The radio has been full about the latest Labour scam today..... To combat people driving without insurance EVERY car will have to be insured whether it's in use or not...... ......I've not had the chance to look into it yet as i'm at work but it sounds like another level of red tape that will make no differance to the people who it's supposed to target and just cause more headaches and cost for the law abiding majority like us. If that's the case this is going to suck ar*e for people like Ratdat, Joncedric and the rest of us that have multiple "projects" laid up. Please tell me I'm wrong and there is still hope for this Sh**e hole formaly know as Great Britton.

I suspect that many guys in that position will be running with trade policies anyway, when I had more cars than I could keep track of thats what I did.

Insured against what?
Suddenly becoming self aware and running down the postman?
Insurance is a protection against the consequence of risk, isn't it? What is the risk of a car that isn't going anywhere - apart from the obvious of falling on your toe / head / boll0cks when you are attemting to revive it?

Oh god! insuring a laid up vehicle isn't too much IIRC and quite wise, often ok under house insurance, but this sounds like another step too far for more lazy policing!

Bloody ridiculous, this. Someone once said, "Just because I have a penis doesn't mean I am going to rape women", and similarly, just because I own an uninsured car doesn't mean I'm going to use it. FFS, it's parked in the back of a 40' container behind loads of tat and an insured Escort, about three miles from anyone.
Another way to keep the economy running I guess....

Its like all untaxed cars need to be SORN. Because the system to spot if people are tax dodging reuires continual taxing, and SORN applies as a tax. Must be a similar "system need" for somethign to automatically fine road users for lapsing insurance or something.

Isn't this old news? If a car isn't insured, then it has to be declared SORN

Who thinks up this curse word? Time to kick these muppets out! So you say but I wonder if anyone else can do a better job... The LibDems are anti-car, currently backing a private membbers bill which will effectively outlaw motorcycle racing in the UK, and have no proven track record in government. The conservatives f**ked the country up royally last time they were in and I'm not convinced they haven't shed all their bad old ways yet. lus SORN, road pricing and continual insurance were all tory ideas back in the mid 90s anyway.... I'm not a great fan of Blair's style but this country has had about the 10 best years economically and in terms of stability of services and a whole range of things. I'd want to know what the alternatives are before risking going back to the days of 3.5 million unemployed, 15% interest rates, national strikes, army on the streets, rioting, etc.

There have been mumblings about this for some time. Yet another ludicrous scheme by this increasingly Stalinist government. I bet the insurance companies are rubbing their hands with glee.

Stalin wouldn't have introduced this. he'd have banned people from owning cars. Then he's have shot them and stolen their farms...

Currently, If you have a car and you let the insurance run out but the tax does not, do you get a fine? If so why and who sends it?
I remember PC having this in their news pages a while ago but i've never heard of anyone falling foul of it.

Exactly what kind of insurance do you have to have for a SORN'd car?! Surely plenty of garaged projects are covered under household policies? Like Pog said, what kind of policy would cover the "risks" of a car sat on a driveway!?
I've got an idea: Seeing as there's lots of street crime around, I propose a 9pm military curfew. Anyone seen out after this time will be arrested and taken to a Gulag. Should cut crime I reckon.

Nice idea, but a better one would be anyone seen outside (by a CCTV camera that scans the barcode on our shaved heads) after 9pm automatically gets a fine through the door. Of course, only law abiding citizens would have the barcodes.

