I think the what is retro question has been covered very well already. I'll also back up the comments about not worrying about what other people think. You should drive what you enjoy driving! You might get some funny looks and the odd comment and plenty of people probably won't understand. Don't let that bother you! If mates continually take the curse word they ain't proper mates! Don't be a sheep!

some people on here drive skodas, and whilst I think they look cool. i'm not sure i'd be able to get on with people making silly jokes all the time. the jokes stop after a while. you phase them out, the people give up, or you just ignore them. there isnt that many any more, and to be honest, when you see one done up nicely as most are, the jokes really on the curse word-taker. i actually really like telling people i drive an old skoda (or two). it makes them go right off me it sorts the people who like your personality from those who like you because youre a socially acceptable acquaintance lol If you spend your life worrying about what other people think of you then you will never find your own true style or be at ease with yourself. If people don't like my car they can go dash themselves. With bells on. Big, nobbly uncomfortable bells on as well. What, I'm supposed to be inmpressed by a mid range family "sporting" hatch on 5 year payment plan at 17% APR. cocknobbertw@z Personally, I like it when people don't get my ride. I've had the "has this just come from the scrapyard?" comment twice. Once by an AA man ;D. what they said. funnily, my current car DID come straight out of a scrappies! remember, YOU are the boss of YOUR life. if YOU want to stand out, do something different, deviate from the norm, YOU decide. i think most of have been down the unsatisfying finance deal/modern car route. do what you feel, man. remember, you'll be the one with the unusual car, the alternative lifestyle, the courage to stand up... and although chicks may like a new successful-ite car, the ones worth entertaining will appreciate your individualism and self-confidence. the car will be more fun, you'll be happier, and in the long run you'll save yourself a packet if you play the game right.

The chicks who dig "sucessmobiles" like silver BMW compacts are the sort that expect a trip to Ikea every weekend and will flush your credit rating down the toilet spanking joint credit cards on QVC tat "Diamonique" jewelery and the like. Drive a bolloxed old Vauxhall. It will protect you from these harpies.

For me its simply something "old" but not necessarily that old that makes you go "Ooooooh not seen one of them for ages, how cool is that"

Oh.... and to add to all the above which I agree with. I drive a new car for work, and that is "nice" but I had more fun in my 59 and 63 beetles, as well as my 67 Angle-Box that I had bought with the motor in the boot. It was much more fun bombing along the motorway some years ago with the Anglia weaving all over 2 lanes at 70mph downhill and popping out of 4th gear at times, finding a replacement gearbox after a 6 month search is sooooo rewarding. So I agree, make your own statememnts, and save a packet in the long run, so that you can build a humungous garage. This is what I used to have, started out as a single garage, ended up big enough to hold 7 cars.

Part of it for me is taking something utterly pedestrian and giving that extra something that makes you go OoooOOooFFfFFFFFF! Doesnt matter how old it is really, its the attitude towards it, and some out of the box thinking.

in the last few years, my family have scrapped a gallant, a 2 reg escort estate, and giving one of those mercs with the stacked headlights away....if i knew of this site then, it'd be a different story.

there is a nice escort estate i was looking at on ebay...thanks to the ebay thread. the one we had was nuts..it had a giant rust hole in it, and the sun roof was held in with red tape to stop it falling out.

can't say what makes a retro, but i know what breaks a retro for me... the ECU
something about it which means I have a hard time calling a car with ECU retro..... the closest my hunter comes to management is a self canceling indicator and thats just about the level of complexity i can handle :-)
I am tilted to the "WD40 and duct tape" school of thought, and computers don't go well with either....

What I don;t get is people who want to fit ECU motors into non-ECU cars... Technofear!

i've never heard of people doing that..but i know what you mean. an old friend of mine told me he'd never ever drive a car with a manual choke...because they're all fitted to curse word unreliable cars. words failed me that day.

Never seen a Zetec in a MK1 Esocrt or a K series oin a Morris Minor? Or a Honda Vtec in a Mini? Lots of modern engines in old cars going on. I just draw the line after SOHC really

can't say what makes a retro, but I know what breaks a retro for me... the ECU In the early 1970's, the Mercedes W116 had an ECU I know what you mean though, the whole "No user serviceable parts inside" thing gives me the fear. However I reckon once they're understood, ECU's aren't that scary...
