Hey all, Another day, another post. that's how it works, right? Because of the unique installation of the engine into the vehicle, and the packaging constraints we developed for ourselves by how low down we put it, we had to modify the sump to get around these issues, specifically the subframe and steering rack. The sump is from an Opel Rekord, and is purportedly quite rare. This started with chopping it up.... We also modified the pick up pipe, as the original was from an Astra GSi, where the engine is transversely mounted. handy view in through the front. we also stiffened the pipe, to stop it wangling about I suppose. a rather tatty side profile. you can see where we relieved it at the front(on the left of the pic) against the subframe, and where we relieved it towards the back against the steering rack. You can also see that we moved the location of the sump plug. here it is in the installed condition. i think it was close to 5mm clearance to both the subframe and steering rack. let me know what you think Thanks, Pete

If you're doing track days with it ,it might be a good idea to baffle the sump to keep the oil around the pick up. A plate above the pickup would probably suffice with a baffle on the left and right sides to counteract turns especially if using soft compound slicks. Check the trigger wheel if using it, they can crack and burst if using high revs. Keep the updates coming.

Yes, the sump will have a horizontal baffle added with a hole for pick up pipe and dipstick. And probably some holes/grilles to help the oil drain back down. It will be going back to Alan, the chap who has done all of the fabrication work so far. Yes, i wont be using the internal trigger wheel and have bought an external one (at great expense....) from SBD. Cheers! Pete

Catching up on 2 months worth of RR updates looking good dude Thankyou! 2 months of updates but the images actually span around 2 and a half years. I just started skimming through your TDXJ40 thread......what an inspired creation. looks like a bit of a marathon?

Haha thanks man! Glad you're enjoying the XJ40 yes it has been a bit of a marathon! Still is TBH partially because I've got a bit fed up of driving around half-broken cars so I've decide to sort everything on the Jag to give myself a bit of headroom for fixing the rest of the broken fleet! Fair chunk of scope creep to blame as well

the scope creep is real, when i originally bought the previous incarnation of KLJ, it was only going to be a matter of sorting out the noisy diff and the synchro in the gearbox.....

Good Evening All, I thought i'd write you all a post over a beer (Doom Bar). By this point we had a shell which had all of its resident rusticles removed and a large proportion of the motorsport/track day car fabrication complete. Next up is paint prep..... it was a case of removing engine, gearbox and roll cage to send it off for some colourThe daily, as it was then, in the background. Brilliant car, if not retro so my apologies for that! Thanks for reading, as always. Pete

Looks very nice, is it Triton Green? it is Kawasaki green, Triton was an option when i was making the decision. I wanted it to be the same tone (but green) as the vermilion sprint you can see in the bottom right hand corner of the 'car show' shot. whatever colour it was going to be it needed to stand up to that, and not look washed out when its sat next to it.

Hello All, Updates are coming quick and fast now Following the progress with the paintwork the next step was to start getting it as a rolling shell. We started this by removing the subframe and stripping the bits of it. Something told me that it had never been apart so it took alot of effort. This subframe has been modified to take the C20XE engine mounts. It's also had a fair amount of strengthening as the welding left alot to be desired! This can be seen on the main fore/aft sections. To my pleasure the mounting areas were in great condition so i didn't expect it to need anything else before being powder coated. Rear axle.... When my dad purchased his racecar(KPD105W) I sourced a Salisbury LSD from the same chap based in the west country. Being us, we took it apart! Partly as a learning exercise but also as an exercise to see how it's set up. This is a spreader that we made many years ago to set up a noisy open diff. So I have read that the original LSD cars were set up with a "public friendly" diff setting. On mine this was approximately 35Nm. This meant having both drive plates together on either side, with both friction plates next to each other also. We set it up so the order was drive plate-friction plate-drive plate-friction plate. Interestingly this still gave us a value of ~35Nm. The chap i acquired it from informed me it had "ST driveshafts" installed. I was intrigued to find out more..... I didn't realize they would be this big! This is shown next to a standard shaft.... Dolomites have a problem whereby under high torque the 'shafts bend in the middle of the span between hub and diff, meaning gearbox oil can leak out from the rear wheel bearings onto the rear brakes. Hopefully these stop this happening. Thanks for reading, I am hoping there will be more progress soon after we've had suspension components powder coated etc. Until next time.... Pete

They are indeed, the power won't be massive (at least to begin with) but seeing how chonky they are definitely gives peace of mind Cheers, Pete

Hello All! We now jump forward by around 2 years in 'real time', during which time various different things happened including a redundancy, a new house, 4 months of unemployment and a new job! New job was as Powertrain project engineer for Aston Martin QAO..... The new job was allowing me progress the car in earnest. I started to fit various bits of trim.... we also started trying our hand at restoration of the interior wood.....more on this to follow. We are also working towards getting it into a rolling shell. It is currently sat on a trolley of sorts and is difficult to move. The axle was rebuilt by 2Spec Transmissions, based near Kenilworth. He managed to source me a NOS CW&P, as the one removed from the axle was pitted on two opposite faces. We think this is where the car/axle has been sat in the same place for an extended period of time with little to no oil. Some components will need powdercoating. I am looking at going down slightly away from the norm. I have managed to find a company who seem to do a very hard paint-like coating. I am hoping that is of a similar thickness to powder coating. watch this space. Alan(remember him?) is started working his magic with the subframe, adding some anti roll bar mounts and developing some drop links. I'm hoping to get this back soon. That's it for now, I am hoping to update this more regularly now we have forward progress. As always, I look forward to your comments! Pete

Wow, love that colour!
Interested to see how you get on with this coating, need to get all the arms and frame done on the Toledo and not keen on powder coat die to tendancy to chip in these areas.
