so, i need a rear axle for a project. id usually go for a ford 9" cos i know em and they're good. thing is they're getting pricey these days. £200 for a bad ratio with brakes that need a service
ive been hearing good things about volvo rear axles. are they up to the hype? i hear they're similar/the same as a mopar axle? i like the fact they come with discs, this project necessitates em. i hear the bolt pattern is 5x4-1/4" (5x108mm), correct? and what volvo should i be looking for as a donor?
oh, and what bolt pattern are jensen interceptor axles, mopar 5x4"? or later mopar 5x4.5"?
or, is they're any strong and cheap live axle in 5x112mm? nah, thought not !!

Rightho
Volvo axlesa re goodness. However only the early ones (Amazon and early P1800) come in 5x4.5" Mopar style pattern. 144 and later axles are some weird metric size PCD, I don't recall what, but nothing seems to fit it except Volvo wheels. The best axles to nab are from the 240/260 series or the 760. Look for turbo ones as they usually have LSD. Estates usually also have a lower ratio gearset.
Theres little choice in ratios and slippers other than the OE stuff.
They will take smallblock power no problem.
Jensen Interceptor axles will take almighty abuse. Moose Hollingworth ran one under hs Cortina with a BBF 460 and nitrous and it lived. Limited choice of ratios and lockers though, again little or nothing in the aftermarket, but try a Jensen specialist or Duncan Watts. PCD is 5x5"
9" Ford is still the best bet for serious use, just so many options in the aftermarket to build it right. Gearsets are cheap and every ratio you can imagine is available from 2.crazy to 6.madness....

I ll sell you a heavy duty Cortina axle from a 2.3 auto with 9 inch drums for 70 quid, not 200

he means the 9" axle, as fitted to the big block Mustang, Ford Gran Torino etc.
Lewis, I didn't know for sure if the Jensen used the 4HA diff.
Same as in the Scimitar but with different halfshafts.
You can use Jag diffs / CROWN & pinion in there from the older Jags at least.

Amazon axles - 5 x 4.5' (114.3mm) pcd with drums but I've heard that the halfshafts are a weak point, & can shear at the hub on highly tuned cars. Not a problem for me as I don't use a silly cam or wide, grippy tyres. 140 / 160 & 240 / 260 axles - 5 x 108 pcd & rear discs. Not sure what the difference is between them, if any. IIRC, 7 (& 9 or was that IRS?) series axles are a wider track. Always thought that 200 axles were the hot rodders' favourites?

5x108 is 5x4.25" is';t it, thats the same as Mopar A body so some wheel choice there. But beware, most Mopar A body owners I know moan about lack of available wheels and convert up to 4.5" PCD if they do axle/brake mods anyway.
The 760 is generally the favourite but the 240/260 axle fits under a lot of "our stuff" without having to narrow it (Victor, Cortina, Capri, etc) whereas the 7-series is a better width for a model A model B whatever.

some interesting facts and figures to digest.....
width shouldnt be a problem, its a large saloon;) its actually got IRS, but it doesnt like going low and ive blown a stock shaft with a 2letre, so its gotta go. so I'm going live axle and i think it will be 2-linked with a track locator, or maybe 3-linked. i think ile redrill whatever axle i use to 5x112 to match the front.
motor will start at 200hp but i think it will get bigger quite quickly! the jensen axle would be nice but i can see it going for a lot more than that just cos of the name. ile probly have a bid then go down the scrappy if it gets too rich. this car will be pretty serious, not exactly pro street more kinda hardcore street warrior, but build on a super low budget. ive got £100 in it so far, for the car, replacement panels, and the v8 and manual box is a leftover from another project. i only really need rear axle, tyres, seats and some ally sheet and steel tubing to complete it.

760's V6's (IRS) nor turbo's do not always have an LSD as standard - infact in most cases do not. Neither do the 740's (live) AFAIK. However, that said, there are some cases of people having LSD's in IRS 760s... it seems pot luck! 940 Wentworths do, usually, however - and are plentiful, ie. there are two in M Merrels of Earlswood atm. The LSD is identified by "1041" numbering on the axle itself, you'll have to scrape away some underseal to check I think. Also, a 940 Sport edition will - but you'll struggle to find one of them being broken. There is the option of the 960 rear axle too (codenamed 1065), although that might be more complex being IRS.

I presume he wants a live axle, but I'd be in terested to know, do the diffs swap between the IRS and live axle cars? Might be easier to find a LSD in an IRS car from what you say?

Hmm good point, I have no idea if a IRS diff would swap with a live axle diff - I'd guess no, but who knows! To confuse matters even more, phase 2 (facelift 1994 on) 960s have a different version of IRS. A safe bet would be to go with the live 1041 LSD axle from a 940 imo, and yeah 5x108 as everyone else has said Here's what I mean by identifying one

I'm thinking it might be a Granada? I hope so. World needs more built Granadas nope someone on here does know what it is though as I'm getting it off him, and it being me building it does make it quite obvious what it is! its a full size 4 door saloon, itll be 'interesting' when its done.... I'm collecting it tomorrow. looks like i may have to check the scrappies for volvos then.

240, 260, 760, with the holy grail LSD being found on the 940, and I'm looking for 1040 on the axle. where? in the pic it looks to be on the tube to the side of the diff case?
what year cars are these?
and steveP, you sure these ones near you are the lsd ones? id consider a roadtrip if they are and they're a good price.
