Whilst out tooling around with camera in tow this afternoon, I figured I'd have a drive past 'The Austin'. Somehow, 'The Nanjing' just doesn't have the same ring to it. This was where one of the later (1970's) buildings once stood. This green building on the right used to stretch for what seemed like miles. To the right of where I was standing, it's just rubble. It was at that point that I realised that there were probably half a dozen more people stood taking pictures of the devastation. I abandoned my Sunday Spot-a-Thon and chatted to a few of them....then came home feeling thoroughly pi55ed off.

my then-mate Andy's Rover 2000 outside Canley when that was torn down. Sadly the car is no more now either.

Was there not long back. So terrifyingly different as you approach the site now. No tunnel, no buildings at all on most of the A38 stretch towards Northfield! Last time I felt genuinely disorientated by it!
There's a Pride of Longbridge run on 12th April. If anyone wants the details, let me know and I'll post them up. Should be good Rover content - lets make it Retro too!

Its a real shame to see all that history dissapearing. I suppose the same is happening the Rootes/ Peugeot plant in Ryton near Coventry now.

'Tis a shame to see it being torn down. Only been there once for the centenary event 18 months ago in the park acrosss the road. I think both our BMC cars were built at Cowley as they're Morris badged but I'm not 100% sure. At least come of that one is still there churning out MINIs (it is sin't it?!)

I couldn't get a pic of where the main building was- the traffic was a nightmare and the lights went green before I got to them so couldn't even risk a drive-by! Only the old ticket office remains, the rest is just rubble. I was having a great afternoon until I got there, the whole experience really took the wind out of my sails.... I'm going up to the Pride Of Longbridge Run, will take some more snaps then.

Where do you lay blame though? Is it cheap imported cars? Is it the people that buy cheap imported cars? Is it those pesky foreign workers that don't get paid as much as we do?
I'm cracking on for 30 soon and I struggle to remember a time when "Made in England" wasn't a joke. What sticks in my mind more is tales of BL strikes, poor QC checks, rusty new cars on forecourts..... sadly if nobody wants to 'buy british' then nobody will make british cars. I actually think the last of the Rovers / MGs like the 75 Tourers, the ZT-T and even the ZS's were pretty good for a hasty attempt at mutton dressed as lamb, they were cheap enough and went well enough. Too little too late though.
I do love the 28dayslater site, the Longbridge stuff is excellent and a real eye-opener as to how quickly the whole place was shut down. Cars halfway into paint booths, photoshoot cars left out in the open, stacks of assembled bodies just lined up waiting....

Where do you lay blame though? Consumer capitalism. Do you really want me up on my soap box about the unsutainability of the economic and political model chosen by the west? Thats what its about. Greed. Greed and the fact that since 1990 the proportion of the wealth of this country owned by the richest 1% has grown... The rich are getting richer and so they don't care - their wealth is transportable and multi-nationally based anyway.

the answer is controlled, sustainable economies. I think theres a lot of mileage in protectionism. There is bob all in the "free market". Even Adam Smith realised (and espoused) that the freedom of the market must be constrained by society for the general good.
The problem is people have been educated (by mass media, marketting, etc.) to expect everything and to expect it NOW. Thing is quality products, made by people on proper wages will cost money! So what? People will just have to buy less stuff and maybe even looka after their stuff and maybe even REPAIR these things rather than chucking them in the bin after 9 months and buying the next piece of chepa made in Korea plastic tat. But repair shops keep people in skilled work... ...all good for a sustainable macroeconomy.
Globalisation = bad.
Free market = bad
greedy ignorant credit hungry consumers = bad.
etc
