Hello people. I haven't been back to this forum for some time as I temporally left the scene to sort other things in my life out. However Ive returned with something unusual and full of character to bring back to life. The story. Ive been with my girlfriend for almost 14 months now and I visited her family in Surrey back in the summer this year. It was a 70th birthday visit of one of her aunties. I was sat in the living room of the family house while members endeavored to grill me and ask me questions about myself and my interests. My girlfriend mentioned to her auntie that I was a classic old car fan and loved going to the shows and taking part etc, her ears perked up and said to my GF, "oh he might be interested in what Ive got in the garage then". I naturally overheard this and within 30 secs I found myself in the garage getting personal with this Talbot Samba. Shes a 0.9cc engine LE spec which is a base model Samba. The clock showed 51000 miles and by now I was very curious and started asking questions. My girlfriends auntie told me she garaged the car approximately 21 years ago because she hated it due to her x boyfriend forcing her to part with a Morris Minor in favor of the Samba. I suppose in those days nobody wanted the thing anyway and I would of kept the Morris too. I gave the car a full body inspection and discovered there was very little rot underneath and the engine turns over with a spanner. At this point as far as I'm concerned the car is mine so I went to work. I didn't have to work hard as she basically said "take I don't want it, it'll close long opened book for me and the garage will be available". I was like school boy in a sweet shop. So 4 months later armed with a flatbed, tools, two friends (one being Scott Andrews, uncle silvia on this forum, pictured below haha), a pot of coffee, a massive box of chocolates and a thank you card, we returned to collect the car, the photos say the rest. This was an all but dry stored car which really has saved it in my opinion and I'm glad I came along to save it. She is not everyone's cup of tea but for me is love at first site and plenty of potential. I'm hoping to get her ready for RR 2014 all being well, but a large list is already forming so wish me luck. If anyone on here knows these cars well and has a good spider web of contacts and knowledge please get in touch as ill need help on parts and researching wheels fitment and modification to bodywork and ill need the larger engine from the soft tops or the rare ralle model.

Would you like a copy of the Peugeot group 'B' brochure I have? Lists all sorts of goodies from when they had group B 1300 Sambas as tarmac rally cars in France in the 80s. All of it pretty much NLA.
I have happy memories of a Samba as my first car. HGS164Y a Samba 'S' with the 79bhp 1360 engine and five speed box. Not that much power but no weight to speak of either so would keep up with XR2s & MG Metros without difficulty.
And yes I had to fix it lots....

I would love any information you can give me. That'll be an interesting read I'm sure. I never knew Talbot made an S I was only aware of the soft tops and the rare rally unit. But because these engines are proper old skool I'm thinking a port and polish head and perhaps Webber twin setup hehe. Pm me and we can sort out the brochure stuff Thanks again Andy

Yep - complete with 5 Spoke alloys. There was also an even rarer GLS model with electric front windows. The 'S' also had twin single choke solex carbs, a rear a/r bar and front disks / pads from a Peugeot 305 Estate. The dif ratio was lower too so 80 was 4300rpm. A relaxed tourer it was not. Yes I know it was rusty - it was my first car what do you expect. Pretty much all the oily bits were shared with the Peugeot 104 and Citroen LNA. The Visa and early 205s (up to 1987) shared the same engine as did the 1.4 Citroen BX and (I think) the Renault 14. A single 40 DCOE can be fitted but not a twin as it's a 6 port head with Siamesed inlets. I'll pm you.

This is very very cool I never knew they made these until now, I must read up on all the models they did and specs. What a fantastic first car !

I had one of these as my first car that had been in the family from new. I brought a mini before I passed my test so never used the samba. I think mine was an LS and I scoured scrap yards for ages to find some headrests. Yours is positively luxurious with those filled in ones.

This is ultra cool, what a great find!!!
What are your plans for the little gem?!
I think the first thing to do is give it a thorough valet and show us some pictures of it looking all spangly and fresh!
Seeing as engines were shared with early 205's would it be possible to squeeze a 205 GTi engine under the bonnet...?! Just a thought...!!!

Possible but difficult. The engine bay is really cramped and designed around the gears in the sump engine. The XU with the gearbox on the end is longer.
That said 120bhp is quite do-able from the 1.4 and at 750-800kg that's plenty.

Oh, I see...!!!
Bunging the 1.4 motor in there would make this one little pocket rocket though so that'd definitely be the thing to do in my eyes! Having said that, I always just thing of the easy option!!!
I can't wait to see how this little projrct progresses, these little motors have just so much character...

Nice find, I was following this over on Facebook as Jon and Scott are on my FB friends list and it kept popping up on my wall!, there's a few chaps over on the autoshite forum who have these who might be able to help with parts and advise.
Good luck with the project.

Mate had one about 20 years back - he slammed it to the ground and rebadged it as a 'Mamba'. Proper cool little thing and even then it was reasonably rare. Great find

Hey guys thanks so much for such a positive response to this beauty, its going to be a very interesting project for me and I'm looking forward to working on her, Ive already ordered parts online ha ha. Scott and i will be attacking it when the weather improves. In response to some of the comments above about engines, i think I'm going to keep it as simple as i can and go for the same engine type and source the 1300cc unit which will drop straight in. My fueling idea is a large Weber and manifold conversion. I heard you can get the engine to over 90 BHP if tuned correctly. Maybe a port and polish on the head and exhaust manifold work plus a bigger bore system, but not going to go mental on it.
Looks wise i will lower it naturally, and find some really cool deep dish period wheels for her. Research is required here because i wouldn't mind finding a full suspension system that ll fit. The arches are most certainly going to have to be rolled to allow the wheels to fit. But first things first i need to find some wore tires to put on her for now so i can move the car about the place and start work on the brakes and get the little 0.9cc engine running at least. A full fluid change is in order and service as i don't think ill be fitting a bigger engine right away, a massive list is forming in my head as I'm typing this !! Wish me luck guys and ill keep everyone posted on progress with photos and descriptions

Quick question, does anyone know the tire sizes for the samba as the I'm away from the car right now, heard they were 145/70/13?

It's ok I've found out now, and the wheel fitment is 3 x 115, not 100 as I thought originally, i measured it wrong. Also would anybody know if unleaded fuel is ok for the engines in these ?
Thanks again
