That's true actually!!
I think I meant not common when new as the saloon was the bigger seller. Then they all rusted away leaving only the cab and coupe. So it is the otherway round now. Not too keen on the saloon tho'. Like the coupe but the cab is a bit of a cliche now!

Now that is rare, it was designed for Rootes by Zagato, who planned to make it as a kind of upmarket coupe model of the Imp, in the same way as the later Stiletto that made it to production, but Chrysler (they had a 50% share in Rootes even at that time before they owned it totally) made them stop the project. The same goes for the Asp, which was originally designed to be a sportscar version of the Imp, similar to the Clan Crusader only actually made at Linwood and sold at Rootes dealers, but again it got canned.

Before the Zimp, Zagato was working on a Mini based coupe which never made it passed the prototype stage called the BMC Mini Cat.

Chrysler didnt really like the Imp. So they set about killing it off. The Nymph was going to be the Rootes Mini Moke but thanks to Chrysler it ended up as a kit car.

Well apart from the obvious: The half-width painted grille!
I think I'm right in saying that these were proper poverty-spec jobs with very basic trim (e.g. no heater) and (I think) even less power than the more common 105's and 123's variants.

Yeah your right Nick, you'll also notice that theres hardly any chrome on the body (painted light surrounds etc). Standards run the 997cc engine while most 105e's run the 1200cc engine, having said that my Uncles also ran the 1200 for a time while he rebuilt the 997cc, pretty sure its back to standard spec (no pun intended) now though.

As to why it's rare, it's the halfway point between a Frogeye, and a conventional Spridget (Sprite / Midget) as it has the later front and rear, but the Frogeye centre section (including sidescreens, interior etc), wheels, mechanicals and rear suspension (1/4 elliptic with radius arms rather than 1/2 elliptic springs). Not many have survived, as they were much more basic than the later versions, but without the distinctive styling of the Frogeye, both of which are far more commonplace now. Note the uninterrupted wing line, due to not having wind-up windows
