Right. One of the lads I work with is contemplating an old Merc SL as his next car. I think this is a fantastic idea. So lets have some pics so he can be persuaded! ;D I'll start the ball rolling: GO!

W107 chassis code covers the R107 SL & C107 SLC though doesn't it?

(quote) The Mercedes-Benz C107 coupe was built from 1973 to 1981 and was always badged as the 'SLC
(Like R107, under the skin the SLC was a W114 with a larger engine, and styling cues from the contemporary S-Class(quote)

front suspension is the same as w114/w115, but with bigger, vented brakes nailed on. i think the rear is the same too also with bigger brakes, so id imagine most of the rest of the running gear is pretty similar or the same. isnt the motor the 280, and them the 4.5 in the v8 models?

I wonder if there will ever come a time when someone mentions one of those Mercs and my first thought ISN'T of "Hart to Hart" and "when they met it was MOIDER!" ;D

Always liked these, they never seemed to suffer from a real banger stage image problem really. Maybe that's why they still fetch good money. SLC

These are definitely one to watch. Pagoda values have shot up recently. Not sure these will ever have the same appeal but they will appeciate in value. But then, they made them for bloody years!!

I remember the father of someone I was at my first school with (so about been '91 / '92) having what I now assume was a very early one of these restored. BTW, wasn't this shape only replaced in '89 / 90?

The only 'old' car SWMBO would even consider.....I've tried to talk her into it several times to the extent that we've even looked at a few but she's not quite there yet. I've explained to her that what she loses in increased fuel and maintainence costs she will gain by virtue of it not depreciating (in fact prices are starting to increase for unmolested examples).

I'd say that looking at one of these as a 'project' is probably a short step from a world of pain and financial ruin. Grot ones seem to be about £2k. Nice ones (that you can use) hover around £7k Classic & Sportscar classifieds are always packed with glossy ones at £14k or similarly silly prices from 'prestige' traders.
