OK, I've shamelessly stolen this from the Classic bikes newsgroup I read, but wonder what you think:
Retro status is calculated as follows:
age x how good was it when it was new x special interest multiplier.
'how good was it when it was new' and 'special interest multiplier' scored out of 10 - with a minimum score of 100 needed to qualify.
So.... for example:
A ten year old car would have to be brilliant when new to qualify, at 20 years an average car qualifies at 50 years any old heap would get in.
It's a bit strict, but i works well for classic bikes.
Discuss.

I think that equation is flawed because it allows virtually any old heap to get in after 50 years.
I conclude that based on the following: The retro car world includes many heaps that have got in without having to wait that long.

I reckon to get that formula anywhere near correct for this place you'd need to add 'was it rubbish and unloved when new?' and 'will it look good dumped on steelies?'. Both would qualify instantly. Seriously though, age is almost irrelevant IMO. I've seen some great diddy vans and euro-lookers, and they're practically new. As said, it's the approach we're after methinks.

I know we don't have any kind of pigeon holing, but sometimes I just see something that would appear to be stretching the definition of 'retro' by being way too new and dull.

I think that contributes to the eccentricity of the retro scene. As well as people getting excited over unloved heaps and styling disasters they also get led astray by non-retro stuff. It may not fit in with the retro theme, but it's amusing and does nothing to dilute the retro scene.

Where is the 'line in the sand'? - the E36 was still in production in 2001.....
Would a MkI / II Mondeo also be called 'Retro'...... 'cos if they slip in, then I'm in the wrong place.

That's kind of my point here - the E36 was never 'cool', a standard one, at the moment, is just a cheap, ageing 4 door saloon.
There has to be some kind of a line, or we will end up with bog standard Vectras in there if we're not careful.

Is that a good thing?
Thinking back at some of the cars I've owned - 1992 Primera - retro? - I say definitely not.
How about an 1994 Alfa 155? - I don't think they've made it yet, but they at least have some 'special interest'.
Fiat Marea 20v? - again, special interest, but *far* too new to qualify, but of the same era as the E36.
I'm obviously getting old, 'cos anything introduced in the 90s just seems like a current / new car these days.

In YOUR opinion You don't like E36`s.... thats your issue, no one elses, you have to find your own way of dealing with it....perhaps this thread is it I thought the Drifty one that was posted up a while back looked hard as nails slammed in Satin black and they are at least RWD ;D Or 156`s or Passat TDI`s I suppose Its not what you drive on here thats important its what you do with it

I just like the eccentricity of the whole scene. It's even better when someone starts getting irritated by it.

Yeah, it's an irritation and yes, I hate all BMWs post E30.....
But the point still stands, how can a car that didn't go out of production until 2001 be called 'retro'? - especially when they're so readily found parked on almost every street in the UK.
I accept my 156 and Passat aren't retro, which is why I'd never post them as a 'Readers Ride' - my 75, however, is definitely a retro, given it's roots in the Alfetta.
You can talk about 'attitude' all you like, but then you'd also have to say a bog standard E36 couldn't qualify in any way at all.
As I've said - it's a bit of a slippery slope when you start calling bog standard family saloons from the 90s 'retro', 'cos it leaves the group open to all sorts of mundane, but common, bangers being posted.

Retro - Involving, relating to, or reminiscent of things past; retrospective. But,just because it's old it doesn't make it cool......now where have i read that before

Twinspark, I'm sure you're a nice bloke, but nearly every time I see something you've posted you're complaining about it!
Last time I looked it was Range Rovers, the Land Rover scene in general, classic Mini owners and classic VW owners!
What makes you smile?

I've encouraged healthy debate..... and mamaged to wind you up 'cos I had a dig a Landie owners for causing some of the issues we now face from VOSA.....
I'm not complaining as such, just encouraging discussion. It has opened a can of worms 'cos if we allow the E36 to be classed as a 'retro ride', then we have to allow 90s Mondeos, Astras, Vetras and even MkVII Escorts in as 'retro'......
