I'd like to swap a modern manual gearbox in place of the BW 35 in my Minx. I'll be keeping the Rootes engine. Originally I was considering a Toyota 5speed out of an older celica or supra, but then I began to notice Honda S2000 gearboxes popping up on eBay. The S2000 box is a 6 speed, and as the engine is slanted over about 10 degrees, just like my Minx, I suspect it could probably be adapted relatively easily.
Then I remembered a potential problem. I know that late Honda FWD engines rotate in the opposite direction from most the engines of most other manufacturer. Is this the case with the S2000? I'd hate to go to all that trouble and have six reverse gears!

I think it will be ok... The FWD units also sit with their gearbox on the right, which is why they must spin backwards.. The S2000 is a front engine rwd usual layout so should spin clockwise as usual (looking from flywheel) and anyway, if you only use the gearbox, and not the diff, it will rotate the way your engine and axle want to.

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

Gee, you're right. I feel really stupid now.

It can still rotate the other way - the CROWNwheel can be on the opposite side of the diff. As for the box, surely if it's normally mated to an engine that turns the other way, you would then just end up with one forward gear & lots of reverse gears?
