A perfect example just 5 minutes ago...Stuck behind a dodderer in a Fiesta doing 25mph if that, Golf TDI comes haring up behind me at a disconcerting speed, only just slowed down, the VW badge was virtually taking up my rear view mirror etc. 20 years ago, no Golf TDis, what would that woman have been driving? A Golf Diesel, with a 5mph top speed, a Golf petrol? Mk3 Escort? Either way I bet it wouldnt have been anything capable of accelerating up steep hills with anything the frightening speed that these things can. Cars, and vans, are too fast for the plebs that drive them, they don't appreciate the performance they just do 100mph everywhere because the car/van will do it really easiliy. Absolutely, this infuriates me, retro car or not. If someone comes up on my rear bumper I slow down further to give me a longer stopping distance. This process winds them up to the point that they will overtake. Doesn't bother me, if someone is driving like an idiot I would rather have them as far away from me as possible. Unfortunately, these people are usually the same cretins who will do 40 in a tight residential road, but then continue to do 40 when it goes into a wide open 60 limit.

Old cars can be safe, but in random ways. Beetles were meant to be quite safe for their time, and the chassis is pretty strong in a front- or rear-on collision due to the thick backbone. However smack one from the side, and even new with no rot in the channels they fold like paper.

On the flip side, had I been driving something with DSC I am not so sure I would have left the road in quite such spectacular fashion. Is that in a BMW Mini? If so, the one I had on my Bini was curse word Mine was the DCS+C (or something like that), the uprated version. It would brake for you round corners and send it all over the shop if you tryed to correct it. I turned it off and got a bollocking off BMW because it void the insurance if its off and you crash. I have DSC in both the Bini and the 325i. The 325's version is stunning, utterly impossible to detect in operation, just a simple yellow light that flashes on the dashboard to say that it is saving your ass. It is unintrusive and massively confidence inspiring. I love it and have only turned it off a couple of times, I prefer the feel of the car with it turned on. The Bini version is utterly terrible, I flick it off every single time I get into the car. The Traction Control portion is over aggressive, the Stability control portion has its limits set way too low, I am way faster around the track with DSC turned off, but I'll admit to leaving it ON in the rain on the road.

:)Most modern cars I've driven are dangerous simply because I feel like falling asleep after a few miles!

Yes they are tough motors, but beig hit by nearly 2 tonnes of swedish steel might make them appear to be made out of tinfoil. they're much stronger up front than at the rear though.

thats what happend to the one I hit in my granny, not quite that bad though as he was moving so I only had about a 30mph impact, they deffo fold up though, I clumped a VW scirocco in one I was using as a cab and it broke really badly.
Volvos normally fold up loads as well as the crumple zones are pretty good, its why they are no good as banger racers, they have this reputation as indestructable tanks, but in reallity they are VERY easy to write off, the passenger cell is very strong though.

My car has crumple zones too, although I think they are a lot "firmer" than modern crumple zones. When I hit a new Corsa in the rear with it, the Corsa folded but the Benz just had a few dents.
