Hi everyone kinda new to this, been following threads on here for years but never got round to putting anything of my own on. I'm currently restoring my w124 230e. This is my first project so any hints or tips would be appreciated! I bought the car from my brother for scrap value with no sunroof mechanism and a leaky roof after 6 years stood with a puddle in the footwells. I quickly sorted out all the little niggles out to put it on the road but rushed everything as I was eager to drive it(all it needed were discs and pads all round for the MOT ) After taking my grinder to the springs it looked like this
Plans: om606 conversion air ride suspension new paint already done: wheels full leather

After driving the car for just over a year(and falling in love) I decided it was time to take it off the road and do everything properly, the sills were starting to rot as were the wings and the paintwork was never in good condition. I also wanted to do something with the suspension so it drove a little better as the roads in sheffield have seen better days it was causing me more problems than anything! So after getting hold of this for £150 as a daily I decided it was time to start

Having not done anything like this before I have been finding it difficult to decide what order to do things in and took an "as long as it gets done" approach so the next job I had a go at was the sunroof, after driving it about for a year with no mechanism and it banging and rattling about this was one of the main things I wanted to sort. After reading up about how to replace the whole mechanism and roof lining (because I didn't have one) I decided that it was going to be too much like hard work to try and source and fit a new mechanism so decided to weld the sunroof up to be a bit different. I like to have a go at anything I can get my hands on so I bought a welder and threw myself into the deep end with no welding experience. With a couple of "how to weld" YouTube videos fresh in my mind I decided the easiest way to do it would be to build the original roof panel up so that it was bigger than the opening. After a few days of building the welds up so the panel wouldn't warp I finally got it too big for the hole

This is how the car stands at the minute, with the dark nights and rubbish weather I'm struggling to get anything done. I have recently got a hold of a cheap w124 300TD with an OM606 that runs beautifully! I will get some pictures of that up ASAP but the will be the donor for the dirty diesel transplant. With the donor being a facelift better equipped model I have A/C to swap over and a later dash with the built in wood. So new plans are: Diesel transplant Full loom swap Heater matrix and A/C retro fitted Facelift dash possibly trimmed to suit my current cream leather interior I want to fit the rear pillar lights from the estate into the saloon And a full front end swap to the facelift front end including the diesel wing I am on with getting a unit sorted so that I can make a start on the engine conversion, hopefully I will have one sorted before Xmas so I can make some proper progress while work is on shutdown. Very nice and excellent timing! I am now the proud owner of a 300D estate (S124?). Its currently in Spain, but that's a story for when I start a thread in the new year...
How many coils did you end up removing? It sits well! I was thinking about 2 off the front and 1 out back...

I'm gutted I have to scrap the donor one tbh but it's too far gone I might have to invest in one after this is finished. I took 2 and a half off front and back if I remember right, I'm a sucker for the lower the better but with the weight of this car and how bad the roads are it wasn't a pleasant ride!

Cheers for that, I have to say it sits well. TBH if you don't fit shorter dampers to match then you have to expect some crashing around!

sorted a unit out and should be moving in this weekend so some proper progress can begin.
Just gauging interest on the 230e engine once it's out, I was just going to scrap it but if someone can make better use of it I would be happy to sell.
Would be good in a 190e I was thinking?? Runs fine and I can video it running and driving before I remove it.
Throw a PM my way if your interested
Cheers Rich

I like these pre facelift W124s and the 300D engine sounds a good swap. Is the registration 3AYG a family one, or did it come with the car? It must be worth quite a bit of money with such a low number.

It's been in the family since 1968, it doesn't relate to our family name but as you can imagine everyone local knows it's ours.
