You remember this right? The VW Beetle with a jet engine or rocket or whatever in the back? Well, I was reading elsewhere about it and it turns out that the California DMV has declined to relicence the car for road use. Turns out you can't use a rocket powered car on the street. Anyone tell Batman? Apparently the only thing they could get himon was emissions!

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

[off topic ish personal rant] They could do with getting them to come over here and kill off the god awful rocket powered wizard roadster that runs at Santa Pod too. I've never seen a crowd more disappointed by a 'run' in my life. And then they have to close the track for ages to clean all the curse word it's spewed out up.... [/end of unprovoked attack]

The car was converted after it was licenced. Not dis-similar to getting road tax. However since its had a lot of publicity in magazines and internet, with the registration plate visible, the local DMV have looked it up on the computer and found the guy and wrote to him telling him it won't be allowed a licence for next year.
Sort of like if someone had a car in a magazine and the DVLA took exception and wrote to him saying they were pulling the V5C back and he had to go through SVA.
No idea about the bike. Perhaps he just didn't get caught yet? Perhaps he lives in another state with less tight laws?

crikey, they are allowed to drive about in some right old rot boxes but a rockets not okay .. It's very scary - I was in Miami this weekend & saw a Toyota (first fwd Corolla?) that had most of it's sill missing yet was still being driven With the full size barges, they at least have a separate chassis.