I think even if there was only 1 untaxed/uninsured motorist rumbled every year you would get this guff about tightening up laws to crack down on them. You would think with the new database and camera technologies available monitoring every one all the time, that driving without tax or insurance would be so difficult as to be not worth the bother. I certainly would not fancy it as I am certain you would get busted within a day or two if you went on any A-roads.
Yet you hear over and over about how these people are a menace who must be stopped as they are 'costing the country and well-behaved motorists millions' Well what I wanna know is WHY? Now that everyone's tax MOT and insurance is on a massive govt database, and the coppers are scanning everyones reg plates and tracking their movements 24-7, and seizing/crushing cars they find are uninsured etc how come these 'menaces' are still out there? Is this technology not working or something? Either it is working and numbers of shonky motorists are right down, or it is not working and we should be questioning why we are being monitored for no benefit.
I suspect these kinds of drivers are simply not out there TBH. Lets see some statistics for numbers of un taxed/uninsured cars on the road every year for the last 15 years or so. I'd bet £100 that they are a tiny tiny fraction of what they used to be.
NB I'd also like to see some stats for folk driving cars which are 'insured', but not for them. Like some barry tw@t taking his mates Corsa for a spin. You never hear anyone even acknowledge that this kind of circumstance exists. I bet 50% of these 'uninsured drivers' fall into this category and would thus be totally unaffected by reg plate scanners, compulsory insurance etc etc.

Its a load of balls but I reckon it`ll be another storm in a teacup, how can you get stopped in a car you`ve got laid up? Alright they can come round and check but is there any legal obligation for a SORNd car on private land to display number plates?
Good point from xbo11ox, hardly anyone does the no insurance number compared to the amount that used to, I also find it hard to believe its the "menace" it was in 2002/3 when every other car sold round my way had 1 days MOT but 5 months tax.

I reckon its simply that someone in goverment has two numbers in fromt of them. There are 40million cars in the UK, and maybe theres 30 million insurance policies. GOOD GOD! 10 million cars (or 1 in 4 if you prefer) are UNINSURED!!!!!!
By the time they work out that those uninsured cars are trade stock, untaxed, projects, covered on classic or fleet policies, etc. some other junior minister has picked up that job in a minor reshuffle and "good lord, 1 in 4 cars are uninsured!!!!"
I heard a stat on the TV that tghey reckon 1 in 5 cars are uninsured! Thats like 800,000. I can't believe that.... it just doesn;t stand to logic or reason that these 1 in 5 cars are in use or on the raod.
The way the news media goes on about it you'd think we were swamped with Kosovans bent on the destruction of the British Empire itself and our beloved queen with their untaxed and uninsuired cars, crack dens and underage prostitutes. 1 in 3 British people is now a Kosovan drug dealing prostitute with no insurance!!!!!
I believe a lot of the "Uninsured" drivers come from the various barrys who have their mum insyure their Combat Corsa in their name as its 100000% cheaper to do that, those who don't declare their modifications, don't declare that they had a DUI conviction 2 years ago, etc. etc. or are just driving someone elses car thinking "I can do this because I have fully comp cover on mine so its legal" etc etc

I bet 50% of these 'uninsured drivers' fall into this category and would thus be totally unaffected by reg plate scanners, compulsory insurance etc etc. Thing is all these stupid schemes only get those of us daft enough to have sent them all our details, cause nearly all of them rely on a camera or computer. I see plenty of untaxed cars about in London, and it's hardly surprising. If you buy a car from some bloke in a pub for a couple of hundred quid and give him a false name and address your going to get a pretty good run out of it, especially if it's got some tax on it. Save yourself at least a grand a year insurance and tax, park where you want, congestion charge exemption etc etc. If you come back to find your car's clamped just walk away and count up all the money you've saved Getting stopped by the police just doesn't seem to happen much now round here (although they did a 'trial' in Camden recently and nabbed thousands of people for motoring and non-motoring offences) It's a fair risk to most people to save a fortune. And some people don't exactly fear the law - I was once in a crash with a bloke who was in what turned out to be a stolen car and he was trying to get me to give him my insurance details (?) or cash to payfor 'his' car after he had caused the accident and destroyed someone else's Beemer in the process Imagine you combatted all crime the way this government want to stop untaxed/uninsured drivers: 'First we'd like all the bank robbers to fill in form V78B with their name and current address, and then we'll just post them a court summons when bank robberies occur. It's absolutely foolproof!' ;D
