I'm pretty new to this site, and was just thinking....do people on here have a age view on what's retro or not?
i mean, do people consider a car before 1990 retro, and most cars past that date modern? last year my family scrapped our g reg gallant that i loved. i drive a 91 mini, and i think it's pretty retro, but fancy something different...i saw someones yellow datsun, and someone on here has an amazing green estate (i don't know what it is) cars like that i really like..but i can imagine if you drive an old car like that, a few people might make rude remarks, becase until recently and finding this site there are loads of cars i dismissed as rubbish, but now i might see a metro van in a field and think how cool it could be.
i know for a fact, my mates wouldn't understand me driving something old, unless it was a beetle, a mini or a camper. do many people on here get rude comments about their cars? and what would people recommend as a good retro car for me to look out for (a maestro van is something i'd like)

The force is strong in this one. I'm not sure how you'd define retro. I suppose something that doesn't fit with the modern car design. Like my Astra thread has illustrated, even cars dating from the early 90's can be considderd retro, I suppose it just has to be outdated

Good one from last discussion like this, RMAD i think; if you don't see em about often day to day any more, or you spot summatstanding out in a car park and go whoa, and get us a 'spotted' piture! the mk2 astra discussion is a good example, 70/30 split on whether it is retro, tis to me!

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

i like the idea of just keeping an old car on the road..other than the minis, i've got a corsa, and the roads of flooded with them, i'd like something you don't see everyday, but the wimp inside me, doesn't want a car people will slate when they see it.
some people on here drive skodas, and whilst i think they look cool. i'm not sure i'd be able to get on with people making silly jokes all the time.

If you spend your life worrying about what other people think of you then you will never find your own true style or be at ease with yourself.
If people don't like my car they can go dash themselves. With bells on. Big, nobbly uncomfortable bells on as well. What, I'm supposed to be inmpressed by a mid range family "sporting" hatch on 5 year payment plan at 17% APR. cocknobbertw@z

yeah true..i didn't think of it like that, driving a retro car is also a statement. and that's so true about when you beat a car off lights or on the bends.

...........but the wimp inside me, doesn't want a car people will slate when they see it. Don't be a wimp, there is nothing better than your mates laughing at you for buying a Volvo . Then making them eat humble pie as you hit 14 psi in 3 gear and leave them for dead on the local bypass ;D

Although people never really give me any giff about my cars, not people I know anyway, people I work with have been known to make odd comments and once I worked at a law firm and I think they were going to get my car towed from the work car park because they thought it was an abandonned scrapper... But on the whole people accept that I have what I have and the ladies used to love it. Soon as you get married that one changes though...
If they don't get it, you can't explain it.
Occasionally people shout stuff in the street but f**k 'em.

Are you asking for a personal opinion. or a defining answer? Like the hot rod pre '49, street machine / custom post '49 that makes people so angry in the states?
If you want an opinion, here's mine, at risk of offending (no offence meant, honest!):
I consider anything before about 1980 "retro", and anything after, not. There are a couple of reasons for this.
Firstly, this was about the point in time that cars started to go "plastic". Chrome bumpers started to disappear, trims that were previously stainless were replaced by blacked out items or rubbers with no adornment (eg windscreen trims). Performance had already started to trail off as manufacturers were forced to comply with emissions restrictions and hadn't yet come to terms with engine management that would return performance to their ranges in the latter part of the 80s, a full decade later. The general shape of cars was boxy, angular and plain in the 80s, then started to look quite similar between manufacturers as they all looked toward aerodynamic designs in the 90s.
My second reason is much more selfish. I was born in 1972, and became "aware" of cars in 1980 when my mother bought a new Toyota Corona to replace the trusty old '64 "EH" wagon that had been written off. Basically if I can remember it as a new car, I find it hard to consider it retro.
Remember, opinions are like.....

