Hi there! Just thought i would introduce myself. I'm Pete, 24 from nearish Chester. Last October i bought this. Triumph Dolomite Sprint. Superficially it looked ok. However we uncovered the inevitable rust... majorly bodged. it was missing an inner front panel, for instance, to create room for an oversize radiator. and numerous patches everywhere! the story continued....

After much umming and erring, i decided a reshell was the best option. this wasn't without its problems. it then started getting pretty involved.. ^^^ this picture was similiar on both sides. new diaphragm panels and outer sills were the result! if you want the full story and more pictures, they're available on the Triumph Dolomite Forum!

Now this looks like a great project! One question I have is are you reshelling the Sprint into the white car, or is the white car going to be a fresh build with an engine swap? .

Thanks It was originally going to be a straight re shell into the white shell with the sprint engine. But I have since decided that trying to get reasonable amounts of power reliably out of a sprint engine is akin to getting blood out of a stone. Hence the change to Vauxhall power!

Hello All..... I hope you are all well. Holy cow what a thread revival....! So.....it seems things have progressed slightly since the last time I updated this. Hopefully you will all like what has happened in the time we haven't spoken, I would welcome any of your thoughts and criticism! I will aim to make the updates a bit more detailed than what is above, in the effort to give you a better idea of what is going on. the next thing on the list was gearbox installation.... Ford Type 9 'box. The gearbox position was determined by the fabricated engine mounts. This uses the same Sprint gearbox mount More to follow very soon..... Pete

Hello again, Since the start of the project I have aimed to minimise the failings/weak points of the original Triumph architecture. One of these is the brake servo. I was concerned that under heavy braking, the bakelite component inside could fracture. As such, we worked to remove it. We started with this.... Turned it into this.... and then this...this is the aperture through which the rear of the servo passes through. and then replaced it with the box. can you tell what it is yet?! we modified the brake pedal.... this was for a bias bar.... this is the view from the back....a bias pedal box! and the front! Thanks, Pete

Looking good so far I'd be tempted to weld the pedal box from the inside if possible "less chance of fatigue around the spot welds" The cavaliers used to suffer similar with the steering rack Apart from that keep up the good work
My uncle is a bit of a sprint fan he had one in his youth and he bought another to do track days etc like yourself He sold that some years ago but he bought another recently not sure what his plans are with it

The only thing about the Dolomite Sprint that is worth preserving is the engine.

Hello Stew,
Thanks for the comments.
I am 95% sure we welded the inside of the pedal box to tie it all together. Id be very surprised if we didn't.
These pictures were actually taken nearly 5.5 years ago....it's fair to say I have been neglecting this thread. No longer though.
Besides, as you will see <<<< the car is now painted so it's probably a bit late now.
What has he bought?
Cheers,
Pete

Hello again, since i am A) rather long in the leg. and B) going to be sitting in a bucket seat which is a lot closer to the floor than an original seat, i needed to be sat further back. As such we extended the available seat rail area backwards, with some feet down to the rear footwell. In relation to this, we started thinking about seat belts. I'll be running harnesses, as such there isnt anywhere to mount them. One option would be to run it to the rear hard points, however this would put the belts at an angle to the seatback. In the event of a frontal impact, this has the potential to break the seat. As such, we needed some mountings to enable the belts to be more horizontal. and then copied and pasted Cheers, Pete

I like the harness mounts. I cringe every time I see belts heading down at 45* from the seat back.

Curious about Ben's dislike for the dolly sprint too. I think they are fantastic looking cars. Hannah owned a 175 bhp, caged and properly lowered one for a year or so when in the UK and we discovered that they drive and handle really well too.
Please keep the updates coming.

Hello All..... Happy 2022! Well, i had said I was going to try and keep up to date with this but ended up completely failing. The world has changed somewhat since the last time we spoke, including a worldwide pandemic, change of job and change of house! Hopefully you're all still out there? Here's to another attempt.... I will continue updating you all on the various developments with the fabrication, so you are all up to date, before bringing us fully up to date with the most recent happenings. Inspired by the Subaru WRX rally cars, we thought it might be cool to engineer some sill stands into the jacking points. Since the sills needed redoing anyway, why not?! Step 1: Invert vehicle Create piece of box section with suitably sized tube welded in place and position underneath A and C pillars, near to where original jacking points are. weld in sill bottom plate? glue together.... complete! copy and paste onto the other side the plan is to get a pair of reasonably sized axle stands and have a bar welded to the top. Let me know if you have any questions, these posts (i promise!) will ramp up over the coming weeks. Thanks! Pete
