not an estate then you'll soon wish it was and if you were to sell the BMW then you'd have just changed from wanting a Mk1 Escort to wanting another E30 because you 'should never have sold my old is'. I can't help thinking how much cooler and how much better the money could be spent as well...£3.5k could buy a serious amount of kit to get that 'Minx sorted, and you'd have more than just another Escort...not only that, you don't need the money all in on go. My solution? Unless there's massive profit in it, wait for a time when your finances match your desires better.

Maybe you are right, Simon. If I sell the BMW I will kick myself for forever and a day. It is pretty cool, does everything very competently, excites folk on here. I suppose the problem I have with the BMW is that alot of 'normal' folk just don't get it. I was discussing this with my neighbour the other weekend... he's an 'old school' classics guy, likes his zodiacs & yank barges... to him it's just a 'normal' car and there's little differentiation between mine and a £150 eBay grotter 316. Whereas a Mk1 Escort, well everyone 'gets it'. And this particular example has all the right bits to make it a BMW substitute, but in a subtle way - no lairy mex stripes etc. I think if the price of Mk1 escorts gets any more stupid, there won't be many more 'opportunities' like this, and the whole idea will have to be filed under 'broken dreams' along with VW Buses and a nice house in the country. So what is my point here? I don't know. I seem to be considering selling one great car to buy another (maybe great, maybe not, but guaranteed to rot alot quicker!) because I 'need' the approval of others over my own personal satisfaction? That's a bit silly really isn't it? Here's the offending article

I'm careful about saying anything's my holy grail since last May when I got one of those "OMG must have it" cars, then ended up selling at a loss eight months later, due to another grail-wagon eating up my time and cash! Sounds like selling up's the only viable option. Go round your posessions being realistic about what they're worth, then get a bank loan for the new car, then photograph the possessions that you valued and put them on Ebay. Make extra cash by adding "DRIFT TYPE R NOT EVO IMPREZA WIKKID BRUV INNIT" in all the descriptions for that proper "desperation" vibe.

or remortgage - it wont feel like a loan then. plus you can buy some toys for it too ;D
with your track record mate i can't help but think it will be back up on the bay in 6 weeks time after your next 'dream' car comes along .... is this car REALLY different to the rest?

Go round your posessions being realistic... That's how I have swapped 5,000 records, for a pile of cool car stuffs Charlie I like this idea, I have a lot of tat/stock, most of it is worth pennies though. Have we seen your cossie? anyway, Pog, I totally get where you are coming from, your quite happy with your newer skool retro car, and a few old projects, then BANG! something that resembles a dream car turns up finished and everythink! needing no immeidaide weekends graft or any more bits for it! WINzorz! but hold on its a lot of bucks, you gotta get it round the boss, and Is it spot on for your needs? do you have to have it? how much will you miss the fleet/BM and are they replaceable just incase? and do you really hanker (right word?) an estate like rmad says? Oh and are you sure theres no plod in it? no bodge fixes? I'd go have a drive and a good good sniff round weigh it up and sleep on it. I know that 'broken dreams' Smell!

Most of the sunday broadsheets were commenting on the likelyhood of us seeing 7.5% interest rates within 18 months to 2 years. Blame "Doveish" elements Gordon Brown has been packing the monetary policy group at the Banl ofg England with who have been suppoorting his spending policies for the last couple of years, ill-advised cutting the base rate when the money supply level is still in double digits...
A lot of people who have 99% of their life on credit will go horribly bust. A rasie to 7.5% is effectiley a rise of 50% of the interest component of a variable rate mortgage... The price bubble for luxury items like artificially priced Mk1 Escorts VW busses etc will fall.
Remember back when the last big boom was running and you could get £100K for a E type, at least £2K for a nothing-special Morris Minor, etc etc and that all crashed out big style.
the Sub-prime moprtgage market in the US is about to fold, the henous Barrat Jackson prices on early Muscle cars are already starting to fall back...
I wouldn't remortgage unless it was to take a fixed rate over 5 years or so, (just did that in fact) or to increase equity personally. I certainly wouldn't be increasing my debt burden eitrher secured or otherwise.
I think another economic slow down or even slump is on the way and classic car values always head south at times like these...

I don't know if i could ever get £3.5k worth of joy out of an old car, specially an escort. £100 here and there is great but £3.5k? Thats half a house deposit, or 2-month trip to China, or a new workshop built at home, or a big pile of serious workshop gear, a load of track-based driving tuition or lord knows what else. Car wise it would probably just about buy a bike-engined blaster thing which has got to be the best value for pure driving enjoyment.
Saying that if you spend £3.5k on an escort as long as you don't tw@t it up you'll probably always get your money back again which you wouldn't with most of those suggestions.