^^^ I'd go with something similar but then a lot of others wouldn't.
Nobody here seems to care much what it is or when it was made (within reason).
"Just do what you feel and keep both feet on the wheel"
I'd rather see someone do something cool and unusual with a Mk1 Mondeo than yet another generic Mk2 Golf done...

I think trying to define "retro" is one massive can of worms that can only end in disagreement, so I'll not comment on that. Suffice to say that if it's retro to you, that should be enough. As for people making comments / jokes about your car... screw 'em. You wouldn't let your mates or the general public choose your clothes or your gilfriend, why should they decide what car you drive?! Personally, I like it when people don't get my ride. I've had the "has this just come from the scrapyard?" comment twice. Once by an AA man ;D.

for me it not about how old it is, its about the styling from the factory, an example of that is my mini, built in 1994 but still basically the same as the first minis i havent heard anyone on here say its not retro. if i get a retro twinge when i see a car then its retro i don't check what reg it is before i decide on something

I might start a thread for "things said to you by the AA man" but my favourite was when my silver 1971 Victor was stuck at the side of the M1 after a boil-over the AA guy looked it over, I confessed it had spent the last 16 years off the road in a garage and I'd got it on the road the previous weekend. Now I was off to see a girl in Coventry in it.
He looked me and after a pause he just said "well, I have to admire your optimism".
I have also been asked "You want me to tow it straight to the scrappers?" before.
And the AA man who kept calling my Vauxhall a "Pox-all"
But many of the AA chappies have been quite appreciative of what I have been driving (or rather not) when they have been called out.

I woouldn't get too hung up on the "Is it retro?" question, everybody likes what they like and has their own opinion! No point in trying to establish retro criteria or rules etc. In fact rules are your enemy! ;D
My ride of choice is my 3-door Sierra, and some of my neighbours hate it just because it's old ("bringing down the tone", apparently - on a council estate?!) and make unkind comments about the car. Like AK says, curse word 'em! Don't play by the consumerist "keep up with the joneses" rules. These people need to put others down to feel better about their boring lives and their huge finance bills.
I'm an accountant so I have loads of colleagues with brand new Lexuses (Lexi?), BMWs, Astras etc etc and none of them have a problem with me driving a "funny old car".... In fact they're more likely to take the mickey out of my Mondeo!
In summary, get a car which appeals to you and sod what anyone thinks!

From here : www.retro-rides.com/articles/FAQ.htmlWhat is Retro Rides all about? Now there is a question! The forum started as a place to discuss different marques of classic and modified classic cars. Defining what cars we actually discuss is a little tricky, there some general threads that ties them all together. The cars are generally a peoples car of some sort, rather than out of reach sports cars, or they are an under appreciated classic. The cars tend to be modified either aesthetically, mechanically or both. They tend to be over 20 years old. More often than not they would be what most people consider budget classics. However, they may not conform to any of these things, this is what makes what we do so interesting. So if you've got a 1973 Vauxhall Viva dropped over BBS alloys, or a 1906 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost, we'll be as interested to hear about your experiences and what its like to own your car, because above everything else Retro Rides is about a love of cars. I wrote that 3 years ago,.. nothings really changed.

To me, late Retro is based on a lot of things, theres the desirable ones like the early Hot Hatches, your GTi's etc. Theres the things that 5-10 years ago, you wouldn't of given a second glance because you saw them everywhere, things like Mk2 Cavaliers, Sierra's, Metro's, Maestro's etc. Then you have the things that not alot of people want, things like Lada's, Skoda's and again, Maestro's etc. Then of course, theres the rare stuff, stuff thats been imported or was never particually big sellers. But what it boils down to is what you have a passion for. If you see potential in an old Bedford Van that no one has touched for years then to you it is Retro. Its all a matter of opinions.

The bit about seeing a car and thinking "haven't seen one of those in ages" is a key thing for me. I love the fact that it often seems that there is more of an appreciation on here for a povo spec Renault 12 than a Pug 205 GTi say. Lots of not-new stuff has Retro appeal but the level does vary.
