Hi JP, regarding your front corners mate, do you still have the front doors off the spare? I´d be tempted to cut off the last 6 inches off the doors and weld them into the corners, the shape is right and all the swage lines would match up too. Keep up the good work, Dave Hi, Dave...thought of that too late...and only one door came with the donor car, so I think I will challenge myself and and attempt to fabricate the body lines from sheet steel. My challenge is getting those corners to morph and flow nicely and tastefully into the front panel. I'm also thinking of adding "wings" to the rocker boxes, arcing them around the front to hint at mimicking the front lower portion of the wagon's front bumper cover....(I do have a spare E9x bumper cover)....but I have to be careful...don't want to overdo it!...should I mock it up in cardboard first? thanks! JP

To add to the above comment...watching how you approach your builds, Dave, and having many spares around, I am learning that you can use adjacent panel features and body lines to help create or continue the "flow" when needed. I now realize that I could have used the entire door skin (as it had that body line running all the way through it!)....
learning!...learning.....

JP I´m a great believer in using up what i can find lying around, to be fair though i had a rough idea how i was going to build my trailer and have been collecting the parts for a while. Would it not be worth popping down to the local scrapyard to pick up a few panels? - they shouldn´t be expensive as it doesn´t really matter what condition they are in. Dave

I'm thinking of re-doing the tonneau cover this spring. An idea came about at work while designing an awing for a storefront in town.....They make all kinds of aluminum extrusions with several profiles available. I could make exactly what I was envisioning, with a wealth of fabrics and fabric colors available...they even make radius bent sections for the aluminum.
question is, what color should I make the cover?
any ideas?
I'm thinking Black or dark grey...It could even be maroon...but I'm not sure how it would look against the BMW "barrique" paint...I think whatever color I choose for the fabric, it needs to look like it was done "on purpose"...If I go with maroon fabric, and it does not match...well, that might not be ideal!

... I'm thinking Black or dark grey... And I´m agreeing. It certainly seems the safest choice....dare I go with the interior camel color? JP

I was talking with a buddy of mine who runs a sign and awning shop and we are going to re-do the tonneau cover this spring with a nice taught cover made from an aluminum extrusion frame with a custom bowed rear section so its all one tidy structure. Ill be keeping the bows to give it support and shape. The fabric will be similar to a regular soft top, like a convertible top, but be a bit stronger.
I'm designing and figuring out the geometry for one or two linear actuators to raise and lower the top....I could also use gas struts, but the actuators are much more fun!
anybody ever work with them before?...there is a crazy formula for figuring out what you need..but I think I have it right...Where I'm thinking of attaching the actuators to the top will require about 50lbs of force...and need roughly 8" of travel to open the top 90 degrees. I may add limit switches so I don't tweak the top. having the actuators and one latch at the back under the curved part of the cover will secure it nicely. I can even add a safety switch so the actuators will not function unless I remember to unlock the rear latch!....(which, knowing me, I would do at least once...more worrisome is if my kids try to show it off to their friends one day, they WILL forget!)
The actuators will also keep the top from flying away when its open and a gust of wind gets under it...same with the pistons, I suppose.
any ideas are very welcome!
great looking stuff on this forum lately!

UPDATE! So its finally time for an update...I have not had any time at all to work on the trailer as we are building a garage next to the house and it eats up huge amounts of time...plus, I have nowhere to work now!....But I did manage to get a few things done as we are headed up to NH again for our annual pilgrimage...I remounted the mountain bike rack so it now is U-bolted to the trailer frame...I had it on the roof last year and didnt stop worrying about it the whole way up....plus, its a hassle to get the bike up there, get it secure and not scratch anything...Now, its right near the ground, mounts quickly and will be out of the majority of the wind, ect... Heres the front fork mount...(Ill be getting a lockable one for the trip)... and I did manage to start cutting the carpeting to rough shape...but even that looks much better than the bare floor.... I hope to get more body work done in the next couple of weeks and smooth things out for final primer.... thanks for looking JP

Certainly seems good, notice you haven't done the front corners yet though. Have you had any further thoughts of what you are going to do for them? Also the front mounted bike rack seems a good idea, means no roof bars to mess around with either

Front corners are going to be a bit tricky as I want them to be pleasing to look at....I will be wrapping them around and sculpting them so they "fit" in with the rest of the body work. I think I will be using foam to shape them, then either shaping metal, or using fiberglass to finish them off.
I had better get going with the foam, eh?
The mountain bike carrier saves my back from trying to get the thing on the roof of the car and not scratching anything up there, ect....it pops right on and off now easily with the release of the front fork mount....Its not the most attractive thing in the world, but works great!

I've got a bike rack. It fits on my tow bar in a way that allows me to still tow a trailer/caravan and tilt it away if I need to get something out of my boot. Then I just detach it for the rest of the time I'm not using my MTB.
Most of those roof-mounted ones I see are on cars that are worth less than the road bikes they are carrying.

Here is another angle from above...all the hatches are open as we were packing up for NH at the time. The trailer did quite well on the trip...the mountain bike stayed in place and all bolts were tight....I would call it a success! JP

Hey, gang... finally started on the front corners of the trailer. I decided to go with a foam shape and fiberglass outer shell. I used expandable foam from the DIY store, cut out some cardboard panels to retain the gooey stuff while it cures, and taped it all together. One can was enough to do both sides. Its an experiment all the way, so I invite your suggestions and comments! here are a few shots..... Thanks for looking....all the projects on this site are looking great! JP

Bloody handy wee trailer that! Whats the plan for the corners?? Shape it and fiberglass over, then remove the foam?

Hi, I like your bike rack idea, I treated myself to a new Cannondale mtb, at the end of last year, I'm to worried to put it on a rack at the moment, so the wheels come off and it goes in my boot (trunk)
But I like your idea, I do have a trailer. Hmmmm cogs turning.
